Persephone was abducted by Pluto, god of the underworld, while she was gathering flowers. Responding to the entreaties of her mother, Demeter, Zeus allowed Persephone to spend six months of each year on the earth.

The Return of Persephone

Gliding through the still air, he made no sound;
Wing-shod and deft, dropped almost at her feet,
And searched the ghostly regiments and found
The living eyes, the tremor of breath, the beat
Of blood in all that bodiless underground.
She left her majesty; she loosed the zone
Of darkness and put by the rod of dread.
Standing, she turned her back upon the throne
Where, well she knew, the Ruler of the Dead,
Lord of her body and being, sat like stone;

Stared with his ravenous eyes to see her shake
The midnight drifting from her loosened hair,
The girl once more in all her actions wake,
The blush of colour in her cheeks appear
Lost with her flowers that day beside the lake.

The summer flowers scattering, the shout,
The black manes plunging down to the black pit --
Memory or dream? She stood awhile in doubt,
Then touched the Traveller God's brown arm and met
His cool, bright glance and heard his words ring out:

"Queen of the Dead and Mistress of the Year!"
-- His voice was the ripe ripple of the corn;
The touch of dew, the rush of morning air --
"Remember now the world where you were born;
The month of your return at last is here."

And still she did not speak, but turned again
Looking for answer, for anger, for command:
The eyes of Dis were shut upon their pain;
Calm as his marble brow, the marble hand
Slept on his knee. Insuperable disdain

Foreknowing all bounds of passion, of power, of art,
Mastered but could not mask his deep despair.
Even as she turned with Hermes to depart,
Looking her last on her grim ravisher
For the first time she loved him from her heart.

AD Hope

Bob Dylan is still not 'folk' as far as I am concerned. But a lot of people are saying he is.

In Iraq, we have "mission accomplished" as far as 'some' people are concerned.

etc.................

Definitions need to reflect something other than personal prejudices and emotional reactions.

Please disregard ALL astrological predictions. If you have paid fees for an astrological consultation you are now entitled to a refund or a revised "prediction" based on the amended astrological charts.
How is it that the astrologers could not predict the "demise" of planet Pluto.

I gather than when Pluto was discovered back in 1930 there was lots of criticism that all the astrology charts & predictions were wrong, and indeed to this day I believe a lot of Astrology excludes Pluto.

Not doubt they will now claim to have been right all along! *grin*

"Pluto: Planet, Schmanet, Janet!"

"I'd been reading last month about how Pluto is officially no longer a planet, and I'd thought about writing about it, but never got round to it. Then today I read Eric Meyer's post on the Plutonian Process and thought, what the heck, I might as well get round to doing it now. Incidentally, although it isn't an official planet anymore, it is considered a dwarf planet and the prototype for trans-Neptunian objects. Well, I'm sure it feels better for that.

Eric seems quite happy that Pluto is no longer a planet. Scientifically, I'm sure he's correct. But as someone who has always taken a keen interest in the use of words and I am a firm believer in the evolution of language, then frankly I don't think the current astronomical definition of planet is good enough. It doesn't translate easily into a short, snappy sentence. If people continue to use the term "planet" in reference to Pluto, then the common usage definition of "planet" will be different from the scientific one. I'm not saying that's a bad thing: after all, science needs to have a very specific and precise use of language. I just think that if I call Pluto a planet and someone tells me I'm wrong, I'll tell them where they can go … to. It's like the fact that HTML, by dint of common usage, is an acronym. Some purists may insist on calling it an initialism, but I'll tell them that they can go … away too, and that because language evolves, it's also a bloody acronym too, all right?

After that, my thoughts were along the lines of: does it really matter? After all, Pluto will go on being itself for some time to come, regardless of what classification system we use for it, or what we decide to call it. For that matter, it will go on being called a planet by many members of the general public for some time to come, regardless of what astronomers say. But then it occurred to me that there are perhaps some questions that the astronomers didn't consider.

Firstly, what does this mean for astrologers? Now that Pluto is no longer is no longer a planet, what does this mean for the influence on Uranus? (Sorry, couldn't resist)"

Personally, I don't pay no never mind to what them scientists said 'bout Pluto. I figure they don't know beans about astrology.

