Subject: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: Celtaddict Date: 10 Aug 06 - 06:15 PM We are fortunate to have visiting in the New London, Connecticut area, on Saturday, 26 August, Danny O'Flaherty, of Connemara and late of New Orleans, for many years the proprietor of O'Flaherty's Irish Channel Pub in the French Quarter, where he played regularly in the Ballad Room. He will be in New London for Celts & Currachs, the first celtic heritage day in New London, Connecticut. We will have currach rowing instruction in the morning, then food, music, dancing, exhibition racing, and finish up with a concert by Danny at the historic waterfront park of downtown New London. While he is in the area, we would love to help enable more people to hear this very special performer. We are planning a house concert too, on Friday night, so please e-mail me if you are interested. I am attaching information about Celts & Currachs and about Danny O'Flaherty. If you are interested in having him perform at your venue or home, please contact me at Mudcatters, this event is FREE, sponsored by the City of New London, through New London Main Street, with Celtic Cause. |

Subject: RE: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: JedMarum Date: 24 Aug 06 - 01:39 PM ... and don't forget Danny's at this one too; CLICK for THREAD This event used to have Currach demos and races too - but the last few years, the weather and flooding have been sooo appalling they've given up on the boats and moved the festival indoors! |
Subject: RE: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: InOBU Date: 24 Aug 06 - 07:00 PM Hello Banjo Kong: Monty O'Leary of Co. Kerry and I built three of the boats and laid out much of the fourth, however the experience put me off building boats in this country but you can contact me for Monty's number if you'd like. He was not terribly happy as well, and said he was out of building racing boats after the experience as well, but I'd be happy to put you on to him. I gave a club in Long Island his number, so maybe I can put you in touch with them, getting several boats done might intice Monty to come over. Good luck, lorcan. |
Subject: RE: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: InOBU Date: 24 Aug 06 - 07:01 PM PS I noticed that you are a guest, so if you join mudcat you can pm me, or else you can email me at InOBU@aol.com. I get a lot of email, so title it Currachs, or something that will stand out. |

Subject: RE: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: Celtaddict Date: 28 Aug 06 - 11:13 AM Also, Pat Folan, another of the handful of traditional currach builders, will be in the U.S. in two weeks, building currachs; I can put you in touch with him or with his American hosts. Two other traditional builders in Ireland are Eddie Hutchinson and [Joe Mike?] Lally. There are also people in Boston, Baltimore, and Mystic who have been trained by traditional builders. Also, Cian de Buitlear has published dual language (English and Irish) books on making both wooden and canvas currachs (and Galway hookers too); these include full plans and a DVD. In the book he publishes his contact i nformation at If you Google 'currachs', there is a company in Ireland that makes them to ship But if you are in the U.S. please e-mail me! |
Subject: RE: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: Greg B Date: 28 Aug 06 - 03:04 PM How was it? Traditional Irish pulling weather? (We were up at Pushaw Lake in Maine a couple of weeks back, and after dispairing of getting a vintage FoldBoat down from (or rather back up into) the rafters I thought that a currach might have been just the thing for that lake.) |
Subject: RE: Danny O'Flaherty, Celts&Currachs, CT, US From: GUEST,celtaddict at the library Date: 28 Aug 06 - 05:05 PM Greg, the weather was perfect. Danny said he brought the Irish weather, and it rained almost all day Friday and Sunday, but on Saturday, not a drop, cool, mild, breeze off the river, not too hot for rowers or dancers in costumes, not too cool for spectators nor for the winners of the race (the Connecticut State Police Emerald Society team) to jump in the river. (A tradition is born.) Hope you can come down and join us next year! |
