They are both the same dog, only the leg lengths are different; and the stair climbing abilities.

Never kept a Dachshund but we did have a Weimaraner.

Thorin was a great dog but he was not very bright. He would watch as one of us got in to a car. When you we in it (and perhaps he could not scent you) he considered that you had just left the planet completely.

If you drove a short distance and then got out - he would stay where he was until he saw you out of the car again, then he would run and make a fuss as if you have been gone forever. He never did twig how this this trick was done.

The Weimaraner is a sporting dog with endurance, and fair speed. The Dachshund is good in thick brush hunting.
What type of hunting do you want to do?
My knowledge is second-hand; I know people who have worked them but I am not a hunter myself. When we had a little farm in a half-settled area we had two Irish setters; they has plenty of exercise.

Having them as pets only seems wrong to me unless you can take them out and exercise them strenuously.

Weimaraners were bred to be a pointer & a retriever one of the few that have both qualities. Smart, huummm? When I let the girl out & she's wrapped her lease around the wall or a tree or a post I'll wave my arm in a circular motion & she knows to go around & untangle herself & come in. They do like to run about & have plenty of energy to spend, which fits right in with my family of ADHD & high needs people. As a pup she ate though 2 couches though, right down to the wood, get them something to chew on. She was great too for minding the kids & watching out for strangers & not nipping at friends.

Dachshunds seem to fall into roughly 4 categories:

1. The worrier: he frets, he agonizes, he worries about a great many things. In short, he is paraniod and high strung. Highly suspicious of strangers, he may nip on occasion, but is more likely to simply do a whole lot of barking at anyone he doesn't already know well. The barking may go on for a very long time. Once he's said everything he wants to say about how worried he is about you, he will subside, keeping a close eye however on your every move from a safe distance. If you do anything that aroused his suspicions further, he will resume barking loudly.

2. The party dog: Everybody's pal, this dog is gregarious and sociable. He will also bark when you first arrive, because that's his job, but you can tell by his wagging tail and enthusiastic panting that he is longing to make new friends. Like all dachshunds he is on an endless quest for FOOD and MORE FOOD, and will do anything he can think of to get you to give him some. He will also steal food and is always looking for a chance to do so. Stolen food tastes better than one's own food. All dachshunds agree on that.

3. the noble warrior: relatively rare now, this is the traditional hunting dachshund, and he is a very determined dog. He lives to hound small, furry animals to their doom, and is extremely adept at tracking down and killing rodents large and small...and sometimes even domestic cats, if they are inexperienced. He knows no fear and will take on any challenge. He is almost impervious to pain when his adrenalin is flowing, and once he gets hold of something it is as good as dead. He makes a very loyal and loving family member, and is a good watchdog. The noble warrior dachshund is a very tough customer, not to be trifled with, as some burglars have discovered to their regret.

4. the slob: an offshoot of the party dog, the slob rapidly becomes seriously overweight and spends most of his time sleeping and the remainder begging for FOOD. The slob is downright religious about food, and will do anything to get it...except work. The slob, curiously enough, may also be a "worrier", but his worrying won't keep him from getting at least 22 hours of sleep a day. He will have paraniod dreams while he sleeps, and will fret about other matters while he is awake. You can see he's worrying, because his eye bumps keep popping up and down like Dr McCoy on the old Star Trek show. The slob is often afflicted with serious back problems later in life, and may require the fitting of a wheel to support his midsection...or failing that...a full time person on staff to carry him about from one place to another.

Which of these types you, the dachshund owner, ends up with is basically the luck of the draw.

I remember #2 (party dog) very well. A friend had one. I sat on a couch, quaffing the brew, with the devil curled at my feet. Later (much later) when I rose to bid farewell, I found that he had quietly chewed the cuff to my suit pants, cutting it almost halfway off.
No dachs for me- I have an urge to kick every one I see.

The cuff chewing trick is an old one, and it indicates affection. That dog definitely liked you, and he wanted to keep a memento of your visit. The peculiarly stealthy technique of removing pants cuffs with no one noticing is a specialty of the party dog.

I have had good relations with several daschhunds. There's Miss Jackie, for instance, who will woo you with her big eyes. And Huey, who will bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark until you're ready to go nuts, and then he'll get over it and come cuddle with you. And then there was Corny -- Cornelius -- who wanted to play ball. He wanted to play ball morning, noon, night, and all the time in between. He was a loving dog, and before he died he let himself be used by Purdue Vet School as a test for medicines for other dachshunds. Then there's Max, who lives next door with the people who stole my fence -- he's the best one in the house.

That's a heck of a choice. Do you want a little dog to trip over or a big one to trip over you?

Little Hawk--you left out a category. I don't know what it's called but it's the one where they will maul anything that gets in their way--pant legs, leashes, veterinary technicians, owners. Maybe it's a Little Warrior with too much inbreeding?

Oh. Sorry!

That's...

5. The psycho: a pathologically paranoid and aggressive little monster, this dachshund trusts no one and he knows they're all out to get him, so his plan is to get them first. He is short-tempered, hysterical, and vicious. There is usually one person, and only one, whom he will allow to get near him or handle him, because he is aware that he needs some human backup. He is sneaky, fast, and will bite at the slightest provocation. Being a sort of twisted version of the Worrier, with a slight trace of the noble warrior, this dachshund is the worst deal in a weiner dog that you can possibly get.

My older brother had a Weimaraner once and it was so smart it was almost creepy. I suspect Bro spent much time training the thing, but it had to be smart on its own to deliver my newspapers when it came for a visit, and never needed a leash. Bro has never had another dog.

I like smart dogs, but they have to be good companions too. I've said it before that Rosie The Wonder Dog (Springer/Collie/Coyote) has always sensed when there's been a death in the family. She seems to mourn with us, comfort us, be absolutely well behaved when we need her most, then thank us for the privilege.

Whichever you get, spend a lot of time training it as a puppy and it will reward you the rest of its life.

Peace, Mooh.

Sham...Good point. Rosie spent several 6 hour days in the van a couple of years ago, with no room to move, limited air conditioning, but seemed to enjoy the reward of a new place to camp every night or two. No complaints. When there's something exciting at the end of the ride once in a while, most dogs will ride happily.

Peace, Mooh.

I've never met a Weimaraner with any sense at all, but then they're fashionable now so a lot of people own them who shouldn't. I'm sure they're OK if you understand how BIG they can get and how much exercise they need (hello . . . hunting dog).

Naah, get a Rottie. Now there's a real dog. Big enough so you don't have to stand on your head when you pet it. Not given to frantic barking. Friendly and tolerant of people...and excellent at reminding young punks that they are actually good kids under all that bluster. And if they don't remember....they'll regret it:-)

Stupidest dog I ever met was an Irish Setter. Beautiful, but stupid. Maybe most dogs bred for hunting are, compared with dogs bred for working stock.

Excuse me, more wisdom from the peanut gallery, Rosie The Wonder Dog wishes to speak:

bhumm   , ...............uk\0
+23

Cosmo The Other Dog has to interrupt:

qwwwwwwwwwww.=o00.

Translated, "What's with Dachshund and Weimaraner? Fido, Rex, Lassie, Jack, George are better dog names. Why don't you ask the dog?"

I tried telling them those are breed names, but they don't listen well when they're licking themselves.

Dog drool on the keyboard is a nice touch. Cosmo at least used a period this time.

Peace, Mooh.
