Subject: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Oct 06 - 02:44 PM We have another thread (click) active today on "Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea." I thought that one was a camp song, but it turnd sout to be a composed song recorded by The Four Lads. It reminded me of a camp song that my little sister used to sing to drive me crazy, "Hagalena Magalena." This page (click) has one version of the lyrics: MAGALENA HAGALENA Chorus: Oh Magalena Hagalena Okanocka-walkatalka-okanokapoka was her name. She had two hairs on the middle of her head, One was alive and the other was dead. [Chorus] She had two teeth in the middle of her mouth, One pointed north and the other pointed south. [Chorus] She had two bumps in the middle of her knees, One bump coughed while the other bump sneezed. [Chorus] She had two feet sized eleven and a half, One took a shower while the other took a bath. [Chorus] She had two hips like battleships, One stayed home while the other took trips. [Chorus] A ten-ton truck ran over Magalena, The poor truck-driver had to buy a new machine! [Chorus] Any others? -Joe- |
Subject: ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Oct 06 - 02:49 PM Now, the way my sister used to sing it was more like this: HAGALENA MAGALENA CHORUS Hagalena Magalena Whoopensteiner Walkenheimer Mooga Mooga Mooga Was her name. She had long hair down her back The ends were yellow and the roots were black A ten-ton truck hit Magalene They had to buy a new machine She had two teeth in her mouth One pointed north and the other pointed south (from memory - I'm sure I'll remember more verses later.) If I recall correctly, my sister learned this at Camp Singing Hills, the camp of the Girl Scouts of Racine, Wisconsin. My sister's camp name was Frankie. In the 1980's in Sacramento, I met a woman who had known my sister as Frankie, not as Mary Ann. I suppose that in all fairness, I should ask my sister to drop by and comment. I suppose that in all fairness, I also should admit that there may have been a few things that I did to drive her crazy, too.... I think there was a verse about Seven-Up, but I can't remember that one. Let's see if I can remember or remember and extrapolate some others: She had two eyes in her head One was yellow and the other was red |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: GUEST,Joe's sister Date: 13 Oct 06 - 10:56 PM Ah, now I see how the posts work. I should have investigated more. Sorry! Yes, Joe's right about the way we sang the chorus, and about the yellow and red eyes too. And I see that he's got the roots and ends part down also. Isn't it great how some of the annoying stuff I did to him 45 years ago is still with him? But surely he's treated some of you to the many rounds of "You're Always Welcome at Our House" or "Great Green Gobs of Greasy, Grimey Gopher Guts" that he used to sing with great gusto to make my skin crawl. Everyone's family does that to each other when they're kids, don't they? Mary Ann |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: NH Dave Date: 14 Oct 06 - 01:04 AM One of the "popular" folk groups like the Kingston Trio, used to sing a song about a little Hawaiian whose name ended up, Sammakammawaki Brown, and was so long that by the time each person in the chain trying to get him help repeated it to the next person or organization involved, was drowned in the well he had fallen into. Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 14 Oct 06 - 10:13 AM Amba's and my version, put together from several sources: MAGGALENA HAGGALENA Cho: Maggalena Haggalena, Ookataka Wakataka, Oka Loka Poka was her name. She had two hairs in the middle of her head, One was alive and the other was dead, She had two eyes in the front of her head, One was green and the other was red, She had two holes in the end of her nose, One was open and the other was closed, She had two cheeks in the sides of her face, One blew bubbles and the other blew paste, She had two teeth in the middle of her mouth, One pointed north and the other pointed south, She had two hands at the ends of her arms, One rang bells and the other rang charms. She had two knees in the middle of her legs, One liked bacon and the other liked eggs, She had two feet size forty-four and a half, One took a shower, the other took a bath, She had two kids just the other day, They took one look at her and ran away, (Sung s-l-o-w-l-y) A ten ton truck hit poor Maggalena, (Sung quickly, chipper) The driver had to buy a new machine-a, The hips and knees verses are good stuff and new to us! It's also known as "Catalina Maddelina" and other versions of the name. The fourth "cheeks" verse is Amba's, the rest is traditional. Amba is also guilty of another verse but usually forbears: She had two boobs in the middle of her chest, One pointed east, the other pointed west, By the way, NH Dave, the song you refer to is "Eddie Koochie Catchinary", goes like this: Eddie Koochie Catchinary Toesinary Toesinary Sammy Gammy Wacky Brown Fell into the well, feel into the well, Fell into the deep dark well. Susie Jones was milkin' in the barn, Saw him fall, and ran inside to tell her mom that Eddie, etc. It has four verses and he drowns at the end. I never knew of any pop group version of it, Kingstons or otherwise, but it's pretty well known among singers of silly songs at camps and elsewhere. Bob |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 06 - 04:54 PM Oh, we have Eddie....Brown well-covered in this thread (click), Bob. It was recorded by The Brothers Four. I have to say that I am surprised and disappointed that my sister, of whom I am so proud, didn't remember any more "Hagalena" verses than I did. I'm glad you came up with more, Bob. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: RangerSteve Date: 30 Jan 07 - 05:56 PM I heard it sung on the radio once. The chorus went: (Name) was her name, what a shame. The last time around, they sang the chorus twice as fast. |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: DADGBE Date: 29 Apr 07 - 10:54 PM I got my version from Sandy and Caroline Paton. It lingered in the recesses of my brain until Laura Sandage and Katie heard a version at the Alaska Folk Festival this April. Since we're the group, MudLark, we performed it last night where Joe Offer heard it and wrote to me asking for comment on this thread. So far we've come up with 4 different versions, all rhyming, all non-sense, all fun. Thanks for your kind words about the concert, Joe! |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: clueless don Date: 30 Apr 07 - 08:48 AM I remember hearing this song in the deep recesses of the past. I recall the last part of the chorus being something like "...and a rolly polly polly was her na-a-me" (the first syllable of "rolly" and "polly" rhymes with "roll" - "polly" is not pronounced as in "Polly wants a cracker".) I also remember part of one verse, something like She had two [???] size forty eight big enough for the empire state or it might have been "the entire state". The missing word may have been "feet". Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: open mike Date: 16 Oct 07 - 04:13 AM Catalina Madalena Broomstein Wall, Hogen Bogen Logan was her name.. is the lyric that comes up in my brain.. funny, these camp songs are rarely written down, but exist in the minds as oral tradition. some live only in 8-12 year olds and then disappear! strange phenomenon |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Hagalena Magalena From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 08 - 07:33 PM I knew it as Madalena Hagelena whoopensteiner Wallenmeyer, Hogen Bogen Logan was her name. We sang it in Girl Scouts 50+ years ago. When I ask my students (I teach high school) about whether they sang it in their Girl Scouts recently, they didn't have a clue as to what the song was or what the lyrics were. Same for the old favorite "do your ears hang low" Remember that one... Lovely little ditty.... |
