Hi, folks,

My son & I plan to visit the Manchester area for a week or two at the beginning of this August. Can you suggest things that we ought to do or see while we are there? I know that Whitby Folk Festival is the 3rd week, but we will be leaving before then. My son has never been to England. I've been, a couple of times, but not for ages. Any suggestions will be welcome.

best,

bbc

in Manchester - you're not too far from the Derbyshire Peak District which is a national park, a area of outstanding natural beauty. Just outside the town of Bakewell is Monsall head, a viaduct in a nice setting and you can sample Theakston's Old Peculiar, which is a very distinctive English beer. Monday is the market day at Bakewell, which is very lively.

In Manchester there is Old Trafford Cricket ground, and if you are lucky you might get to see a day's play in a test match - when the national team play a team from another country. You will be there at the height of the cricket season. Even for county games, the standard of play is very high.

Just down the road from Manchester is Liverpool. which has a nascent Beatles industry. They still haven't really come to terms with exploiting the phenomena that was The Beatles, but there is still quite a lot to see. A recreation of the Cavern Club in Matthew Street where they used to play and a Beatles museum in the redeveloped dockland area. And there are bus tours of where The Beatles lived and you can see all places like Penny Lane that are mentioned in their songs. And of course you can take a ferry across the Mersey.

there is Lowry(named after LS Lowry) art gallery in Manchester and and lowry centre where they give concerts and also the G Mex centre where the big concerts and exhibitions are given.

it's difficult to know what to recommend without knowing what you like, but I am sure we all wish you a good time visiting England.

About an hour or two's drive north of Manchester are some of the most sublime landscapes in England. There is the Lake District, of course, but don't neglect the Fells and woodlands around Morecambe Bay (Arnside, Silverdale, Cartmell etc.)or the Fells to the east of the M6 motorway (Kirby Lonsdale up to Appleby-in-Westmoreland in the Eden Valley). I'm a resident of Manchester and it's difficult to describe the buzz I still get from getting onto the motorway on a Sunday morning and waiting for those wonderful hills to appear on the horizon - highly recommended!

If you like a good Irish session, there are several round Manchester- try the Beech in Chorlton on a Monday night. Also several excellent folk clubs, but not having visited them for some years I'll leave others to fill in on that.

If it's technology you're into, the Manchester Science Museum is brilliant, and it includes the world's oldest surviving railway station.

Steam trains on the East Lancashire Railway, north from Bury at the end of the tram route from the city centre.

The Peak district is less than an hour away by train, either towards Buxton, Glossop or Edale/ Hope/ Bamford. Bring stout boots.

Sadly no New Mills Klezmer session in August, too many people are away.

Thanks for your response, so far. I will probably be taking a day trip to Oldham to visit an elderly relative & hope to be spending some time w/ Bill & Lorna Sables. I enjoy folk music, but I know my son wants to do some sightseeing, too. We were thinking of visiting Edinburgh.

You must visit Chester only 40 mins drive. Roman walled city ,ampitheatre, river, race course cathedral and lots and lots of music.
Look at the Folk Orbit on line for lots of place and whats on .Pop into the Ship Victory in Chester, on a Tuesday night for a great singaround. and great beer. Be prepared to stay for a while.

For sightseeing you couldn't do much better than the Yorkshire Dales - Nearer to Manchester than the Lakes and far less crowded:-) I will hapily do you a driving tour and a walk or two if you like - Let me know.

Cheers

If you are staying with the Sables (East Yorkshire) and travelling to Edinburgh you might be able to fit in a trip to Saltburn Folk Festival (North Yorkshire) 11th, 12th, 13th August 2006.

What fun, Barbara! My best advice is, plan as much as you can before you go, but be ready to change plans at a moment's notice!

Hi, folks,

Well, I finally got my plans together. Looks like David & I will be staying w/ Sables & going places from there, as Bill sees fit & time permits. Some of you may remember that David is the one who originally programmed the Mudcat member pages. We will be leaving NY on August 1st & returning August 10th. I wonder if we will meet any of the British Mudcatters? Looking forward to it!

best,

Barbara

Try the Cross keys folk club at Uppermill just on the outskirts of Oldham, Wednesday nights, the gig list isn't complete for your dates but normally guests are of a high standard and you get to drink John Willie Lee's

In Middleton junction there's a brewery so fine
where they make a potion much sweeter than wine
if you've never tried it then now is the time
for a pint of John Willie Lee's a pint of John willie Lee's
