Hi gang.
I'm just off the phone with Tawmmie.
Mike is still unconscious, still critical.
But his vital signs have stabilized, but he's very swollen with fluid retention.
In fact, his kids are calling him 'Jabba the Dad'.
Tawmmie is very grateful for all the prayers and good wishes, and remains upbeat though she herself was hoarse and sounded exhausted.
He is in the Alaska Regional CCU Center, Room 12, but of course, he cannot have phone calls........yet.
So keep those thoughts and prayers coming 'Catters.

I don't think I have ever maet a man more full of life and relaxed vitality than out Mike. I'm just picturing him as a big ole bear, hibernating with a few more spectators than usual, who will no doubt wonder what the party is about when he wakes up and sees us all cavorting in hysterical relief.

Thanks Seamus.....Sounds like we all need to turn the volume up a bit. Is he in a medically induced coma? They do that at times because it makes it easier to treat conditions and keep the vitals in line.

Tawmmie, get all the rest you possibly can and I know that's not easy but when he comes around he'll feel worse if you look as though he has worn you out too. I know I always do. This last time around, I also was ready to give it all up as I came around but Karen cranked up her strength and her anger and made threats.......so I got better instead.

Tawmmie is a special gal. I loved watching Mike sing, big old boisterous Scot, belting out songs, with Tawmmie sitting behind him quietly knitting. Mike would get hung up on a lyric, Tawmmie would quietly cue him without ever looking up, he would keep right on going like nothing happened. Yep, she is a special one, that gal.

Spaw, I can't answer your question. I'm just passing on what Tawmmie told me. But I sense that it is a medically induced coma.
Apparently the big guy had gastric bypass surgery, and this may be related to that.
I told her about the 'Catters' wishing both her and Mike well, and she was glad to hear it.
She doesn't know how to use a computer to see for herself all the get-wells, so unless Tracy or one of their other kids logs on to the 'Cat, we'll just have to wait for Mikey his own bad self to tell us all is well.

It doesn't really matter exactly why Mike in trouble, or that Tawmmie can't be Mudcatting for herself to see our posts as they come in.

What matters is that we just do what she asked, and trust her to know what help she needed when she called, Seamus, and trust Seamus to know that we will do exactly as he asked.

The rest is our worried distraction-- and folks, please, don't let your worry and your desire to understand distract you from just holding the good thoughts we all have in our hearts for our dear Mike.

Here's Seamus' message, again:

Hi 'Catters.
I got a call from Alaska Mike's wife Tawmmie letting me know that he's in critical condition in hospital in Anchorage. ( I don't know which hospital).
He's been in since Monday with a herniated twisted intestine, and has been heavily sedated.
The good news is that they took him off dialysis this morning, although he's still unconscious.
Tawmmie asked me to post this so that prayers/good thoughts/positive vibes/healing light can be directed his way.
When he comes out of sedation and can sit up, Tawmmie will bring his laptop in to him, so we can get all the gory details from Mike himself.

OK, 'Catters, let's help him get well.

I'm sure the sedation is just to keep him under while the incredibly painful event heals. I'm sure the twist has been addressed and the herniation resolved. The intervention must surely be over, and the healing underway.

Hi everyone,

You are all marvelous fun people and we thank you SO MUCH for all your thoughts and prayers. I have printed out this thread and we will read it to mike in the hospital. He's currently listening to a fabulous selection of his favorite music (himself) on his brand new ipod.

The hospital staff (alaska regional critical care unit rm#12) is still keeping Mike sedated. They cut out the sedation completely for a while yesterday to see if he'd wake up. He didn't, so they put him back under completely and will try again later.

I've got all my kids and grandkids up here with me this week taking good care of me and cooking weird food.

I will try to keep up with this board, but be aware that updates may be far between and sketchy as I'm currently dictating this email through my daughter.

Let me add a bit to our Tawmmie's post. Seamus called me with an update after talking to Tawmmie and the kids.

Mike is doing as well as can be expected. As you all know, he got the twisted bowel, and there was a rupture. He has been on an intensive antibiotic regimen, and yesterday they reduced the level of antibiotics substantially. They are not too concerned over his not waking just yet.

Seamus taught the kids how to log on to Mudcat, so presumably the posts will all be printed and read to the big galoot.

Keep up the prayers and posts. As Spawzer can tell you, it is a tremendous pickup to know folks are thinking of you.

Susan I wasn't taking anything away at all and sometimes it helps to understand a bit...maybe not. No one is being forced to tell me a thing! Gastric Torsion was a major topic around here at one point as it is one of the more serious and tougher possible side effects of gastric bypass.

Besides, I'm trying to get my medical degree from I-Got-It University (;<))

Once again Tawmmie, both you and Mike have our best thoughts and wishes for as quick a healing and as fast a recovery as possible.

Now Mike I have to say you are one of the easiest people to visualize as strong and vibrant and ready; for life. When I was asked to do a workshop on happy endings the first songs that came to mind were some of yours. Of course I make a pretty silly Mexican Cowboy, but Salmon Love definatelly fits the bill and Little Jim comes through some harrowing times quite intact.
