All those maps I had to draw and label in grade school must have had some function. That was shameful.

Jay Leno is always doing things like that on his show; it's called "Jaywalking." Sometimes it's hard to tell if they are all set-up or for real. That said, if our admin. is as dumb as those examples, I'd say Australia'd better watch out!

I loved geography and map-drawing in school, too.

The Idaho Legion has already purchased wombat masks so they'll be camouflaged when the US invades Australia, home of terrorists who are planning to cut off our supply of Foster's.

My major problem with geography is that most of the countries on the map now didn't exist when I was a schoolkid. Several that did exist have new names now, and some of those "nominally the same" have had borders rearranged to make room for the new ones.

Why, some of those folks couldn't tell Schleswig-Holstein from The Orange Free State!

Appalling, I tell you!

I sometimes think that all that stamp collecting I did as a kid taught me quite a bit about geography and history - not only where some of these countries are (were?) but also about particular national heroes such as Bernardo O'Higgins or Eva Peron or Dr Sun Yet San.

I love Jaywalking but it's one of those train-wreck things; it's mortifying, but you can't stop watching. A shocking number of interviewees are teachers and students.

At least I know Australia when I see it. Holy cow. I must confess I'm not entirely clear on the exact locations of a lot of the post-USSR countries (sorry, but I have yet to need this information in my day-to-day life) but I can get the right general area.

John, if it makes you feel better, half the countries on that map didn't exist when ANY of us were school kids.

Like jacqui c, I'd at least get somewhere in the right region.

I'm not sure whether to believe this clip as showing genuine ignorance or not though.

Well . . . that certainly explains a lot.

What in the hell are they teaching in school these days?

Les from Hull, stamps were wonderful for geographical study, but so many of mine are SO out-date, like what JohninKS said about what he learned in school.:-) I still love the stamps; they're beautiful!

Yahooligans (yahoo for kids) has a game called "where in the world is" which divies up the world map by sections & you get chances to find the country before it shows you where it is. At the least, one might be able to understand such concepts as Europe, Asia, etc.
