Subject: RE: BS: The Irish Easter Rising From: Big Al Whittle Date: 16 Apr 06 - 07:35 PM yes me too, thanks! I have got a lovely record made by the BBC in 1966, just before the last lot of troubles really kicked off - celebrating 50 years since the rising. Its a wonderful tribute and there testimonies from personal friends of Pearse and Conolly. I did come across the book that went with it a few years ago - Nottingham library had a copy. there was this sentence I remember it had such resonance. It said, "Conolly's genius was to introduce violence into a situation and a debate that had stagnated." Something along those lines Of course the person who wrote it for the BBC, never realised we were on the edge of another precipice. I wonder if it looked like genius a couple of years later. all the best for Easter to everyone al |

Subject: RE: BS: The Irish Easter Rising From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 16 Apr 06 - 08:21 PM "Genius" in that sense doesn't actually imply that it was a good idea, just that it was original. (Which in fact it wasn't.) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Irish Easter Rising From: Divis Sweeney Date: 17 Apr 06 - 06:05 AM Watched yesterdays parade on television, stomach turning. They paraded British 18 pounders on the rear of their trucks, I wonder are these the same guns they used on fellow Irishmen in the attack on the four courts ? Bertie and his government have seen the gains made in recent years by Sinn Fein in the Republic's elections and decided to go green. Funny how they never marked the 75th anniversary. They are jumping on the bandwagon. Well like any good Republican I attended my local parade which was to Remember Republicans who fought and died in 1916 for a united Ireland. Not the acceptance of 26 counties. So many would have turned in their graves at that display in Dublin yesterday. Shame on them. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Irish Easter Rising From: Paul Burke Date: 18 Apr 06 - 04:09 AM We were on holiday in Ireland in 1966. The Irish had stamps commemorating the rising, the English had World Cup stamps. When England won, the stamps were overprinted "ENGLAND WINNERS". My father wrote to the local paper in Bray suggesting that the Irish should do the same.... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Irish Easter Rising From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 18 Apr 06 - 06:22 AM According to the playwright Frank McGuinness, the whole thing was a terrible misunderstanding. Pearse only went in to the GPO for a couple of stamps... |
