"MADRID (AFP) - Excessively skinny fashion models will be barred from a major Madrid fashion show later this month for fear they could send the wrong message to young Spanish girls, local media reported.

Madrid's regional government, which is co-financing the Pasarela Cibeles, has vetoed around a third of the models who took part in last year's show because they weigh too little.

The authorities collaborated with a Spanish health organisation to come up with a minumum body mass -- a height-weight ratio -- of 18 for the models.

Spanish daily ABC said it was the first time such restrictions had been imposed on a fashion show, although a recent wedding dress exhibition in Barcelona banned fashion models who took a dress size below 38 (British size 10, US size eight)."

Let's just compare this. Regulation of extreme porn is a matter (I agree) that needs consideration and debate before imposition, but images of women who are "too thin" may not be published?

As usual the wrong end of the stick is being grabbed there Richard. It is the celebration of the emaciated body shape that must be stopped, whereas the regulation of pornography is not intended to stop it.

I know which I consider the more obscene but then I've worked with teenage anorexic girls, at least one of whom died. Don't know if there was a direct, causal link, don't care much either, I just welcome any sane move to get young people to appreciate that their worth isn't solely in their body weight.

I definitely agree with you Morty. The media perception of female beauty as being as thin as possible is, to me, abhorrent.

A new article from the British Journal of Psychology:

Male students had to judge which females (on pictures) they found most attractive. (And they were asked when they had eaten the last time and how much).

The hungry males preferred well proportioned females, those who had eaten enough (or even more) preferred skinny females.

Men being too fat is, therefore, the main reason for the choice of the skinny models.

I love/hate the fashion designers saying, "Well, the clothes are supposed to hang a certain way, so the girls have to have a certain body type," as an excuse for not--hello--cutting clothes to hang on girls with padding. Clothes should hang on hangers, not bodies.

Not that they actually care about making CLOTHES, anyway, since it's all a big egomaniacal art show, anyway.

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- German designer Karl Lagerfeld on Wednesday shrugged off concerns about the fashion industry's obsession with ultra-thin models, noting countries such as France rather had problems with a rise in overweight people.

Madrid last month sparked a controversy when it banned excessively thin models from its catwalks after accusations their appearance may cause eating disorders in young women.

But the runways in Paris this week have been filled by girls with child-like figures and stick-thin legs.

"We don't see anorexic (girls). The girls are skinny. They have skinny bones," Lagerfeld told reporters after his show, which saw models parade out in tiny short dresses, barely covering their almost non-existent behinds.

Asked whether the fashion industry was to blame for eating disorders of many young girls who were starving themselves, the designer said: "No, that is something to sell papers."

The pony-tailed Lagerfeld, who has himself drastically shed weight, is presenting clothes for his Karl Lagerfeld label in Paris, as well as for fashion house Chanel.
