The newschannels are reporting busting up a "stolen body parts" ring-where a mortician (or maybe a couple) had an "in" on recent corpses, and took them to a "special room" in the mortuary, and with the help of a NYC Oral surgeon, harvested bones, tendons, ligaments, etc from corpses, which unsuspecting surgeons used for implantations. Problem is, some of these organs/parts were AIDS-infected, or the people died of cancer, or had hepatitis, etc. etc. So now, folks are walking around with this diseased cadavor part in their body. How sleazy are some people willing to go for a buck? They replaced the stolen parts with PVC (like in place of the bones). YECCH--and ghoulish, and sick, and--too many expletives to list!

Yeah, and some of the parts came from Alaister Cooke (of Masterpiece Theater fame).

This, I feel, is what happens when a market develops. I'm an organ donorer and so is my wife. Organs should be free and available to everyone because, unless you have RELIGIOUS reasons, your body parts should be made available for FREE to anyone who needs them (assuming they're usable, of course).

But then, I'm a radical in this.

I am also radical about aborted fetuses -- I think that the bodies should be used for stem cell research, harvested to help other babies, and so on. And NOBODY, but NOBODY, makes money off of it -- no payment to anyone, and the requirement for the cells, etc. is by law.

This has been widely reported in the U.S. in the last couple of days. Here is a link to Four Indicted in Case of Tissue Theft.

It really is a troubling story, though I must contest the remark above that these people died of Hepatitis and AIDS--they didn't say that. What they said is that no screening took place to determine anything about the cause of death or to transmit that information with the tissue that was sold. So while there may be AIDS or hepatitis, we don't know that yet.

MaineDog, you need to get over the idea that you can dictate to others what they do with their lives or when they choose to have children. The personal choices of others should not be subjected to the dogma of your religious beliefs.

Stem cell research is a completely different topic. Stem cells come from days old embreyos. (I believe they're the ones from from in vito fertilization that don't get implanted, and never created just for the stem cells. They're typically disposed of.) Abortions and fetuses (not to mention their body parts!) have nothing to do with stem cell research except in propaganda. My guess is MaineDog got some of that propaganda and didn't research it further because it came from someone he unquestioningly believed. It happens.

I can't imagine what I'd feel like to learn I'd been the recipient of something that was stolen out of a corpse.

Thank you every donor everywhere.
When receiving my new organ my own surgeon flew by helo from Mass to Maine (I'm not wealthy by a long shot), personally removed the organ from the donor, who was BTW was at the medical center still warm (cold is no good) & then proceeded to fly back with it, ran all sorts of second tests to confirm the recent tests & tests for their own (& mine) concerns, opened me, put the organ in me & didn't leave my side until the organ started pumping, another surgeon sowed me up. No questions of what was going inside me. The science of transplanting leaves no questions as to who it came from & why & what the health of the organ was in or where the organ came from & that persons medical history and why they died & what effects it may have on whither or not the donors organ will be acceptable for a transplant. An example a prisoner's organ is not expectable right from Jump Street. Whither or not this is reasonable may be debated but they (the transplant team) have a very strict guideline that gets followed to the T.

About aborted fetuses & stem cell research from what I've read here those screaming are really talking about non issues & I'd say you'd need a refresher course on what you're talking about.

Alastair Cooke's family commented on this in the media.

Not only were they distressed that his body had been desecrated in this way but they stated that he had cancer and were concerned that the bones which were removed would carry those cancerous cells to any recipient.

Even the idea of tissue/organ transplants leaves me cold and ... Sorry, but I doubt I could ever bring myself ever agree to such a procedure, either as recipient or donor (but particularly as recipient). And I do hope life continues to spare me the necessity of ever having to make that decision (beyond simply not signing the donor card on my drivers license, that is).

A few weeks ago an acquaintance committed suicide. In his mid-40's, this person had been a heavy smoker, alcoholic and drug abuser all his adult life. For the last couple years right up to his death, he'd been smoking 2 packs of cigarettes and drinking at least a case of beer a day, as well as abusing Percodans and other prescription/illegal drugs. It was so bad near the end that he'd driven most of his friends away. Including me. :-(

Anyway, the doctors kept him alive long enough to get his wife's permission to remove his organs. And within 24 hours of his death, some poor soul had that heart installed in their chest. Can't give you the complete list of organs that were relocated, but I will say that at the funeral (open casket) his trunk looked like a deflated balloon.

And I just couldn't believe it. Who in their right mind would install a heavy smoker/drinker/drug abuser's heart/organs into somebody else?? Are medical professionals, in general, so terrified by even the thought of death they'll do ANYTHING to put it off, even just for a few weeks? No wonder people are stealing organs for resale!

I'd rather suffer my own physical ailments and take my chances, myself. Even if that meant I'd be six feet under in a hurry. But hey, to each their own.

I actually think harvesting human organs is far more disgusting than donating organs after your dead. I mean, why waste perfectly good organs that can save somebodies life. On the other hand....

I know a twin brother who gave his kidney to his twin. Oddly enough, the twin who gave the kidney took longer to heal than the one who received it. Of course, the joke was that the older, stronger one owed it to the weaker one because he stole most of the nutrients in the womb.

In any event, it is a highly personal choice. I just wish more people would consider it. Most people don't even think about it.

...and I do think that donors should be screened and have a clean bill of health. It would be heartbreaking to go through a transplant and then find out the part was defective.
