Subject: Kendall & Jacqui UK London SUNDAY
From: Catherine Jayne
Date: 06 Jun 06 - 05:02 PM

I know this is short notice but if anyone is at a loose end on Sunday (11th June) afternoon and fancies meeting up at The Black Lion Plaistow E13 in the afternoon for some music and singing, Jacqui and Kendall will be there and I know they would love to see you as many of you as possible.

For thouse of you who have not met Kendall and Jacqui before they are a lovely couple who are active in the US folk scene and have an excellent knowledge of folk music. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and socialise and make music with 2 wonderful people.

IF you need directions PM myself or Micca.

The pub has real ale and warm cosy feel

Who's up for it??

Khatt

Sorry Mike - we won't be in that part of the world this trip.

So far, in two weeks, we've been to Cornwall, Wales and Wiltshire and are at the moment in Shepperton but heading off to spend three days with Giok in Scotland. We're back to the US on the 15th and that just doesn't leave enough time for a visit to the middle of the country.

Too many places, not enough time.........

Well, Jacqui is wonderful anyway..........Those of you who have read Kendall's posts over the past year can tell he's nothing but a shadow of his former self and his former self didn't have much of a shadow to start with. Fortunately Jacqui has been just the right thing for him and he now can sometimes evacuate his bladder and wind his watch with only limited assistance, although he still requires someone to empty his drool cup every few minutes.

Don't let this put you off though. Jacqui would love to see you all I know.

Seamus met his match at the Dog Park and I didn't have a camera. They waltzed and cha-cha'd and two steps but neither one ever got to lead if you know what I mean. The crowd appreciated the Fred and Ginger show though.

Kendall - possession is 9/10 of the law.

And don't let Jacqui's sweet disposition fool you. She has a heart of ice if you cross her. Remember, she has to cope with Kendall every day.

Got you post card, guys. Thank you. Land's End looks beautiful. Keep in mind that we have one here too at the end of Bailey Island. (and therein lies a tale...)

So far as possession is concerned, just remember that Kendall has a gun and if he wants his dawg back......

Spaw - you bin spying on the Morse household! There has been a lot of improvemnet but there is still a way to go. However, I do like a challenge! :0)

Ah hah! They bought one postcard in bulk!

I was amused by the sign. From Lands End (as far south as you can go in England without getting your feet wet) to John O'Groats (as far north as you can go in Scotland without getting your feet wet) is about the same as the distance we drove on the last day of our run out to Montana in '02. And that was the last day of a four day drive. Of course we were on Interstates that were less crowded in rush hour than the British motorways appear to be in the middle of the night...

We had a splendid afternoon chatting and watching Kendall melt. No music because only a few of us turned up but it was wonderful just listening to old jokes, new jokes and general happy nattering.

I delivered the hugs as promised, even if I can't remember who ordered them, I put Kendall's knee into gear several times on the drive to our place and we had pasta and veggies with more jokes and a fan.

I have to report that other than melting like the Wicked Witch of the West, Kendall looked fit and well, bigger than I remembered and Jackie looks, if possible, happier than ever.

Oh, and we had a chat with Sins over dinner - she phoned to say hello... I think Seamus may be writing out doggy divorce papers.... somehow I don't reckon it'll be an amicable situation...

I would put alimony at 4 bags of kibble a month and visiting rights at weekends and every second Wednesday, providing Jacqui lets him out of the cellar for that long. Kendall gets to keep any product of the 'walk in the park' incidents.

We had a good time although Kendall really was suffering with the heat. Like the snow, in Maine they are so used to extremes of weather that they have the machinery to manage it more than does the UK.

Anyway, the landlord turned off the big screen TV so that we could hear ourselves speak, we sat Kendall under the ceiling fan to cool him down and fed him a couple of pints of extra cold Guinness to help the process.

It was so good to see Liz, Manitas, Micca and Leadfingers again and just to sit a talk and laugh with them for a few hours. Kendall managed to make Liz squeak three times during the proceedings - quite an achievement.

Many thanks Liz, for providing a lovely meal at very short notice, it was much appreciated, and what a surprise to have a phone call from Ms Mary Sunshine back in Maine.

We've got four more days before we fly home. We're visiting with My Guru tomorrow night and hopefully will get to the Hertford Folk Club on Wednesday although at the moment I have to get my windscreen replaced after some charmimg little thug lobbed a missile at the windscreen yesterday. Luckily the screen held for the drive back to Shepperton but needs fairly urgent attention!

Anyway, it's always a pleasure to get together with good friends and a pint of COLD Guinness.

Damned inconvenient as well, requiring numerous phone calls to get an outfit who will come out to replace the windscreen rather than us taking it to them and then having to collect it again. It's going to cost me £50 for the policy excess as well. I wonder at the mentality of the little turds who think that this type of thing is 'fun', but what goes around generally comes around and maybe one day that idiot will find out what it's like to be on the receiving end.

Luckily the car is still useable as the damage was on the far left hand side of the screen and didn't impair my road vision. Just as well with a two hour drive (accident on the M25) to viait my mother today.

Jacqui.c - hot, weary, slightly pissed after one glass of wine and wishing for some rain to cool things down!

Now you know why I sold up my house in the south and moved north. So many people down there seem to think that if they spend more than 60 seconds a week below 40 mph their car will be confiscated for driving slowly.
Sorry to hear about your probs, and glad you're getting things sorted.
We did enjoy your visit to sunny Scotland, it was nice to see you both again.
Should be OK for the return match in November, as I am having my other hip done in 3 months.

