Now I know Amos has been heavily advertising and even compiling a songbook for the Doo-Wop workshop, but I want to make sure y'all know there's ANOTHER chance to sing those songs at which Purist Snobs like Bill Day turn up their noses...

On Saturday, after lunch, in the Nature Center (it's been moved since the original schedule), Big Mick and I will be hosting "Guilty Pleasures", which is NOT songs about the Seven Deadly Sins (my favorite is Sloth - what's yours?). Instead, it is all those songs we memorized as teenagers or in college, from the radio or our own battered LP collections, which we would NEVER admit to knowing in front of our dyed-in-the-wool Traditional Ballad and "If-it's-not-over-100-years-old-or-collected-by-Lomax-or-Sharp-it's-not-folk" friends.

Beatles. Dionne Warwick. Led Zeppelin. Johnny Cash. Joni Mitchell. Talking Heads. Aretha Franklin. James Taylor. Patsy Cline. Bruce Springsteen. Carly Simon. Garth Brooks. Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Merrill Lynch, Fenner & Pierce. Bee Gees. Donna Summer. Hootie & the Blowfish. Carole King. Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. Broadway show tunes (although I may insist on an Andrew-Lloyd-Weber-free zone). We'll even allow a few songs from Amos' Doo Wop list, as long as you don't take over the entire workshop!

From the sublime to the ridiculous, if you know it and love it, come belt it out at Guilty Pleasures. I would be especially grateful if a few versatile guitar players can provide rhythm tracks for singers (how can anyone do a Spinal Tap song without a few power chords in the background?).

This is not intended to be a "How-tacky-can we-get" workshop - I would prefer that people sing songs they actually really do like. It's sort of like the ground rules at my "Midwestern Cooking" potluck barbecue - folks could bring any dish that was part of Midwestern Cuisine, from Jello salad to Tuna Hot Dish - but it had to be something the contributor was actually willing to eat!

I said: hmmmpppf! The proper term is "Folk Fascist", bestowed on me on live folk radio 20 or so years ago by Mary Cliff of WETA.

May the ghost of A.L.Lloyd Bruce Olson haunt your workshop!

While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl

Now, Bill, in my foggy memory, you used to have an Official "Purist Snob" T-shirt with the words written in silver glitter...

Bruce O. wouldn't haunt this workshop - he only objected to people who did pop-folk-processed versions of genuine traditional songs. I still remember the irate letter he wrote to the FSGW Board after a Cindy Kallet concert in which she and her friends sang (beautifully) Andy Stewart's version of "If I Was a Blackbird" and clearly demonstrated they were unaware of the traditional version. Bruce wrote a long screed about the FSGW hiring musicians who didn't know what a traditional song was. I was Secretary of the Board at the time, and got to write the "Thank-you -for-voicing-your-concerns" reply...

I'll light the fire,
You place the flowers
In the vase that you bought today...

Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray...

Oh, boys, take me back
I wanna ride in Geronimo's Cadillac
Oh, boys, I wanna see it for real
I wanna ride in Geronimo's automobile...

Pressed rat and Warthog have closed down their shop;
They didn't want to - was all that they got
Selling Aeternal Apples and Amplified Heat
And Pressed Rat's collection of Dogs' Legs and Feet...

Let me ride on the Wall of Death one more time,
Let me ride on the Wall of Death one more time;
You can waste your time on the other rides
This is the nearest to being alive;
Oh, let me take my chances on the Wall of Death!

So many songs, so little time...

okay, okay! *grin*....but your memory is very good, Mary....I lost that T-shirt at Glen Echo, maybe 15 years ago, when we were storing stuff in the ballroom loft.(It had a decal of the dog at the Victrola, too!) "Purist Snob" it is, then...

I'm hopin' that popularized versions of trad songs from the likes of The Kingston Trio, Brothers Four, etc. will also fall into the category of guilty pleasures--or is the workshop intended more for non-folk music that we like?

Thanks, Richard. There are lyrics and two differing sets of tabs for "Ruby" on http://www.guitaretab.com/r/rolling-stones/16408.html.

Here's one:

Am       C    F         G       C

She would never say where she came from

Am         D    F      C       G

Yeasterday don't matter if it's gone

Am       D7    G      Am       D7      G

While the sun is bright or in the darkest night

          C      G

Noone knows, she comes and goes

C      G   C                      G          C

Good - bye Ruby Tuesday, who could hang a name on you

C         G          Bb    F

When you change with every new day

G               C       G

Still I'm gonna miss you