Most astrologers still consider Pluto to be a planet. And Pluto ain't takin his precious time to play games with those scientists. He's dealin! He got Abramoff and Ney and he got Allen on the run with his macaca name callin self...Then he got Mark Foley who blamed what he had done on a priest messin with him which brought that whole Catholic priest, sex, church coverup mess back into the news...Yeah the sh*t is hittin the fan all over the place! I'd say that mighty Pluto doin his thing. He's really got it goin on! Pluto aint even takin one smigen of time to worry bout what them scientist said bout him not being a planet. Planet/ Smanet.. You say tomato and I'll say tomahto. Just do you thing Pluto..we need ya down here, keep pullin the covers off and exposing those SOBs...We been waitin for a change to come. Bring it on home, now Pluto! Yeah!

What? You wonderin what sh*t and sex and politics and corruption boiling up to the surface have to do with Pluto?

If you have a mind to, check this out:

http://www.myastrologybook.com/Pluto-in-astrology.htm

"Pluto is the outermost planet of the solar system, and the end of the process of breaking down the reality structure of normal consciousness begun by Uranus. Pluto supplies the energy for the evolutionary process whereby outmoded or dysfunctional entities are transformed through death and rebirth into new ones higher on the evolutionary path. This outmoded entity is often a part of our ego with which we are identified, and without which we feel we cannot live. If we resist Pluto here instead of surrendering to the necessary ego death and personal transformation, mental illness or even breakdown can occur. Pluto causes the disintegration of psychological blocks obstructing our evolutionary growth. Its energy comes from the core of all things, and is the most intense and potent there is: atomic, nuclear, sexual, kundalini. If we allow the fear of the death of some part of our self to block it's process, the result can be catastrophic.

In your horoscope Pluto symbolizes death, rebirth, sex, evolution, degeneration and regeneration, and symbolizes the breakdown of psychological blocks that prevent evolutionary growth. It is the higher octave of Mars, where it represents the conscious self-knowledge and self-mastery of the magician and alchemist standing above brute force and physical prowess; and it is also the fabulous and elusive Phoenix bird. Pluto rules the sign Scorpio in which initially/exoterically it symbolizes mastery of the emotions through the use of the will, and finally/esoterically it represents transcendence through consciousness of the ego-identified self. This is the true and liberating death of the self born here to earth...

The god of the underworld, Pluto represents what is buried deep inside of you and needs to be brought to the light, or to have light brought to it. Thus miners, spelunkers, geologists, subway workers, psychotherapists, healers, religious leaders and detectives fall under the positive rays of Pluto. On the other side we have organized crime, spies, the socially disaffected, and terrorists. Politicians representative of historical forces or power in general also serve Pluto. Pluto also rules the black race."

-snip-

Well, I don't know whether I believe that last bit about Pluto ruling the black race {which black race?] but anyways, if so we some bad----hush my mouth!

And that's all I'mma say about that!

How often does Pluto come up, other than in arguements about if it's a planet? The only example of any size, is, as noted astrology, and if Pluto was so important for a horoscope, shouldn't astrologers have notuiced it was missing before it was found?

To qualify as a planet:-
1. Its own gravity has had to make it round(ish)
2. It has to orbit the Sun
3. It has had to have cleared all the debris from around itself, whatever that means.
So Pluto qualifies with Charon, Ceres and the other one whose name I've forgotten. Only a minority of the body who decides these things voted to downgrade it and lots of astronomers have protested. So it may be upgraded again.

Janine

PS I fulfill 2 & 3 but not 1 so I'm not a planet!

"Pluto is the outermost planet of the solar system..."

since they have now discovered several OTHER bodies of the same general size as Pluto waaaayyyyy out there, in equally eccentric orbits, maybe the astrologers need to go back and recalculate everything, hmmm?

....oh, no? I see....if they don't have cute names the astrologers can play on, it doesn't count...*grin*

Enough suckers believers need to have heard of them for the astrologers to find them useful. Beliveing this thing you've never heard of, leat alone seen, has some important influence over you would be almost a religion.

I will be good, I will not restart the astrology debate, that was bad enough last time....

The following link goes to an archived Vanity Fair article.
Over ten years old.

When the author, who had been Vanity Fair's astrology columnist for twenty years,
next heard from the magazine about his contract,
it had not been renewed.
The astrologer in question is still around --
just not working for Vanity Fair anymore.

Guess that's what happens when you spill the beans about Pluto?

IMO Pluto has such a bizarre orbit that it is plausible to put it in a class by itself. I would call it an *antisatellite of Neptune*. It moves in such a way as keep Neptune as far away as it can.

The Earth has an asteroid that orbits very close but behind the Earth in a cork screw manner. Orbits can be wild.
Pluto has a boiling roiling Nitrogen sea but in super slo-mo.
