Subject: Concertina in Pirates of the Caribbean

I've just come back from accompanying the offspring to the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film. In a pub scene a character is waving an anglo concertina around but the sound from it is only slightly better coordinated with the visuals than Bing Crosby's effort in High Society, in that it at least sounds like a concertina (rather than a 140bass piano accordion).

What I'd like to know is the name of the tune. For some reason I got "Music for a found harmonium" in my head and now can't get it out. Can anyone release me from this cage?

If you knew who was playing, that'd be nice to know too.

Can't help you,-haven't seen it,- but do they have a motor-car, too?

One good anachronism deserves another.

Haven't seen this film but there's a rather bizarre CD to go with it involving a whole load of unlikely people:

Track list for "Rogue's Gallery":

Disc one:
"Cape Cod Girls," Baby Gramps
"Mingulay Boat Song," Richard Thompson
"My Son John," John C. Reilly
"Fire Down Below," Nick Cave
"Turkish Revelry," Loudon Wainwright III
"Bully In The Alley," Three Pruned Men
"The Cruel Ship's Captain," Bryan Ferry
"Dead Horse," Robin Holcomb
"Spanish Ladies," Bill Frisell
"High Barbary," Joseph Arthur
"Haul Away Joe," Mark Anthony Thompson
"Dan Dan," David Thomas
"Blood Red Roses," Sting
"Sally Brown," Teddy Thompson
"Lowlands Away," Rufus Wainwright & Kate McGarrigle
"Baltimore Whores," Gavin Friday
"Rolling Sea," Eliza Carthy
"The Mermaid," Martin Carthy & the UK Group
"Haul On The Bowline," Bob Neuwirth
"Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Bono
"Bonnie Portmore," Lucinda Williams
"Shenandoah," Richard Greene & Jack Sh*t
"The Cry Of Man," Mary Margaret O'Hara

Disc two:
"Boney," Jack Sh*t
"Good Ship Venus," Loudon Wainwright III
"Long Time Ago," White Magic
"Pinery Boy," Nick Cave
"Lowlands Low," Bryan Ferry with Antony
"One Spring Morning," Akron/Family
"Hog Eye Man," Martin Carthy & family
"The Fiddler/A Drop of Nelson's Blood," Ricky Jay & Richard Greene
"Caroline and Her Young Sailor Bold," Andrea Corr
"Fathom The Bowl," John C. Reilly
"Drunken Sailor," David Thomas
"Farewell Nancy," Ed Harcourt
"Hanging Johnny," Stan Ridgway
"Old Man of The Sea," Baby Gramps
"Greenland Whale Fisheries," Van Dyke Parks
"Shallow Brown," Sting
"The Grey Funnel Line," Jolie Holland
"A Drop of Nelson's Blood," Jarvis Cocker
"Leave Her Johnny," Lou Reed
"Little Boy Billy," Ralph Steadman

Music For A Found Harmonium is probably the most irritating tune ever written so if you've got a worm in your head, it's a likely candidate. Those Penguins really should be caged . . .

Thanks John. Your link was informative in that it gave a name (Two Hornpipes (Tortuga)) in which another link specified that the jig was composed by Hans Zimmer. Countess richard's list is impressive but leaves open the question of how the songs & tunes are 'specifically' relevant to the soundtrack; worth getting just for the compilation. Was 'The Young Tin Whistle Pest' the first to use the term "maggot" for a tune that just went endlessly round?

Concertina players are used to being anachronistic as well as portrayed that way. Sigh!

The Rogue's Gallery project mentioned by Countess Richard is not specifically relevant to the soundtrack, but to the film as a whole. It was conceived by director Gore Verbinsky as a cool idea and a marketing tie-in to the film, but delayed in production...so it will be out in August. Read more about it here:

Off-topic but perhaps of interest to some, I have read that Keith Richards was going to do a cameo appearence as Jack Sparrow's dad in 'Dead Man's Chest', but was tied up with the band. Apparently Johnny Depp has said that he based Jack Sparrow on Keef.

He may pop up in the next one... Barbossa has to get a crew from somewhere... we've had the undead, the extended life/mutated so the next step must surely be the nearly dead.

Keith Richard's potential role was mentioned on the TV news over here (UK) the other night.

As someone said on another thread, Hollywood never let the facts get in the way of a good storyline. The same could be said for props and artifacts.

Well I've just listened to the first CD of the Rogue's Gallery set. What a weird set of recordings. Some excellent performances from people called Wainwright, Thompson and Carthy and some complete abortions too from people who have perhaps never sung before or played (or tuned an instrument). I should have been warned by that wayward apostrophe in the title - this CD set has been produced by greengrocers.

I don't know when I'll get around to the other CD. Anybody else bought this? What do you think?

No, it was probably John Playford in The English Dancing Master pub. 1651.

Most of Pirates III is already in the can. They made II and
III together. And yes, they've already said that Keith Richards
shows up as Sparrow's father.

I, too have recently bought, "Rogue's Gallery". To date, I have only listened to a few. Surreal - shanties, Jim, but not as we know them!

I think I'm disappointed by the fact that they've obviously had buckets of money available for this project, they've signed up some great musicians and then they've added some totally inappropriate ones. In the sleevenotes they boast how quickly some of the tracks were recorded. Do they think we can't tell? Who is that Mary Margaret O'Hara? She sounds like a human theremin! And Lucinda Williams, whose work I love usually. Did she just run into the studio? She sounds like she can't sing three words without breathing again. There's great stuff here, but it could have been so much better.

Thanks, Countess Richard for the info about the maggot in Playford. Sorry I didn't respond before but the thread didn't reappear to me until today.

I don't know if anyone cares about the original question, but I have heard that local San Francisco shantyman Skip Henderson did the concertina bit for the tavern scene. I've also heard that his song, "Billy Bones" was originally slated to be included in the first Pirates movie (the bonfire on the island scene), but that the powers that be at Disney decided to plug their own music instead.

Can anyone confirm or deny these rumors? Chantyranger?

I have heard the same story, and last year Skip was complaining about some sort of settlement he was negotiating with Disney. His name does appear at the very end of the credits, but it went by so quickly I couldn't really see what they were crediting him with.

And BTW, was anyone else bugged that a concertina was featured in a movie that appears to take place in the 18th century. I know Disney is not the source for historical accuracy, but jeez. . . So when Keith Richards shows up in Pirates II will he be playing his vintage 1780's telecaster?

"Scupper me slangplaks and let go the bilge - yee must be a rich tar."

I wish! As you are probably aware, parents have only limited influence over the activities of their offspring, and even less influence over their taste.

And, despite rumours to the contrary, I value 'some' peace.

If Dog Rose Morris can make it to Canberra for next year's National, I'd be happy to get rid of the rust and play you a tune or two; it's been a while since I played for Morris in Darwin and even longer since I played for Morris in Melbourne. Is two sides enough for you?

Cheers, Rowan

Having seen another thread I now see the relevance of Guest's question about offspring and being a one-side lubber. Sigh! Life is so simple in the Antipodes.

But the offer (of a tune or two) still stands.
