Any live music on in this area at this time?! Anyone give me any folk club websites or details of acoustic nights etc?
Am hoping to visit the area and would like to enjoy some live music while we are there. Can't fit my accordion in hand luggage, sob! Anyone know any pubs in the area with a piano, or a friendly accordion owner who would let me fulfil a dream of playing just a couple of tunes songs in Ireland, on our first visit there?

The pub that Captain birdseye is talking about is "An Teach Beag" (The Small House), it's behind (and belongs to) O'Donovan's Hotel. As well as having traditional music each night in "An Teach Beag" , there is also a session on Tuesday evenings in the main bar of the hotel. We've visited there for the past 4 years (and will be there again at the beginning of August), and have always been made very welcome and invited to take part at both venues.

Rockhen, there is an accordion player who plays at An Teach Beag but I'm not sure of which evening, and I think that Shanley's Bar has a piano.

I've added a couple of links for you.

Have a great time.

De Barra's pub is a fantastic venue for music. Christy Moore's nephew Gavin is a regular (and works there i think). Not all folk but a mixture of folk/rock/blues &c. Atmosphere and ale is grand too. Roy Harper and Nick are doing three gigs there this month as last year which was fab!

Also just the place for White and Black Puddings!

Happened to be in Clonakilty some time ago, and it just happened to be Andy Irvine at De Barra! I was made up!

Also had good night in An Teach Beag on another occasion. And the best Guinness ever in another Clonakilty pub (it should have been Murphy's in Cork, I know).

Have a great time!

DeBarra's trad night is Monday. I'm sure you've already linked to their website - August may not be posted yet, but Mondays will be the same. An Teach Beag is right around the corner; I believe the pub in between the two will have trad music for you as well this time of year. Haven't yet been to Ballydehob, but just got back from Skibbereen the other day - a couple of places there, as well, if you want to explore a bit. Dude, you're in West Cork - you'll be fine!

Thanks everyone, look to be some great places to hear live music. Hope to maybe find the accordion player at An Teach Beag and just persuade him or her to let me just play one tune so i can say I have joined in just a little! Will be a great experience by the look of it!
Thanks for info, any other info on the area, other music places etc, will be gratefully received! This is one of mudcat's strengths, isn't it?! Fantastic!

I envy you your trip to this wonderful part of the world. There is a pub called the Irish Whip in Ballydehob that used to do a wide variety of music, ranging from rock bands to sessions to jazz and all points in between. For me though, the best place for live music and sessions is Schull, a little fishing/cheesemaking town on the way to the Mizen Head. About nine pubs, four or five of which will have music on any given night at that time of the year. Various tastes catered for, from 'tourist' to 'committed folkie'. Take your pick! Last time I was there I didn't have my instruments, but I was lent a guitar and mandolin for the week by a guy I met in a session. Also; try to get out to Crookhaven and Barley Cove (again out towards the Mizen Head). Crookhaven is a small harbour, from where Marconi sent the first signal across the Atlantic. For lunch try the Fish Chowder at Sullivans Bar, then see if you can talk Mrs Sullivan into giving you the recipe! (For an evening meal, try the Breton-run fish restaurant next door; even Mrs Sullivan thinks the chef there is awesome!)
Barley Cove is a beautiful, usually deserted beach, with tall cliffs and Atlantic rollers.
Have a great time
Tim

Refresh... just checking whether anyone else has any further useful info about the area, music wise and general 'what's worth visiting/not worth going to'. Will print off the above and take it with us.
Thanks again for the above info, folks.

Thanks to all who posted info on this thread. It was really helpful and greatly appreciated. Had a brilliant time and although we saw just a small part of Ireland, we loved what we saw and intend to go back again. Met some lovely musicians in Clonakilty.

Particular thanks to Rosie who used the music grapevine to persuade 'fiddler' Dan, to lend me an accordion for a session. All those extra buttons on a 120, luxury after my 48 bass! Thanks Dan!
I found the musicians at the session very welcoming and encouraging. They gave me the opportunity to play a couple of my own tunes, too which was lovely, for me, (even if not necessarily for everyone else, lol!)

Captain Birdseye...We went to Ballydehob, but unfortunately, not on the right night for the sessions you mentioned. We did keep a look out for you....we are probably totally wrong in what we think you look like as I'm afraid to say the Birdseye fishfinger advert swayed us, :-) Thanks for all your info, anyway!

Pity you can't bring your accordeon.
I believe if you carefully place it in an upturned bodhran and gently place it in the sea it will eventually arrive in Ireland

Will bear that in mind, next time we go! Save a fortune on excess baggage costs! :-)
My little accordion is very inoffensive though, it plays very gently whenever required! :-)

NB Yes... the words 'accordion' and 'gently' DO appear in the same sentence, here and it is not a misprint, lol!

Very 'chilled'! Can't wait to go back to Ireland again and see a little more of it.
The people we met were lovely, the places were beautiful and it was nicer, and drier weather than at home for the fortnight we were there. Can't be bad! Never wore my wellies, once!
