Subject: Getaway 2006 Program Information
From: Carly
Date: 22 Aug 06 - 05:37 PM

Coming to the Getaway? This is your chance to tell us, the Getaway Program Committee, what you want in the way of workshops, concerts, etc. this year. We (Rita Ferrara, Nancy King and I, with help from others,) are already at work, and we need your input. If you have been to the Getaway before, you know that our program is as inclusive and participatory as we can make it, so we need to have a clear idea of who is coming and what kinds of music you like.

We will be talking to people individually, as well, but we are hoping that this thread will generate some ideas, and perhaps introduce us to new Getaway-goers. Please, if you know that you are coming this year, post to this thread and tell us what you like to play, sing, and listen to, what kinds of open sings and jams you enjoy, and if you have an idea for a workshop you would like to attend or lead. Were there workshops at former Getaways that you would like to see happen again (or not?)Do you have special interests of your own that you would like to share? If you prefer, you can PM me, or any of the committee.

Please remember that we are still gathering information, and so cannot even begin to firm up our schedule yet. There are so many factors to consider, including the challenges that a new site presents, that we cannot promise at this point that any particular workshop will happen, or tell you who will lead what. We will post details later as things come together.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to seeing you in November.
Carly

FSGW Getaway
2006 Getaway

Friday to Monday, November 3 to 6, 2006
West River Conference Center (West River, MD)

Get away from it all, at the height of the autumn color season, and make music together with your neighbors and musicians from all over the world. (People last year came from as far away as Guam, Alaska, Iceland, England, and Israel.) Our new location at West River Conference Center (West River, MD) has heated facilities and flat terrain, and is on the shores of an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. West River is a lovely spot with lots of inviting places to jam or sing, from first light to the wee hours.

To register, download and fill out the registration form. You'll need to mail it to our registrar, Dean Clamons (P.O. Box 217, Clifton, VA 22024-0217), along with payment. If you need a scholarship or price break, contact Charlie Baum, head of the Scholarship Committee. If you need to pay in foreign currency, contact Dick Greenhaus at Camsco to make arrangements.

For 2006, the dates are Friday afternoon, November 3rd, through Monday morning breakfast, November 6th.

Getaway?

For over 40 years FSGW has held its fall Getaway weekend so that members and friends can share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxed camp setting.

The Getaway is:
  • A chance to interact with the FSGW community and meet talented music lovers from our local area and from as far away as Great Britain, Alaska, and Israel.
  • Music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the shore;
  • Group singing and jamming at its best;
  • A rich program of workshops with opportunities for learning, jamming, singing, crafts, and storytelling;
  • Trying a craft--quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years;
  • Great food;
  • A terrific weekend for the whole family, with lots of special children's activities;
  • A wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing--or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.

  • Our New Camp--West River

We've got a new space this year--we've changed to a camp that's heated, flat, closer to town, and more compact. The West River Conference Center (West River, MD) is run by the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. The West River Center is on the shore of an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. If the weather is clear, you can watch a sunrise over the water. Because the West River Center didn't have any weekends in October where we could have the entire camp to ourselves, we've moved the weekend this year into the first weekend of November--but remember, we've got a heated facility, so shivering nights (and days) should be a thing of the past!

    Heated Bedrooms--and More!

There are 50 bedrooms in 6 buildings. All bedrooms feature two bunk beds (two upper and two lower) with mattresses (bring your own pillows, bedding, and towels). All bedrooms feature controllable heat, and all accommodations are near good flush plumbing and hot showers (with separate mens and womens bathrooms in each building).

We've got five lodges and the "retreat center" building--each lodge contains 8 bedrooms centered around a common lounge, and the retreat center offers 10 bedrooms off of a hall, and a couple of common rooms. All bedrooms contain four beds--two upper bunks and two lower bunks. (There is only one exception--a sextuple with three upper and three lower bunks in the retreat center.) This may provide challenges to our housing arranger, and there are many people who are beyond the age or capabilities of managing their way into and out of an upper bunk, so we're going to ask those who can handle upper bunks to volunteer. We'll even give you a discount. If you cannot handle an upper bunk, or have further special needs, let us know on the registration form. If you wish to bring an RV, you may do so and guarantee your privacy, but there are no hook-ups, and you'll have to pay the same fees as those occupying a room, because that's what the camp charges us.

    More Music Making Spaces

There are five lodges with common rooms for music making, a retreat center with one room to serve for registration and "the mall" (for crafts and CD sales), and another common room for music making, a "nature center" building suitable for larger gatherings, and the dining hall, with a view of the West River. There's a waterfront (though by November, it will be beyond the season for anything except viewing; families with small children are warned about the potential water hazard). Most of the buildings are wheelchair accessible, although three of the lodges still aren't.

We will designate one lodge as a quiet house, and keep its lounge quiet of music for people who want to nap at any hour. At least one lodge will be have a music-all-night common room, for people who want to "sleep" with the sound of partying. In addition, the nature center and dining room offer spaces for late-night music.

