...and good on 'em.

http://winnipegsun.com/News/Winnipeg/2006/07/08/1674066-sun.html

The Mounties, "also recovered more than 100 machine-guns, assault rifles, handguns and silencers worth more than $300,000 on the black market."

I'm glad they're focussed on criminals rather than terrorists.

Hmmm. Makes you wonder if they were Middle Eastern immigrants, what they would have been charged with.

My guess is that there are far more gang related crimes than terrorist related activities and that is exactly where we should be focussing the resources of our law enforcement.

Nice to know those weapons are off the streets.

how do you know they were not terrorists of one sort?
(criminal vs terrorist)
sounds like the making of terror by the sound of what they found.

do you mean that the perpertrators were from within the borders
of the country rather than from outside? (in this case Canada)

crime is terrible
and terror is criminal...

Excerpt:

Two men arrested just outside Winnipeg last winter with 27 machine-guns in their vehicle are allegedly part of a huge B.C.-based gun and drug trafficking ring connected to organized crime.

B.C. Mounties announced yesterday that -- with the help of several other police forces, the Canadian military and American federal agents -- they have arrested 10 people, seized more than 85 pounds of marijuana, as well as substantial amounts of cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs.

They've also recovered more than 100 machine-guns, assault rifles, handguns and silencers worth more than $300,000 on the black market.

"These guns were all going to end up in the hands of organized criminals involved in the drug trade," said B.C. RCMP Cpl. Tom Seaman, who noted there has been no direct link made between the alleged trafficking ring and "traditional" organized crime groups like bikers or the mafia.

open mike - I think the arrests were all made in Canada but that the weapons were smuggled in from the U.S.

This scenario has me thinking. If we were to target the arms trade (legal and illegal) we would not have so many terrorists or criminals. Seems to me that the ability to carry out assault with a deadly weapon would be severely curtailed.

Lets face it. Most weapons (including bombs and missles) are bought and sold. Arms dealers are making huge sums of money from the misery of others. Why isn't this market scrutinized more closely?

Hats off to the RCMP for busting these people. For once, it seems, they have their priorities straight. I would much rather see my tax dollars going to end this type of crime than busting "mom and pop grow-ops" or arresting people for the medical use of marijuana.

"Why isn't this market scrutinized more closely? "

Well dianavan ... you answered this question already in your post .."Arms dealers are making huge sums of money" ... a portion of this huge sum of money is used to pay off the ones who have the power to scrutunize. As revolting as it is .... and unfortunately, there are people in power who have no morals and capitalize on this kind of business.

I had a very interesting conversation a while ago with a retired RCMP officer (of a very high rank) ... he had some disturbing things to say why big drug lords (not the mom and pop shops)get away ... it's basically a hopeless situation .... money can buy you virtually anything.

Bruce O - Canadian troops are already doing your dirty work in Afghanistan. We'll probably have to go into Iraq and help clean up the mess after the U.S. leaves, too. Seems thats the way it goes. The U.S. creates the problem and then we have to fix it.

Clinton: after the poof the drug lords would not be gone. They woould still be rich, because you couldn`t "tax the hell outa it". If drugs would be legal any tax significantly higher than taxes on alcohol and tobacco would be considered discriminating by the courts.

Ernest, Canada already taxes the hell out of alcohol and particularly tobacco. A tax on marijuana at the same rate as tobacco could produce significant government revenues; no need for a different rate.

Bruce O: poor memory? Let me refresh it for you. Canada refused to join the "Coalition of the Willing" because this country preferred to be part of a UN-sanctioned operation (as we were in the Gulf War). Besides, you have the military to do the job, so do it and quit whining about it all. Your snot-nosed comment about my country is just that. Bugger off.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again, divert your course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert your course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet! We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers, and numerous support vessels. I demand that you change your course fifteen degrees north, that's one-five degrees north, or counter-measures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship!

Canadians: We are a lighthouse. Your call."

Bruce Olson, a member of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, has used the name "Bruce O" at Mudcat for several years. I contacted Bruce, and he said he's not the Bruce who posted this message as "Bruce 0" - since the name is so close to the name of a known personality here, it could be misleading. I would think that almost anybody who had any criminal intent in Winnipeg had little trouble last night.

Last year, when my daughter's band was on tour, they stayed in one of Winnipeg's "finer" hotels one night, only to have the side window of their van smashed in under the "watchful" eye of the hotel's camera in the parking area.

Fortunately, athough someone bled profusely inside the van, nothing of any particular value was nicked, as their band equipment was under a plywood cover and only accessible by crowbar through the rear doors, if one didn't know the trick of opening their faulty rear latch. To their credit, the hotel did supply them with a cloth to mop up the blood.

They don't care much for Winnipeg.

Nobody outside the military and, possibly, the police need machine guns and such weapons. (And if you're concerned about an invasion or actions by your own government you should learn how to obtain a machine gun or anything else from those who have 'em.)

