Good one from today's Borowitz Report:

STUDY: AMBIEN USERS INVADE COUNTRIES IN THEIR SLEEP

Wake Up With No Memory of Reasons for Invasion, No Exit Strategy

A mounting pile of anecdotal evidence suggests that users of the popular sleep medication Ambien may invade countries in their sleep, and then wake up with no memory of the reasons they invaded, according to a study released today. The study, conducted by the University of Minnesota, attempts to shed light on a little-known side effect of Ambien, in which users who are fast asleep go on country-invading binges.

Dr. Davis Logsdon, who supervised the University of Minnesota study, said that Ambien users who have no memory of invading countries while asleep wake up with no idea of what to do with the country they invaded.

"Making matters worse, they have no exit strategy, either," Dr; Logsdon said. "Their only option is to remain in the country they invaded, and keep taking Ambien."

"Unfortunately, there's no treatment for these destructive sleep episodes," Dr. Logsdon said. "You just have to wait, and after eight years it's over."

Aaagh phooey! Ambien is overrated. Took it for a bit--even had a drinkie afterwards. Did I wake up dead? Comatose? Eating my fridge clean? Invading another country? Nope. The stuff will let you sleep however-esp with a vodka martini shaken, not stirred. Bond...James Bond.

"Ambien and other sleep medicines can cause a special type of memory loss. It should not be taken on an overnight airplane flight of less than 7 to 8 hours, since "traveler's amnesia" may occur."

Certain antidepressants can have interesting interactions. My wife's oncologist told us of one of his patients who was on antidepressants and took Lunesta--he slept for 48 hours straight!

I can't afford either of 'em...wanted something for sleep and my doctor said Lunesta, in particular, is prohibitive. HMO won't cover even part of it... Must be nice to afford $6-$10 for a nights sleep.

I took Ambien once and liked it too much - incredible technicolor dreams and deep deep sleep. The last time I had a sleep problem I asked for two pills. It is the only drug I enjoy.

I just pop an antihistamine, Bill, and a great night's sleep soon follows.

JEEZ, FOLKS, IT WAS A JOKE, ALREADY. The gnus in my neck of the woods has been chock-a-block with reports of ordinary, law-abiding people getting into their cars and driving to supermarkets and shoplifting and stuff in their sleep after taking Ambien. The Borowitz Report was riffing on those reports. Gotta laugh once in a while to keep from crying about what a certain piece of foliage (others might pick a less polite appellation) has up and done to a certain country in the Middle East.

I have taken Ambien...maybe 4 times....but I do know that I sent out some emails that I don't remember writing. The stuff makes me loopy...but it does let me sleep when I desparately need it. I still have about 25 pills left....last resort stuff.

Bill D, if you go to the Lunesta Website and register they will send you a voucher for a free prescription for 7 pills. After that, I'm afraid you'r on your own.

Most name Brand Drugs offer similar first prescription free offers. I am part of a great Imitrex program whereby they send me $10 discount checks each month to offset my $30 co-pay for the drug. if I wanted to switch to the pills from the nasal spray they'd comp me my first month's Prescription. I prefer the spray so I'm not taking them up on it.

If anyone here has to take a brand name drug from the US, I can help you find a discount program for it. I do it for local senior citizens. And, I don't charge money like the grifters on TV who do so for a fee.

BillD - I looked up that offer and sadly it is only for 4 free tablets but that's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, right?

here you are:

Never mix a sleeping pill with a laxative.