    Closer to DC

West River is 45 acres of woodlands, natural wildlife areas and one mile of water front on the West River, an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. It is just 19 miles south of historic Annapolis and within one hour's drive of Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

For folks who remember Camp Letts, it's 10 miles from Camp Letts by car (and 5 miles by boat). Folks coming from Virginia and the South get off the Beltway onto Pennsylvania Avenue (MD4) near Camp Springs (Exit 11). Folks from the Northern suburbs of DC go out Route 50 to Annapolis and then South for about 19 miles. From Baltimore and BWI, I-97 leads south to Annapolis, and for folks from Delaware, New Jersey, and points North, you can go south in Delaware and cross the Bay Bridge (US 50) at Annapolis to bypass Baltimore. For detailed directions, click here.

    Fees

We have rates for one, two, or three nights, and one for day-trippers who don't want to eat. (You MUST register in advance if you wish to dine!)

Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. See the registration form for the fee that applies to you. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event--food, camp rental, etc. We try to keep them as low as possible, but the event needs to cover its costs--and the rates of the new camp will actually allow us to reduce fees a bit from last year, especially for children.

If you want to join the FSGW to take advantage of member rates, just download the membership form
    (see http://ceimd.com/php/public.php?Org=fsgw&ProgramID=1&NoTitle=1&NoCats=1)
and fill it out and send it in along with your Getaway registration and enough payment to cover everything.

The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning. One-night registration gives you all meals and snacks on either Saturday or Sunday and, if you wish, a bed on either adjacent night.

Thanks to the Linda Lieberman/David Olive Memorial Fund, scholarship help is available for those who need it. If you need full assistance, or a break on the price, contact Charlie Baum via e-mail or private message before you send in the registration. Contributions to replenish the fund are always welcomed and are tax-deductible! We hold a silent auction at the Getaway to help replenish the fund--you may wish to donate items to auction off to help others who can't afford the whole cost of the weekend.

    A Couple of Policies

There is no smoking allowed in any of the camp buildings.
The camp is run by the Methodist Church, and we are asked not to bring any alcohol.

You can see more about the new location at its website.

    Volunteer Help

We'll need volunteers to help set up on Friday, to welcome and register guests, to clean up after our Friday night potluck dinner, and to help make sure everything is in order when we check out.

In advance, we can also use help with programming. If you're interested in leading a workshop, suggesting a workshop, or organizing and scheduling events suggested by others, contact Carly Gewirz at 703-631-9655 or e-mail the Getaway Committee.

For more information please contact the 2006 Getaway Event coordinator Charles Baum, 706 Bonifant St., Silver Spring, MD 20910 (301-587-2286) or e-mail the Getaway Committee.

Please--you have to have the 'Raise the Roof' Gospel session again!

I think it has been done before--"Songs About Mother" I guess I like that idea because it can encompass such a wide range of songs and styles.

We always have at LEAST one...often two....ballads workshops. (Two of our planners are confirmed ballad aficionados). These cabins all have a little center area which would be great for late-night ballad sessions.

Thank you all for the input so far. As soon as I find out how to be in three places at once, I promise we'll do a workshop teaching that skill!

You old timey music lovers will be particularly interested to know that Joe Newberry, banjo master and southern-style singer, will be coming from North Carolina to join us. If you haven't heard Joe, let me tell you that you are in for a treat!

Also joining us this year, I am happy to report, is an old friend to FSGW, John Roberts. Some of you may know him as Tony Barrand's singing partner, or from his performances over the years in Noel Sing We Clear.

Keep the program comments coming; we really do appreciate and pay attention to your ideas and suggestions.

    See you at the Getaway!

How about a workshop for people who want to sing but are afraid. I'm thinking of the people who attend song circles and would just really love to sing something but are too nervous about singing in front of people. A workshop to encourage and help these people gain some confidence about singing in front of others - "Overcoming stage fright" or something like that.

Barry should be approached to lead a sea songs workshop, complete with capstan, pumps, and halyards, so that some of the shanties can be appropriately demonstrated. And there should be a large tub of freshly mixed grog to help get everyone in the right spirit.

Maybe Ken Schatz would be willing to give this another go as well.

I'll be sorry to miss this one but I think I'm committed to legislative campaigns at home.

    Cheerily,

Well, I keep proposing this one after the Getaway's over periodically, so I'll try doing it BEFORE the Getaway this time. How about "Guilty Pleasures" AKA "Songs Your Husband/Wife/Partner/Best Friend leaves the room if you sing them..." For me, that's my extensive collection of Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane, Randy Newman, Warren Zevon, etc. songs.

We had a hilarious late-night song swap at another gathering this year in which a lot of dyed-in-the-wool folkies were singing "Teen Angel", "Wake Up Little Susie", and most of "American Pie", among others - mostly in tune... Ferrara and I enjoyed annoying BillD by singing "Rocky Raccoon" at an FSGW Open Sing a long time ago. Then there were those Getaway concerts of yore at Camp Letts where Dave Olive (AKA Blind Harry Palms) did "Don't Play A-11" with Mark Gilston accompanying him on Bulgarian bagpipes, or Bob Hitchcock and the Cockettes did "I Got Stoned and I Missed It"...

Maybe this is the sort of thing that can only be done after midnight, but since I don't get a chance to stick around that late, maybe we could slip in an hour of non-folky songs in the afternoon?

