From: Little Hawk

Clinton said he figures there are only 10 to 20 regular posters on the Mudcat. I know I'm one of them. Who else would admit to being a "regular poster" here? At least in the BS section...

(And forget about the jokes concerning bowel movements, okay? That's not what "regular" is meant to refer to in this context.)

I may not have been going for 100% accuracy in that post LH....

As a guess though, I might be tempted to wager that it's under 50...

But first we gotta define 'regular poster'... more than 2 or 3 posts a day? more? less?????

I go between occasional and regular depending on the threads. I open up the 'Cat every day to see what's happening.

Although he posts a lot I would have to say that The Shambles is not a regular poster. I seriously doubt that Roger has had a good, healthy shit since maybe 1998. He's such an uptight-tight-ass that his turds go straight to a jewelery store for polishing and cutting. I hear that Prince Charles recently acquired a Shambles Brown Diamond for Camilla.

One way to estimate how many are regular readers/contributors would be to go to the Mudcat Members link, pull down one of the choices, such as Location, and then seeing how many of those listed we see here regularly. Haven't done it yet but I suspect there are seriously more than 50.

'Regular' to me means someone who doesn't necessarily post here every day but comes on often enough to stay current with what's happenin'. Not to mention that I'm sure there are a lot of us who rarely post but still read.

Oh. Yeah. I'm regular by anyone's figuring.

Subject: RE: BS: How many 'regular posters' do we have?

It depends on the interest I have in what threads are up at the time as to whether I post. If I don't see something that interests me, I'm not going to bother to post just for the sake of posting. I'd say I'm a fairly regular poster, although I could perhaps be just an occasional poster. It depends on what the definition of "regular" is.

How many registered Mudcatters do we have? Well, the last "welcome" thread was directed at new member Marty.by, who is member #18085. the welcome thread was begun 8 February. I suppose there are other new membes since then, and I could figure out exactly how many, but I'm guessing February 8 is recent enough to give you a good idea. I'd say half of those 18,000 are valid memberships, and half are goofed-up or duplicated registrations.
I have no way of telling how many are "regular" members. You can get a guess by looking at "members since last visit," and doing a tally. There are some whizbang computer geeks around here who can probably figure out a way to tally without tallying....

I suspect that is ONLY true if you count each and ever letter in each and every post in each and ever thread a "hit" every single time that thread is displayed

OK, I just counted 91, and could have tallied more- the 'Location' link is not a complete count, by any means. Ninety one does include people like Spaw, however, because although he is not posting frequently he still knows what is going on and so he is obviously a regular lurker. (Hi, Spaw!)

I'm a quasi-regular poster. Sometimes when I should have and didn't I'm a "sup-poster".

Whoever's compiling my writings is a com-poster.

Please: "regular" = recurring with a fixed periodicity.

We have (at least the English speakers here have) no regular posters. We may well have many frequent posters, but the question is so vague without adequate numeration as to defy response.

Count me in as a regular poster though how many comments I post depends on the topics of the threads, and my mood, and the free time I can squeeze in from work [don't ask. don't tell] and what's going on at home, and what's going on elsewhere in [with/to] my life...

Same as everyone else, I reckon.

And while I'm here, welcome to Mudcat, Purple Foxx!

Love your name. I hope to see it around these parts alot.

While you're here, remember to share, learn, and enjoy!!

Being a moon child, I'm irregular -it's all mood. Partly a reaction against the Dr.Spock (not Mr. thank you) regime.

I think the question was a rough sort of enquiry and needs arough-and-ready rather than anorak/superaccurate response.

So I'd say, more than you think.

I see in my mind's eye someone doing a graph of "recent"(define, define, for God's sake) postings, showing who is most frequent, 2nd, etc. I'm pretty sure I'm 48th in the UK evenings. But then I listen to my body; when it says "Go"...

There's a simple explanation for that 6:43 PM post, Azizi. You see, I didn't specify in which time zone, counting base, universe, or dimension I post.

If you look at my posting history for this day you will see that it appears I have posted eleven times at various times during the day. Not so. That is only the way things appear to a casual observer who adheres to the mundane space-time conventions held by the majority of the people who inhabit this planet. I have, in fact, posted precisely 3.2435395 times at exactly the times I stated.

You just have to think outside of the box. WAY outside of the box.

I think it would be more like a couple of hundred regular posters. You see certain names dominate, but then there's another wider circle who post only a few times a week.

It's very few, Martin. I've been watching that fairly closely. I suppose everybody does it once in a great while, but usually not to cause trouble.

I was pretty regular for a couple of years there, but not since my neighborhood became part of Lake Pontchartrain about six months ago. I'm just starting to come back here a little bit, once in a while, as my life gradually returns to something-like-normal.

I think Clinton is way wrong with his lowball estimate of "10 or 20 regular posters," regardless of how you define regular. I would estimate that there are at least a hundred distinct and recognizable personalities who were participating regularly back in August, last time I was a daily Mudcatter. I'm sure a few others besides myself have dropped out since then, but I'm also quite sure that an equivalent number of newbies have achieved "regular" status during the same period.

Part of the reason why I suddenly disappeared upon the arrival of Katrina, and why I have remained absent, is that I no longer have a job where I have to sit at a computer eight hours a day and where it's just too tempting and too easy to goof off. I don't think this is unusual. I can remember one very regular character who suddenly seemed to disappear a couple of years back. When he finally made a return appearance, he explained that he had retired from the job where he had been conducting his entire cyberspace life. Like many of us, he didn't even have internet service at home, or at least not a high-speed connection.

My question: how many "regular posters" do their regular posting on their own time (i.e., outside working hours), using their own computers and connections? Well, anyone who's self employed, of course, but who else? I'd be willing to bet that most of these messages ~ certainly most of the "BS" participation ~ originates from the workplace...
