PG, that is easily fixed- if Americans would like to be more in evidence they/we need to post more.

I like reading threads and posts from non-Americans. The world feels smaller to me nowadays.

I have heard the occasional comment that there aren't any interesting threads at the moment- well, if they'd start one, there would be.

No way I'm reading all 284+ messages at this point. I read the first 20 or so several days ago, and will offer this observation: The UK members seem to be ever-increasingly active, and to be posting a higher percentage of the posts than before.

Maybe fewer Americans are joining up while Brits (and other English-speakers) continue to grow in numbers. Maybe current US members are participating less than before. I don't know.

I quit my daily Mudcat "fix" pretty suddenly almost exactly one year ago, on Aug 29 '05, thanks to Hurricane Katrina. I'm gradually starting to check in, and occasionally post, with increasing frequency. I have the distinct impression of a much heavier British presence than a year ago. The demographic shift away from the US is undoubtedly more noticeable to me now, as I return after a year's near-total absense, than it would have been had I been present every day, barely noticing a gradual change...

I've had the same problem with events in the US, Sharon. We have a Portland of our own and I was quite disappointed the first time I realised that an event I would have loved to attend would necessitate a trip to Oregon.

Cuts both ways I guess, but, as it is an American forum it would not be courteous to suggest that you should identify US posts.

I take your point though and will continue to slide a UK tag into anything that I post about events on our side of the pond.

I'm interested in US folk music, as are many of us UK mudcatters. And many US 'catters share an interest in the folk music of the British Isles, and other English-speaking places.

And of course it's not just folk music in the English language (it mostly is, but then it's an English language forum). So if we are careful enough to use terms that are understandable by most people with a good command of English - what's the problem?

Can someone who starts a thread claim to own it? No. The thread belongs to Mudcat.

Not that I personally would use the word "twit" in normal conversation, being an Amurkun and all...

But as long as we're discussing Brits on Mudcat, I'd like to take this opportunity to express one of my pet peeves about Mudcat: When UK 'Catters post threads about a festival or other event, it's often unclear to those of us across the pond that the event is in the UK, even after opening the thread and reading a few posts. I think they forget that many towns in the US are named after towns and regions of the UK. (Case in point: I grew up in Warrington................ Pennsylvania!)

I don't always recognize the Mudcat names on these threads as being those of British 'Catters, so I sometimes get confused about the location of the announced events, and it becomes annoying. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced thie! So please, guys, don't just assume that everyone who visits Mudcat knows all about England's folk community. Remember that this is, as many here have pointed out, a worldwide forum, and please specify where in the world your announced event is taking place!

so, 8, you want only Americans on the Mudcat? That'll be really interesting, cause I've never before shared about folk Music with someone from Argentina or Chile or El Salvador.
By the way, 8, can you point to the Choctaw Nation or the Cherokee Nation on a world map? I only ask, cause some of my relatives were of those nations, & sometimes those nations can be kinda hard to find on maps. And, by the way, an American friend of mine, who lives about 1/2 an hour south of me, was teaching me some of the folk music from his family just the other day. He taught me a song called, "Sin tu Amor." It's really fun to sing, & I can accompany myself on my Guitar.
Where does he live? My friend lives in Tijuana. I have lots of American more friends with I enjoy sharing folk Music. One lives near Vancouver. Another lives on a Polynesian island. I visited her family once, & I never heard such beautiful traditional Music. The lush vocals were angelic! I recall singing a Venezuelan song when I was in college. Maybe a lovely American from Venezuelan can help refresh my memory about correct pronunciation.
I'll really miss all of the non-Americans very, very much. But, wow! It will be quite interesting to have an all American forum.

By the way, 8, can you find Cyberspace on a world map?

No, Dave, I don't think that 282 has received sufficient answer or answers to his concern. His question may, or may not, have been xenophobic in origin but his point was numerically correct. The lack of involvement by Americans in their musical heritage starkly pales with that of British folkies. Ther are a preponderance of English posts because there are so many English folk venues and so few American clubs. 282 seems to blame the British, somehow, for American indifference. Little does 282 realize that there are thousands of venues for traditional music in the US which go under the radar of fanzines like Sing Out and, dare I say, Mudcat.
I have been a full time professional folksinger for almost fifty years and I rarely appear at clubs or big festivals. My audiences are young (schools, libraries, camps, museums, fairs and galas), old (nursing homes, retirement facilities, travel clubs, outings), and in between (civic events, state and county fairs, ethnic orginizations, shopping malls, company parties, country clubs). I have not had to be on the road for years. There is so much work just in my area, and I'm not the only folksinger doing these jobs.
When I lived in Ireland (thirty years ago) I worked in folk clubs throughout the British Isles and I loved it. The venues were many and the audiences were receptive. You guys have it all over us when it comes to the club scene. But, for the purpose of making a living without living out of a suitcase, Philadelphia is to folksingers what Washington, DC is to lawyers.
That Mudcat does not concern itself with the kind of jobs that I do, jobs that are more plentiful in the US than in the UK is, perhaps, why 282 sees so few Americans on these pages.

By the wording of 282s phrase that must mean he has not got an answer? Or does it mean he has not got the answer he wants? In either case I think it is reason and common sense that is the winner in this thread.

The term, "Yank", is, of course a shortened version of the 19th century song title, "Yankee Doodle", which was popular during the War for American independance. A Yankee Doodle was, what we would now call, a bumpkin or a rube. It was a term of derision, not unlike "Paddy", for Irishmen. That we made it into a title of national pride is just one of those quirks of culture. New Englanders were called Yankees until the War Between the States (1861-1865) when the seceding Southerners applied the term to all northerners. A lot of colorful names came out of that era. The Southern states were called Dixie because they were below the Mason-Dixon line that separated Pennsylvania from Maryland (although Maryland did not secede). Poor white southerners were caled "goobers" because it was said that they subsisted on goober peas (peanuts). Men had worn sideburns for years before they were named for Civil War General Burnside and out of luck chaps felt that their name was mud after Dr. Samuel Mudd was convicted for treating the wounded John Wilks Booth after he escaped from that theater.
I am mentioning all these little goodies so that 282 can have some Americana to read.
