Subject: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: GUEST,Spot the Dog Date: 10 Aug 06 - 05:28 PM Recently I (we) had reason to reduce our book collection. (Planning to move home) and I found the amazing book on Hannah Hauxwell who became a celebrity on UK T.V. (Parkinson show and the film "Too long a winter") which recounted the life of Hannah Hauxwell and her times at Low Birk Hatt farm in the Northern Pennines. I am currently rereading the book and once again I am facinated. My question is does anyone have any information on her life currently, Is she still living in Cotherstone (great cheese) and still well. Google has produced nothing but information about Barry Cockcroft's book about her. Myself and my Wife once drove up to Cotherstone just to look at her new home, we didn't call even though Barry Cockcroft said she enjoyed visitors, we felt it would be too intrusive. Any information would be appreciated. Spot the Dog. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Emma B Date: 10 Aug 06 - 05:42 PM I stayed at the Youth Hostel "next door" to her old farm many moons ago in one of those "Winters too many" it was really cold and snow up to..... She was "taken up" by the TV after the programme and did a series called " An Innocent Abroad" or something like that following her journeys in Europe - I don't think she had been further than Barnard Castle before then! Recent web sites show her still living in Cotherstone. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Dave the Gnome Date: 10 Aug 06 - 06:11 PM I know the pub where she was interviewed on TV while purchasing her new house. The Morrit Arms at Greta Bridge - Just off the new bypass. Lovely place although a bit pricey. Used to be run by 2 blokes - One knew his his food and one knew his drink! Dunno if it is still the same. I reckon we could easily do a walk around Greta Bridge / Cotherstone if you fancy, Spot. Take in High Force? I reckon she was a bit of a phoney though. No-one has it that easy in the Dales..;-) Cheers DtG |

My wife and I plan to visit the high country this coming summer, and the trip won`t be complete without a visit to Low Birk Hat Farm, and possibly Hannah`s cottage in Cotherstone village. As a professional artist I plan to complete numerous sketches of the farm and possibly a sitting with Hanna, there is so much inspirational material to record. For those of you that are not up to date, Hannah is alive and well living in a quaint little cottage in Cotherstone village, and the farm has been taken on by a trust, the meadow`s surrounding Low Burk Hat have also been preserved due to there unique flora and fauna, and aptly named Hannah`s meadow. God bless Hanna ,clearly a national treasure. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: skipy Date: 10 Aug 06 - 06:59 PM Scary, today I was given 7 large boxes of books from a mate who does house clearances, I had to bump 95% of them (the books that is not the boxes)I kept the 5% for our folk for MS book table, amongst those I dumped 2 copies of above book. Found in the past that it will not sell, a wonderful story, well told, but not wanted anymore. Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Dave Wynn Date: 11 Aug 06 - 12:07 PM Thanks. Anymore information would be appreciated. Not for research just curiosity. Dave the Gnome. What a good idea. Put me down for that any weekend from 26th 27th August. Spot the Dog |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Emma B Date: 11 Aug 06 - 01:28 PM Not far from there The Pennine Way splits into 2 options and can be walked as a circular route known as the Bowes "loop" We walked it one grim, grey and snowy February to find that the pub at Bowes was shut for refurbishment! A Mudcat walk - what a brilliant idea - can I come too? (maybe not August Bank Holiday as we will be coming back from Scotland via the hotel where they shot the pub scenes for The Wicker Man !!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Aug 06 - 02:12 PM Maybe, Emma. Depends if you are nice to me and Spot on the 28th;-) Sounds like you might be too fit for two knackered old blokes like us though... If Brit Ekland is still dancing about in the nude will you bring us some photos back though? :D (tG) |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Emma B Date: 11 Aug 06 - 03:01 PM sad news Dave it wasn't Brit it was a "body double" I think after 2 weeks on Arran with a load of hard drinking muscians/singers I might need a body double too! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: skipy Date: 11 Aug 06 - 03:34 PM I have access to the elctoral roll, to allow me to return skip finds to people, there is only one Hannah Hauxwell listed & she lives in Crawley, West Sussex. You can pm me for the info. but it may not be the right one. Skipy |

Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Aug 06 - 07:01 AM But I can get you a meeting with the fiddler who played for Britt... he plays for the Albion Morris team occasionally, of which Manitas is a member. He assured me once that yes, it really wasn't Britt doing the noody dancing, but the stunt bum was a considerably nicer person! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Hannah Hauxwell From: skipy Date: 12 Aug 06 - 08:05 AM A body double was secretly used for the naked rear shots of Willow dancing. The scenes were filmed after Britt Ekland had left the set. The body double was used because Ekland was pregnant at the time. Skipy |
