toomeray, toomeray tomeray

Sally said Tom whip-a wham, whip-a-wham

down to the field, whip-a whield
to watch your wheat grow, whip-a -whoh
toomeray, toomeray tomeray

< instrumental >

Hey all, with help from above sources, I searched his name and found the song!! His name is actually Billy Chernoff.

This is the old "staticy" radio version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXCji___3tw

This is a better quality version, but his voice is a little different since it was done later on I guess:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p8wOTpye0Y&feature=related

What is amazing is that he actually commented on the second video link and said some truly awesomely inspiring words...

This was supposed to be a true story, and life has such things as rotten teeth and snakes.
It has been said that this is the first folk song to be composed in America.

Well, Kendall, I was intrigued for a while, because the tune for Springfield Mountain seems to be a sprightly old dance tune, perhaps German or Czech. If you are familiar with the Mozart dance known as 'Michael Turner's Waltz,' you will hear the similarity.

However, none of the MIDI's I found seemed complete. No B part, and the A part is awful short.

As for the words, suffice it to say I don't enjoy visualizing snakebite and rotten teeth.

I wish I could find the original dance without having to hear the lyrics.

It's in Burl Ives song book.Published in 1953.Written in 1761 about the death of one Timothy Myrick of Farmington Massachusetts.

On Springfield Mountain there did dwell,
A lovely youth I knowed him well
chorus:
Ray goo too day noo way ray today noo way to be day ree nee to be noo.

2 He scarce had mowed half round the field, when an ugly serpint bit his heel
rep. chorus

3 They took him home to Molly dear, which made her feel so very queer...

chorus

4 Now Molly had two ruby lips, with which the pizen she did sip

rep. chorus

5 Now molly had a rotten tooth, and so the pizen killed them both...
chorus.

Sorry about the type-os. It's "Read," NOT "Rad." and the record
is a "45rpm," NOT a "35rpm."

Other than that- the rest stands.........

I was a radio disc-jockey from 1968-1995. I believe the lyric is
"weed," and NOT "wheat." Also- Tommy says "When my GRASS gets "right,"
(or "ripe") refers to cannabis and NOT "wheat."

I also believe the "snake" biting Tommy's "heel" means the DEA nailed
him.

That's why "Tommy did die..."

I LOVE this song, and am glad to rad others like it. I still play the original .35rpm disc at home- it's the one I took from the radio station
I worked at where I had played it.

I am also looking for this song. It was played on CFGM in Toronto I belive back in the 70's. From what I remember is was sung by Billy Charm or Charn, but I have not been able to locate an artist by this name.

I believe the lyric's were

Tommy went wah cu-ko wah cu-ko wah
Down to the Field Cuk-o we cu-ko we
To watch his weed grow Cu ko whoa cu-ko whoa
When a snake bit his heel cu-ko whoa

Everybody seems to have a slightly different version, but this is how I remembered it. Would love to get an mp3 of this.

Billy Charm had that out as a 45 record in the seventies....My mother took us over to meet him when he came through town. That was in NM.
He was doing some kind of promo.....
We saved the autgraph for many years.....it was erased by time.
I googled Billy Charm with no hits....I dont know if he was "big" or not but I remember hearing him on the radio and it was a big deal to meet him......

Well, I have to say I haven't found a recording. I don't think the song has ever been known as "Toomeray" - the most common title is "Springfield Mountain." Woody Guthrie sings it on Woody Guthrie Sings Folk Songs - but he ends verses with "roo-di-roo-di-ray." So, I'd say it's the same song, even though it apparently doesn't contain the magic word, "toomeray."

Tommy went a-walk boo boo walk boo boo walkin'
