Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: GUEST,mack/misophist Date: 18 Mar 06 - 07:46 AM We don't seem to have Daddies Sauce in the US. Guess I'll have to stick with HP. It can be improved with a little Tabasco. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 18 Mar 06 - 07:47 AM Foolestroupe, HP's Brown Sauce isn't it? Are you thinking of Tomato Ketchup? In the UK, 'HP' means brown sauce and 'Red Sauce'means tomato ketchup. You'd get some very funny looks if someone asked you to pass the HP and you gave them tomato ketchup. LOL! |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Mar 06 - 08:15 AM So what's in HP, if it contains no tomatos? |

Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 18 Mar 06 - 10:45 AM There is no sauce in the known universe which can compare favorably with that of The Pig Barbecue in Jacksonville, Florida. It is a fact. It is well-known that all references to "ambrosia" or "manna" in ancient religious tracts were originally references to Pig Barbecue sauce but had to be changed because it would be too much work for the priests to have to explain how their various gods were able to partake of something that wouldn't be created for thousands of years. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Brass Monkey Date: 18 Mar 06 - 10:49 AM No you've got it all wrong, the best sauce is good old British gravy. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Maryrrf Date: 18 Mar 06 - 10:54 AM I think HP sauce tastes a lot like A1 Sauce in the US. I like it on some things. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Mar 06 - 10:54 AM Cousin's barbecue sauce is the one I prefer if I'm planning to spill it on my HP. (Though what I spilled on the HP yesterday was Diet Rite cola) |

Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: open mike Date: 18 Mar 06 - 11:50 AM is this discussion about Worchestershire sauce, then? Sorcha knows how to make it...we got some tamarind from a thai food catalog to put in it...that is the hardest ingredient to find...and that may be ine secret ingredient that gives it the flavor...no, wait, it is probably the unspecified spices what ever those are... the most commonly available brande in the U.S. is http://www.lea-perrins.com/selecta.php\ here is a recipe--but who in the world knows what sauce sauce is?? http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/sauces/02/rec0200.html I think the recipe often contains anchovies.. and this one has ginger: http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/sauces/worcestershire01.html is it really pronounced "wooster"? here is the wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcestershire_sauce |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: David C. Carter Date: 18 Mar 06 - 12:03 PM "wooster" it is. Will check out your recipes.Nice one. Cheers David |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: open mike Date: 18 Mar 06 - 12:17 PM ok i looked it up HP = Harry Palmer http://www.hpfoods.com/brands/hpsauce/ and the giant food company Heinz has bought the company and from this report: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4110006.stm there is mention of the brand we see in the US: "Danone had bought HP Foods - which also makes sauces under the Lea & Perrins brand - for £199m from Hanson in 1998." and it is no longer owned by the French company, since June... UK-based HP Foods, which also makes sauces under the Lea & Perrins, Daddies and Amoy names, was sold by French group Danone in June. sounds like these companies are being tossed around like hot potatoes... |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Purple Foxx Date: 18 Mar 06 - 12:24 PM Harry Palmer? So is the Funeral of Danone's ownership taking place in Berlin? |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Clinton Hammond Date: 18 Mar 06 - 01:47 PM Ever since I started putting HP on my french fries, I've even considered using ketchup.... on anything... "with a little Tabasco" So yer adding vinegar to vinegar? Sounds pretty redundant to me... http://www.melindas.com/ Best all-round in the world |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 18 Mar 06 - 02:46 PM HP isn't Worcester sauce. Totally different beast. And yes, it's 'wooster-sher', not 'werchester-shyre' as I heard one American refer to it. It made I larff! :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Mar 06 - 03:24 PM Our affectionate name for the sauce is "What's-It-Shit Sauce." |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: number 6 Date: 18 Mar 06 - 05:12 PM HP ... Luv it!! BTW, for those Canucks that are fans of HP, I suggest that you can save $1.00 a bottle buy purchasing President's Choice Steak Sauce ... it is HP made by the Canadian Company E.D. Smith ... who happens to have the HP manufacturing licence here in Canada. sIx |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: DougR Date: 18 Mar 06 - 07:59 PM I assume HP is a sauce that is used to flavor steaks, roasts, other types of meat? Is it applied to the meat before, or after, cooking? I've never heard of HP sauce. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Mar 06 - 08:58 PM HP Sauce is a 'British Thing' - it come in square sided bottles, and we only have it in Aus cause of our historical connections. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Mar 06 - 11:38 PM Tamarind is the slightly bitter taste in both "'Wooster'-type" sauces and HP. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: michaelr Date: 19 Mar 06 - 03:02 AM HP, A-1, Wooster - it's all basically the same flavor type. Anchovies optional, I guess. I use a bit in recipes at times, but I sure don't like it glopped on my steak. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Mar 06 - 03:10 AM I wouldn't trust Wikipedia for everything, but their article on HP Sauce is interesting. And you can get it animated at HP Foods. Sure sounds like A1 sauce to me. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: GUEST Date: 19 Mar 06 - 03:30 PM "Cette sauce de haute qualite est un melange d'epice, des fruits orienteux et..." Does anyone else remember whwn they had the ingredients listed in French on the label? as a compulsive reader I was fascinated by this as a child. |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Clinton Hammond Date: 19 Mar 06 - 03:33 PM "Sure sounds like A1 sauce to me" HP beat A1 hands down in my book... but I wouldn't put either of them on a good cut of meat... For that matter... if you aren't a total mess, and can cook a good slab of meat even half way decently, it shouldn't NEED any sauce..... |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 19 Mar 06 - 04:09 PM I grew up on the stuff, and I love it. In fact, I just finished a chicken and HP sammitch. When I was a kid we had HP and bread and butter sammitches. Seamus |

Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Rasener Date: 19 Mar 06 - 05:43 PM How dare people confuse Worcester Sauce with HP sauce. As a Brummy, we were proud of our HP Sauce, M&B Mild, Ansells Bitter, Cadburys Chocolate, GEC, British Leyland, Aston Villa, The Rotunda (which my brothet heped to build), Spaghetti Junction, The Brummies Speedway Team, Birchfield Harriers (one of the finest athletic clubs - my father ran for them, and should have gone to the olympics, which his parents couldn't afford, so he didn't go (major diapointment for him), Warwickshire Cricket Club, Jasper Carrot (but not his crap B'ham City :-) ), The Bullring. Ah those were the days when work was plenty and Brum was a thriving city. Get very dispondant when I go back now. Better come back to reality at Market Rasen where the grass is green, the air fresh and bugger all to do except for going to great folk clubs such as Gainborough and Market Rasen. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 19 Mar 06 - 06:07 PM The French on the label was 'tradition' destroyed by some stupid arrogant ignorant marketing weasel. Subject: RE: BS: HP Sauce From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 19 Mar 06 - 07:05 PM I used to have that French bit memorised!: "Cette sauce de hate qualité est un mélange fruits orienteaux, des épices, et de vinaigre de malt." There's more, but I've forgotten it. Anyone? Seamus |