And Kendall won't drive in the vicinity of Boston, NYC, New Haven, etc. That's how he and I became such good friends. I do the city driving.

Puppy went tht dog park today. We can't win. The first sunny day in weeks and it was too damn hot for him or any of the other dogs to run. Still, he enjoyed the outing.

We got RAIN last night! (I knew that leaving the washing out to dry would do it!) Right now it is cool and very pleasant here although how long that continues is another thing. Ah well, enjoy it while it's here.

The windscreen should be fixed this afternoon so that will be out the way before we drive to Duxford tomorrow to see a Spitfire.

This afternoon I will be starting to show my step-granddaughter how to crochet - picked up yarn and a book in the local charity shop today. I also got some lovely mohair yarn that might just become an auction shawl in due course.

You can see more than a spitfire at Duxsford.
There is a large USAF museum there, and a memorial with a representation of every lost US aircraft in WW2

Well, they've set off safely for their temporary home after their visit with us in Surrey. A lovely evening, so glad they could spare some of their time here, but they must both be pretty shattered after 3 weeks of travelling all over the place. Good to spend time with them, safe journeys both!!

I remember my first trip to England and Scotland in 1989. It was in May and there was an unbelievable heatwave going on. It was in the mid to high 90's the entire 3 weeks. I was absolutely miserable. No AC and few fans. It was just awful. Jacqui and Kendall it was like Old Songs last year the whole time. Miserable. Also, my last trip in 2004 I went into London with Noreen and Stewart and their 3 oldest children. We drove most of the way and then took the Tube. Noreen and I went to the Cecil Sharp House and Stewart and the kids went off to do some sightseeing. We met back at the car at the end of the day and drove home. It was so easy. I recommend it in the future. We'll be glad to get you back in the US and will see you at Old Songs in a week and a half. Hi, Noreen.

Getting into East London would have been a breeze if I had taken my usual route but Kendall wanted to go see Marx's tomb and have a photo taken for a Republican friend's benefit and that was where the trouble started. Kendall has not been a great fan of the undeground on previous occasions so I thought that road might be better.

Very few street signs easily visible and too much traffic to be able to slow down and look without causing major problems. We gave up in the end and I reckoned that the easiest way through to Plaistow was A1 into the City and then out on the A13. Hold up at the Angel, due to too much raffic, then I managed to get us onto the A12 and had to go out and around the North Circ, where there were more holdups due to road works!

Anyway, to add insult to injury, the guy came to fit the windscreen yesterday and, just as he had taken the wipers off preparatory to popping the screen, the heavens opened! So we still have a cracked screen, which the guy says is safe enough for driving, and my son has to reschedule for when we leave tomorrow.

We were going to Duxford today but Kendall has decided that he isn't really up for that. I, at least, will be in Hertford tonight and will hopefully have Kendall with me, after a lazy day in Shepperton.

Maine does have its countryside and poo smells for a fact and if that is preferable to Kendall, than he's in the right place! Ever seen a Maine barn being cleaned out in the Springtime? I did. Up until that point the phrase "asshole deep" had no real meaning to me but after seeing that.......................Simply unbelievable (much like Kendall).

We're off back to Maine in a few hours, bags all packed ready.

We had a great time at the Hertford Club last night with all the regulars and with Moses and Singing Referee also in attendance. There was some great music and a wonderful energy in the room and it was worth the journey from and to Shepperton to be there. A real high point to finish our visit.

I think that London is one hell of a culture shock for Kendall - I find it all a bit much now and I'm London born and bred. For myself, I wouldn't move back into London now and have felt that way for a number of years. However, it will not stop me making forays into the Smoke to visit my friends. Come out to Maine and you can see what Kendall means though.

We got back home last night at just before midnight after experiiencing the delights of the Airport From Hell AKA Newark.

After an eight hour flight across the Pond (with the best attention from the cabin crew) we got all our bags through customs, only to be told by an airport employee that to re-check the bags we had to get them across to Terminal C - on the Airtrain. Withn three large bags and three cabin bags this was not the easiest of tasks and when we got the C it was not clear where to take the bags. This was when we came up against two separate airport staff who thought that Portland Maine meant we neede an international flight!

We finally found the right floor, had the bags re-checked in but told we would have to take them to the other end of that floor for x-ray in area one. There was no area one and that is where I lost it a bit with the Continental staff and insisted that someone actually took us to the correct area. Turned out it USED to be area one but was now area two!

We settled at the gate to await the plane, having got something to sit and eat at the gate instead of eating at our leisure at one of the restaurants. Just getting into the food when a gate change was announced - right the other end of the floor! We got down there, it was noisy and crowded but we got on the plane on time - and then sat there for about forty minutes with no explanation as to why we weren't moving. Kendall, at that point commented that "next time we go to England we'll drive" which raised a laugh from other passengers near us.

The only saving grace was that all our bags actually got to Portland as well and Mary was there to meet and take us home. I turned the light off at 1.00am and woke up, as did Kendall, at 6.00am - still on UK time.

Whatever the problem with travel we had a great time and thanks go out to all those who gave us a bed or a meal or just the pleasure of their company for a few hours. There are so many lovely friends that we want to keep in touch with but just can't manage to visit in the time we have. Still, there will be other visits in the future although I think it will be a while before Kendall comes over again - he misses his home comforts to much!
