My sympathies Sorcha. I lost my two 18 year old cats within a few weeks of each other while I was extremely sick. A good friend insisted on my acquiring a new kitten after a while, now I have 2 again because I found that two felines together are much more than twice as happy as one.

May you keep pleasant memories of both your lost friends, and may you also find out just what it was that caused the sudden deterioration, so that you can avoid it with your next lot of 4 legged friends.

My thoughts are with you. Hang in there.

Sorcha, is your house safe for humans--are you exposed to the same thing that killed your dogs? Be safe--move out for a while if you have to until the problem is absolutely diagnosed and mitigated. Your homeowners insurance should cover it.

Yes, Don and Maggie.....I am sterilizing everything.....we are as paranoid as anyone. Waiting on lab results and cultures to see what we are dealing with. We are almost certain that it was K9 hepatitis or lepto which humans can get. The entire basement floor has been chloroxed to a fare thee well, and I'm shampooing carpets and furniture with Simple Green. Can't use Clorox on carpets. The odd thing is that the grand dog never got sick (had blood work done on him) and neither of the cats got sick.

The probable primary cause was a sewage back up in the basement....feces...dogs walked on it before we discovered it (seldom go down there) and licked their feet....but, so do the cats. Grand dog doesn't go down there.

A professional carpet cleaner should be able to recommend or use a germicidal agent more powerful than Simple Green. For the contamination you suggest may be responsible, IMO professional advice is strongly indicated.

Yes, there are several sub-types of the bacterium and immunity to one does not necessarily confer immunity to another but most vaccines are designed to immunize against the most common sub-types.

I know this is an emotionally sensitive time for you and I'm not trying to question the care you received from your vet, it's just that as a dog owner and lover myself I see this as an opportunity to learn about something I have not encountered and be prepared for if ever I do.

Ok...got partial labs back....the bacteria were E. Coli and enterococci....both transferable to other mammals from sewage. He also could have gotten them from the ruptured bile duct.

He also had clotting issues with the platelets. Not sure why. Should have full labs in about 2 weeks.

Have been scrubbing everything with chlorine bleach or Lysol, rubber gloves, mucho showers, hand washing etc. Being as careful as we can.

Thanks friends.

E.Coli and enterococcus are normal intestinal flora but can cause problems in wounds or in organs especially a particularly resistant strain of enterococcus called VRE or vancomycin resistant enterococcus. It has become particularly problematic in hospitals and nursing homes.

You take it easy and be very careful.

Enterococcus

The enterococcus group is a subgroup of the fecal streptococci. The enterococci portion of the streptococcus group is a valuable bacterial indicator for determining the extent of fecal contamination of recreational surface waters. Studies in marine and fresh water studies indicate that enterococci are the most efficient bacterial indicator of water quality. Enterococcus is a bacteria found in the human intestine and therefore a good indicator of human waste.

Another site says "Pathology Enterococci are the leading cause of nosocomial infection (or secondary infection aquired while in a hospital). They are responsible for approximately 110,000 cases of urinary tract infection, 25,000 cases of bacteremia, 40,000 wound infections, and 1,100 cases of endocarditis yearly in the United States. To infect hosts enterococci primarily colonize mucosal surfaces. They also must evade host defenses although little is known about the actual mechanism of evasion. The pathogenicity of the organism is believed to be closely associated with its ability to produce cytolysin, a toxin that causes rupture of a variety of target membranes, including bacterial cells, erythrocytes, and other mammalian cells."
