A group I sang with in high school (1964-65) always used Marney. Guess we were just better transcribers than Anglo and Joe because I don't remember having the songbook. I mostly remember it because it was the only tune in our inventory that I got to play a harmonica part.

That's what I thought it was, too, Anglo. I just looked it up an a Kingston Trio songbook - it says "Was there I met Marney."

So, go figure. I think I'll keep singing "morning" - but I sing the song only when I'm singing in the car with the CD.

My memory of the lyrics is:

"When we hit Trinidad, 'twas there on that morning..."

Of course, that's from the original LP which I haven't heard for nearly 40 years.

Looks like you have a pretty good transcription of the Kingston Trio recording, Mr. Happy. The Kingston Trio Close-Up CD says the song was co-written by somebody named "Weissman." No doubt that's Dick Weissman who founded The Journeymen with "Papa" John Phillips and "Flowers in your hair" Scott McKenzie. I have the three Capitol Journeymen albums - apparently, they didn't record "Oh, Sail Away," and there were no recordings of the song other than the one by the Kingston Trio.

The song uses phrases from a number of traditional folk songs, but I don't think I'd say it's based on any one particular song. the Kingston Trio also recorded "Sail Away Ladies" in 1959 for the Here We Go Again album, but the song wasn't included on the LP and wasn't released until Kingston Trio reissues came out. You'll find more information at Kingston Trio Liner Notes.

THE KINGSTON TRIO lyrics

Oh, Sail Away
(John Phillips)

Just a-singin', Ooo, sail away. Ooo, sail away.

A man would be a fool to spend all his money
and have to go to sea once more.
But when those brown skin gals start callin' you honey,
you'll be a sailin' from that shore.

Just a-singin', Ooo, sail away. Ooo, sail away.

When we hit Trinidad, was there I met Marni.
Don't you know we started drinkin' rum.
But now I feel so bad. She took all my money
and now I sail with the mornin' sun.

Just a-singin', Ooo, sail away. Ooo, sail away.

So all ye sailor lads who want to go sportin',
remark ye well what I do say.
Don't trust them brown skin gals. They'll be your misfortune.
You'll be at sea till your dyin' day.

Just a-singin', Ooo, sail away. Ooo, sail away.

Once again I쳌fll, Ooo, sail away. Ooo, sail away.

sang this tonight at Mr Happy & his Cohorts sesh - anyone know if there's any more verses?
