Subject: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Dolores Mac Mahon Date: 06 Apr 06 - 01:58 PM Hi, I'm one of those godforsaken gals who's never happy unless she can lay her hands on a mean-looking, notebook-wielding, microphone-holding folk-music-collecting kind of guy. Let's face it, the USA is currently the pits for this (Springsteen has a lot to answer for), so I've turned my attention to Ireland. I've been told that there are some truly wild collectors in Clare and Antrim. Does anyone know how to contact them (and I really do mean 'contact them') or should I turn my attentions to Cork and Kerry. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Nobloodyuseorsomywifetellsme Date: 06 Apr 06 - 02:03 PM You should definitely try Noel McShane in Waterford - a mine of information - or Jimmy Turner in Wexford. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Apr 06 - 11:48 PM Well, there's Sandy Paton in Connecticut, and Art Thieme in Illinois. I have been sworn not to tell whether they're hunky or not, but they definitely did collecting. Jerry Rasmussen, did you do some, too? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Big Al Whittle Date: 07 Apr 06 - 02:58 AM from the little I know about folksong collectors - I think I'd widen my terms of reference if I were you. another solution might be to get a hunk, get him a notebook, pencil and old fashioned uher taprecorder with a microphone, and earphones - keep them in a secret drawer in the bedroom - and every now and then get him to wear them. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Dolores Mac Mahon Date: 07 Apr 06 - 01:48 PM I've heard that Jimmy Carroll in Clare is the dog's biscuits! Is that true and is he really the man I'm looking for? |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Anonny Mouse Date: 07 Apr 06 - 04:41 PM I'm "hunky" and I collect folk music ephemera. So, how can we meet, and what might you be willing to do/be? Is this a new "meet a friend site"? I'm game. (Not of the deer variety!). Please PM me with your proposal. Thanks! :>) |
Subject: RE: Looking for a Hungarian folk music collector? From: Severn Date: 07 Apr 06 - 08:45 PM Bela Bartok took "Hunky" Folk Songs and put them in Classical Settings, if that counts. ....But enough of this bar talk! They just called "Last Round"! "Bela up to the bar, boys! We're in Hunky Tonk Heaven!".... |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 08 Apr 06 - 01:02 AM weelittledrummer, I think you are on the right track. Mere hunks are so much easier to find than folk song collectors. I suggest putting candles in the bedrooma and lighting them. I remember so fondly the night I went into the bedroom and the DH was lying there smiling at me while candles glowed here and there and here and there and here and... |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Marc Date: 08 Apr 06 - 09:21 AM Go to see music festivals. Many of the Chantymen are Hunky. So are some of the Chantyladies. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Azizi Date: 08 Apr 06 - 09:37 AM This sounds like a BS thread to me. A gal on Mudcat lookin for a hunk? Hmmm. Well it worked for Jacqui and Carol, soooo. ???? [Not that that was the reason those two aforementioned ladies were on Mudcat] But it "sounds like" to me that GUEST,Dolores Mac Mahon is more interested in the hunk than the music collecting Then again, I get the sense that she wants to make beautiful music with some special hunk. More power to her. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Effsee, sans cookie Date: 08 Apr 06 - 09:52 AM Folk music collectors are more likely to be Chunky than hunky!! |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Judy Date: 08 Apr 06 - 10:05 AM Dear Dolores, Or may I call you Dolly? I don't think you would describe Jim Carroll as hunky, more honky than anything. Plus, I've heard it said that he's got the smallest microphone in the business. Love, Judy. Ps., we girls must stick together. I've heard that Jimmy Carroll in Clare is the dog's biscuits! Is that true and is he really the man I'm looking for? |

Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Kaleea Date: 08 Apr 06 - 04:20 PM Mudcatcher, Mudcatcher, find me a hunk; into your files, dig and spelunk; Mudcatcher, Mudcatcher, search each Podunk; and find me a folk--y hunk! |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,NOrm "MadDawg" Siegel Date: 08 Apr 06 - 08:32 PM Hey Kaleea Hal Prince, watch your back side!!! Oy Vey!!! |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,JTS Date: 08 Apr 06 - 08:56 PM I'm more for making them up than going out and finding them, but many of my compatriots back in Newfoundland are avid colectors. Kelly Russell comes to mind and the folks in Figgy Duff and Ryans Fancy have notebooked a tune or two. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Dolores Mac Mahon Date: 09 Apr 06 - 12:00 PM Hi, folks, and thanks for the suggestions, but I really need a man who can take me to the darkest cott and coax a ballad from the most reluctant old farmer. I want to smell the sweat and reek of the tape machine's whirring and the ballpoint's scribbling. Plus, of course, he must have a big microphone. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Big Al Whittle Date: 09 Apr 06 - 12:13 PM Right I'll get onto the escort agency! You don't don't mind paying for paying for someone with lots of lead in his pencil and really outstanding microphone technique...? |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST Date: 09 Apr 06 - 02:07 PM Babe, I'm paying for nothing! |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Judy Date: 09 Apr 06 - 02:08 PM Dear Dolly, Oh dear, I've just been looking at my email of earlier and I see I've got my wires crossed. I wrote hunky where I meant to write honky and honky where I meant to write hunky, so I said Jim Carrol was more hunky than honky, where I meant to say he's more honky than hunky, if you get my meaning. Well, you know the kind of thing that can happen when you start imagining men with their clothes off. Anyway, if you're looking for a bloke with a big microphone, then I don't think Jim Carroll is for you. You know the way we girls talk ? Well, the word on the street is that his microphone hasn't worked in forty years. Love, Judy. |
Subject: RE: BS / Troll alert From: Desert Dancer Date: 09 Apr 06 - 02:22 PM BS/Troll alert: Though this topic has great potential for humor and information, I'm willing to bet that the intent of its originator is more related to the personal venom evident in these threads: Origins: The Golden Glove (Dog and Gun) West Clare Taliban abduct collector Just a heads-up... proceed as you see fit. :-( ~ Becky in Tucson |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: open mike Date: 09 Apr 06 - 02:27 PM i think there was one of these for sale--or rent--on here just recently perhaps you should meet--or perhaps you ARE this other person who was offering his services? |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Azizi Date: 09 Apr 06 - 05:16 PM Thanks for that alert, Desert Dancer. What a shame. This could have been a fun thread. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Rapparee Date: 09 Apr 06 - 09:58 PM Well, I'm pretty well stove in, lookin' something like a busted ship on a sandbar, demasted and with a big ol' hole in my port side.... Oh, hunky. I thought you said hulky. Nemmind. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: GUEST,Dolores Mac Mahon Date: 14 Apr 06 - 01:42 PM Becky, dear heart, you're well out of your depth! Try a little off-the-shoulder number and then you can strut your stuff for the big guys. As for me, I'm still looking for a guy with a big reel-to-reel. |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: gnu Date: 14 Apr 06 - 02:54 PM I am a big hunk of folk collector. And I got a nine foot rod. Stiff, but springy, for whipping just right. I carry a spare reel, with double tapered, weight forward, float line, with ten feet of 12, 8 and 4 pound lead. I cast 130 feet and my fly is a Brown Bomber. And, I got 210 yards of backing, so I can play a long time. Wanna swim in my pool? |
Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: Big Al Whittle Date: 14 Apr 06 - 04:10 PM so much for the horned beast! |

Subject: RE: Looking for a hunky folk music collector From: gnu Date: 14 Apr 06 - 07:01 PM I have casted with Ted Williams (and even close to Tom Sellick after he bought Ted's place, but never never introduced myself to Tom) ... although, I never could lay out like them. I wish, eh, NNWW. But, I stayed on parr, and we grilsed a few by times, brackish as it were. BTW... with no disrespect to Ted... actually, with GREAT respect to Ted... I have never heard a man, in my entire life, who could swear as eloquently as he. God rest your soul, you old syphylitic (look it up before you crap on me) bastard. Ted... here's to you and here's to me, and, if, by chance, we disagree, fuck you, here's to me. He liked that toast. Cool guy. |