Since the Getaway's right before the elections, how about a song swap of "Presidents, Politicians and Other Invertebrates"? I'd see this as including songs like Uncle Dave's "Wreck of the Tennessee Gravy Train", "McKinley's Been Shot Down (Jest Give Me Somethin I'm Used To)", and whatever the equivalent types of songs are from across the Pond - anti-Thatcher ballads? Disraeli Gears?

That would be worth writing or learning a few contemporary cuts for!

I second both of Mary's ideas. That woman is brilliant!

Daggum.   Just from the ideas startin' to pop out, I can see I'm in for another year of too many great choices.

    Go away, Bill.

    Julie London
(to the tune of London Julie-by Ed Silberman on San Francisco)

She had a voice like kitten fur
        Ha Ha me Julie London
She didn't sing so musch as purr
        Ha Ha me Julie London

Cho:Julie London, Julie London where did you go?
           Ha Ha me Julie London
Julie London, Julie London where did you go?
           Ha Ha me Julie London

She used to sing on the radio
But that was a long time ago

I've give a thousand pound and ten
If I could here her sing again

Thanks Ed, I'll never sing to you another gem. Hehe, nice job

Thanks for the plug, Charlie. I would love to do any kind of sea thing, maybe with Amos, he's already looking that way, or Ken.
But, the commitee can use me if & how they please, if they want. I'm aways happy to have them treat me as they will. I would do anything for them, even shut up. I've done a few things before & don't mind at all giving someone else a shot either.

Hi Joe, it's been a while, it'll be good to see you & Christina(?) again. Don't let those John Roberts CD's fool ya, he does do wop too, in secret like like me.

Was it keith & George that did a songwriting workshop before? Could they do another, maybe, please.

    How bout Ballads with choruses?

    How bout landlocked work songs?

    Occupational Songs (about work)

from Edmund's last year's suggestion list. Songs "I learned from... " For songs that you learned in person from another human being, rather than from a recording or radio or other such thing?

Songs (not work songs) from inside the prison systems, anywhere

    Whaling (by itself)

    Wagon Trains & Pioneers

Cowboys, Over Landers/Drovers & their like from other countries.

    Levee Workers & Gandy Dancers

Songs of water Transport: Lakes, Canals, River ways & Intercoastal Highways of anywhere

    Singing Jigs, Reels, hornpipes

    Child Labor(not about giving birth)songs

    Minning of any type

Songs for or about aging (not about getting old, about being old. Or both)

    No Bob Seeger songs, Mick

    Barry

Barr, do you mean the workshop in which a Songwriter "presented" as ong that they had written with a short intro and background as to how and why it was written? If so, I very much enjoyed it too, it was smashing to hear all those very talented songwriters explaining how there Muse communicated with them. I am still haunted by some of the images that the songs(and the additional insights we gained from having its background) left me with. (I will carrry the "dead cat in the road" image with me forever) I would definately support (and participate, if I may) in doing that again.

BillD, no-one said you had to attend "Guilty Pleasures" - maybe it would help get it out of our systems. And Barry and Big Mick, Bob Seger is no relation to Pete, Peggy and Mike Seeger, but would be an ideal addition to Guilty Pleasures.

Like many people, I first started singing and learning songs by singing along (in private)with the radio and my LPs. I didn't discover traditional music until college, but I never lost my love for the rock I listened to before I turned 30 - although I have to admit I haven't listened to my Blue Oyster Cult, Styx or Emerson, Lake and Palmer records lately (Brain Salad Surgery, anyone?) What's fun about this kind of song swap is the relationship between the songs and the age group of the people who choose them. I can sing along with radio hits from about 1968 to the mid-80's, with a little bit of early 60's Motown and doo-wop stuff that I learned much later in life. It really ages one when the songs you sang along with as a teenager move from the "Classic Rock" to the "Moldy Oldies" format stations, though.

My husband corrected the title of my other workshop proposal - it should be "Presidents, Politicians and other Scum-Sucking Bottom Feeders"... (the other one is just a fish...) Oh, and I had a CRS moment - that shoulda been President Garfield's Been Shot Down, not McKinley - wrong assassination.

We had a fun workshop at NEFFA one year called "Where's Willy" (the UK contingent can stop their sniggering...) - everyone sang songs about their Willie-O, Sweet William, Willy and Nancy, etc.

Another infamous pre-Halloween Getaway song swap was Mark Gilston's "Songs of Dismemberment". Mark specializes in collecting songs about severed ears, but it was appalling amazing how many different songs involve people being reduced to their constituent components.

Mary, m'love, I would love the guilty pleasures workshop. Sometimes I sneak out old songbooks and sing all that late 60's, early 70's stuff. And I enjoy it. I am working up things for a house concert, and I intend to sneak a song or two into it. You have my resounding second on your suggestion.

    Mick

I sure would like to learn how to sing harmony sometime.
Also, we can't forget the blues.

    JAB

Mary, El Greco's inspirational choir last year has given me an idea. If we do a jugband workshop this year I will insist that the "class band" perform Saturday or Sunday night (and someone else will have to be the lead singer).