It's not anti-American to be pro-Canadian.

Not sure if legalisation would stop the drug barons. People are making millions out of trafficing 'Black Market' cigarettes and booze into the UK, usualy from eastern Europe. The only way to stop people supplying anything is to stop the demand. How do we do that? If I knew the answer to that one think I would be wasting my time here?

"People are making millions out of trafficing 'Black Market' cigarettes and booze into the UK"

That's probably more a "tax" or "Import Restriction" issue....

But I promise you, the money they're making isn't a drop in the bucket to what the Drug Lords are making

"stop the demand. How do we do that?"
We don't... it's impossible

I'm sure you're right, Clinton. I may be an oddity (no comments please!) but if I see something on sale from 'a bloke in a pub' for half the price it usualy is I question it's origins. As long as people want to buy illegal goods others will make money out of them:-(

As you say, stopping the demand is impossible, hence my earlier comment, so perhaps the best we can hope for is a restriction of supply? If that is done by outlawing the goods or taxing them is perhaps a more apt question. Trouble is that whichever way you do it the more unscupulous will make money one way or another.

How do we get round ity then? Giving everything away free? Everyone working just for the love of it and getting what they need from the communal pot? Tressells 'Ragged trousered philanthropists' goes a long way to explaining that kind of Eutopia. Explodes it all in the end though with one simple argument. Human greed will always win out.

Ah, well. Better get myself a bottle of MacRuskkies genuine Scottish Whiskie, a big splif and forget all my worries...

As long as people want things there will be those who are willing to supply those things, legal or otherwise.

Canada has spent big bucks on a gun registry--all the 'honest' folks have registered their guns. I wonder how many of the guns that were confiscated by police in the arrests were 'registered' guns?

That's another one that gets me as well, Peace. Handguns are outlawed altogether here in the UK. So who has them? Criminals of course. Gives them a bit of an unfair advantage don't you think? Again no answers from me again but it does seem that those who are willing to flout the law will, literealy, get away with murder. Those who uphold the law are denied the means with which to defend themselves. Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the gun ban, but until it can be enforced it is futile.

Cheers

Fact. A few years ago, Florida was gripped in a crime wave. Then, they passed a "Right to carry" law, and withing a short time the crime rate dropped drastically. In my own state of Maine, there are 10,000 permits to carry concealed out there in a state with only a million people including babies. Vermont has no law at all on carrying concealed, yet it is the safest place in the union to live.
Looks like a case of emotion and facts not jibbing.

Idaho doesn't do too badly either, Kendall. My "carry permit" is almost never used, but I have it. Let me rush to say that I don't feel that everyone who asks should be issued one; background checks and training are sine qua nons in my opinion, as are restricted zones (no guns in hospitals, schools, bars, courtrooms, and so forth).

Of course, as someone pointed out when I was working in Kentucky and we were debating a ban on concealed weapons in the library, how will you know if someone is carrying a concealed weapon into the building? We couldn't afford metal detectors and security guards and the staff sure wasn't trained in police work.

(I'm also a special reserve police officer, who can be called out in case of riot or insurrection or declared civil emergency. But as the Chief of Police said to me, he's more likely to call out the streets department than the library director.)

These permits are not handed out like candy at Halloween. You must pass a strict background check first.

No, they certainly are not. In Kentucky I had to take 16 or so hours of classroom instruction on the legality of lethal force (same as the cops) and two hours of range instruction and then demonstrate my knowledge and proficiency in firearms use. Idaho also required such instruction and demonstration, but Kentucky qualified and so I didn't have to repeat the classes.

In all cases (Indiana, Kentucky, Idaho) I was fingerprinted and run through the National Crime Computer system. ANY downcheck, including DUI or domestic violence and I would not have gotten a permit.

I have friends who carry guns. Most of them are police officers. I tend to think of guns as tools rather than weapons. Despite a familiarity with a few hand guns, I'm certainly not good enough with them ever to want to carry one, concealed or otherwise.

The Gun Registry here is a white-elephant money grab by Ottawa. It is clumsy, ineffective and bloody expensive. It's a program that was supposed to pay for itself in two years. Yeah. Right. Like, I have this bridge to sell . . . . I'll tell you guys, for all the problems y'all have with your federal government in the USA, I think Canada could teach you a thing or two about ineptitude. These folks could screw up a one-car funeral.

Anyway, rant over.

To carry a lethal weapon of any sort is to assume a tremondous load of responsibility and should never be undertaken lightly or in anger. To know that you have in your control the means to end or ruin another's life is (or should be) awe-inspiring. And the worst reason to pack a weapon is because it makes you feel eight feet tall and covered with hair.

Man, did you hit that nail on the head. Not only do you have the burden of being responsible for the life of another person, you also have the burden of keeping yourself out of prison if you are wrong.

You betcha! There was a Bigfoot conference here just a few weeks ago and all the PhDs and researchers were in complete agreement that Bigfoots are armed with a right and a left. Just two, though.
