Subject: searching for folk bands From: tom_green Date: 08 May 06 - 01:48 AM Hey, I'm new to mud cat cafe and i'm searching for music to play on guitar. I am familiar with bands such as the pogues, the waterboys, the oyster band and the saw doctors. Can anyone suggest any others? |
Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: GUEST,van lingle Date: 08 May 06 - 08:25 PM Hi Tom, You might want to check out Solas, if you haven't already. Their first three albums are incredible (especially the first one "Solas") and were done when John Doyle and Karen Kasey were still in the band. Danu's last two albums with their girl singer with the unpronounceable name are also worth checking out. The first Planxty album is kind of a landmark and I think you can hear it's influence on the Waterboys and maybe The Pogues. Actually all their recordings were quite good. After the Break , especially and their reunion DVD which can also be had as a CD and is priceless.vl |

There are a plethora of talented people right here in Mudville that are worth a listen and that have CD's available. I'll start the listwith just a few, and I'm sure many others will chime in with more: Jerry Rassmussen (Gospel Messengers) Big Al Whittle aka weelittledrummer Bobert (Bob Harrison--blues) the late, GREAT, Rick Fielding and many more.... Other bands or guitar players that come to mind....Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Critten Hollow String Band, Red Clay Ramblers, Chatham County Line, Alice Gerrard, Stillhouse Bottom Band, Carl Jones, .... Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 09 May 06 - 01:25 AM Try James Keelaghan, Gordon Lightfoot, Stan Rogers, Bill Staines, Dave Mallett, Tom Russell, Chuck Pyle, Jack Williams, Cheryl Wheeler, Nanci Griffith, Ellis Paul, and,...well,...gee, that's a good start. Have fun at any rate, and don't forget all the Celtic groups and solo act that are out there, too. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: GUEST,noddy Date: 09 May 06 - 04:05 AM You could always seek out your local folk club or session and go along. All new support is welcome and there will be lots of different "thoughts " on what to listen to if you chat to those there. |
Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 May 06 - 04:07 AM Where abouts are you , Tom? A good folk club nearby could give you accress to a wealth of talent and advice you would have never heard of otherwise! From our local scene (NW England) for guitar talent I would suggest Pete Ryder and Phil Hare. For session music you might want to try the BBC folk site virtual session. Cheers Dave the Gnome |

Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: pavane Date: 10 May 06 - 02:27 AM If you want to play or accompany traditional folk songs on guitar, look out for people like Martin Carthy, Nic Jones (and many others). English styles are very different to US. |
Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: Grab Date: 10 May 06 - 07:25 AM Other older British bands in that same kind of vein would be The Albion Band, Show of Hands, Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, Lindisfarne and Pentangle. If you're feeling masochistic then try Steeleye Span, but I don't recommend it. Depending on your guitar ability, you might also want to dig out stuff by Davey Graham, John Renbourn, Richard Thompson and Bert Jansch. "Anji" by Davey Graham is generally a rite-of-passage for fingerpickers. Graham. |
Subject: RE: searching for folk bands From: Maid in Cyberspace Date: 10 May 06 - 07:27 AM You might try Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly. They are together the folk duo Atwater-Donnelly (their website's right here) and while they play a lot of other things besides the guitar they are worth a try anyway. |
