Subject: RE: songs from the Great War? From: Lighter Date: 02 Sep 06 - 05:02 PM Lt. Nettleingham was the compiler of both "Tommy's Tunes" and "More Tommy's Tunes." Max Arthur has recently compiled "When This Bloody War is Over." On the American side, there's Edward A. Dolph's "Sound Off." The movie Fred mentions, "Oh What a Lovely War," is in a class by itself. Very worth while if you're interested in more than songs. But the songs really are from 1914-18. |

Subject: RE: songs from the Great War? From: NH Dave Date: 07 Nov 06 - 11:46 AM No joy in When this Blody War is Over, which doesn't mean that it wasn't a WWI song, but indicates that it is less likely. Is it possible that you are talking about something from WWII? Dave |
Subject: RE: songs from the Great War? From: GUEST,Georgina Boyes Date: 07 Nov 06 - 12:31 PM When this Bloody War is Over is from the Great War. The reference to 'standing to in trenches', 'standing on the firestep' and 'Tickler's marmalade' in the third verse all relate to trench warfare on the Western Front. There's also a clue in the title of Max Arthur's book - When This Bloody War is Over: Soldiers' Songs of the First World War |
