Well, well, well...

Bet you all thought this was about the upcoming election but it ain't... It's about the real stuff...

Seein' as there are some 5000 chicken houses in Page County, Va. there is also an abundance of folks willin' to drop you off 10 tons of chicken poop for free to use as a fertilzer...

So last summer I got me my first 10 ton delivery and used the front bucket on the tractor to put down half of it on the future veggie garden and then plowed it in to sit there an' do it's po thing all winter and all this past veggie season and, well, yeah, it was stinky but...

... so this year I had the other half which had been sitting as the proverbial "pile" for the last year and after the 1st bucket full I realized that there ain't nuthin' better smellin' than fresh chicken poop 'cause this stuff make a nuclean missle turn 'round an' go back home...

Sho nuff would...

Nastiest smellin' stuff I think there is... Make ya' wanta bottle up pig poop and make deoderant outta it...

Sho nuff...

But it's done and plowed in but ya' don't really want to hang 'round the veggie garden topo long...

Sho nuff don't...

Bobert

For a while (many years ago) in the north end of Everett, Washington, there was a rendering plant that was exhausting the rankest smelling fumes you can imaging. It went up in flames one night, and that greasy sucker really burned hot. They never rebuilt it, as far as I know.

That kindles a memory for me.

When I was 15 or so my dad got the offer of some chickypoop two or three miles away to spread on his fields; all we had to do was grub it out and haul it off.

So my father and a couple of brothers did the loading into two different manure spreaders. It must have gagged them because it was ripe enough from my position and I was mostly not directly involved. I remember though what it smelled like when they lifted the layers of moldy old poop; I had never smelled anything like it.

That week was where I learned to drive a tractor, a little Ford Ferguson that could make about 35 miles per hour on the road. I ran innumerable trips back and forth between the chicken farm and our place. Except for the smell I enjoyed it- not least because my brothers would far rather have had my job than theirs. That didn't happen that often. The male sex was king in my family.

Well, besides chicken shit, I've cleaned out cow, horse, sheep, pig, turkey, duck, goose, and cat shit. I have even cleaned out plugged sewer manholes. Combine all the others and they wouldn't add up to chicken shit - reverse pun intended, kinda. That stuff'll burn yer nose off.

Shoulda plowed 'er right in, Bobert. But iffen ya got any left over ya could put it in little bottles and send it to Congress so when they're on recess they won't forget the smell of politics.

That place has so much bullshit in it that they wouldn't notice the addition of a few tonnes of chicken poop.

Bobert, there ain't nothin' like chicken poop for making saltpeter. You have a gold mine there, and they'll give you the raw material fer free. You need some big ponds, that chicken poop, a lot of old pee, and some free time to stir it all up.

You can then sell the saltpeter to the local gunpowder mill or boys' school....

But not to Canadian cigarette makers. Saltpeter is no longer allowed in Canuck smokes as a safety concern.... fire safety. There is a declining market for chicken shit. Be careful where you invest your you stalks.

In England it was "The Gunpowder Plot"; in the US it will be "The Chickenshit Plot."

I seem to remember that there was a movement! to bake the gas out of that stuff for fuel. There was certainly a car that ran on it.

Just imagine a car that was running on that intestinal product aftertreated through a catalytic converter! Running on petrol they smell like a fart.

At one time, maybe even today, they made methane generators that run on chicken shit. When I was little, they ran half the busses in Japan. Or so I was told.

Here in Connecticut we have, believe it or not, egg farms. The last count I heard was 4 million birds - just setting there a-layin and a-poopin'. Well, it wasn't too bad for years, cause they would haul all that poop over to the dirt farm where they used it to make huge piles of potting soil. Turns out the potting soil was just a side business though....most of the chicken-poop-rich dirt went to a local mushroom farm. SO all was well and good, until the mushroom farm up and moved to Pennsylvania. I suspect things are getting a little backed up out in eastern CT now.

Ah, that explains it. In Salem, Oregon, there is(was?) a mushroom farm whose air on occasion wafts into downtown. Salubrious, it is not.

Us City Folk ain't got no chicken farms to de liver us free poop. I been buyin Cock-A-Doodle-Doo in bags. Works good. Also Vigoro has an organic fertilizer based on chicken feces.

I can't say much for Milorganite organic fertilizer. It is made from Milwaukee's sewage sludge. It just don't have the same punch to it.

Here in Oz a processed brand of chicken poop is called Dynamic Lifter - dunno why - probably would lift your sinuses if it wasn't processed -

The Stokenchurch cutting on the M40 motorway west out of London is known locally as 'Chickenshit Canyon'. It's a cutting through a ridge of hills, that was prone to rockfalls. The motorways agency and local authorities decided to cement the walls up, using a natural product... tons of chicken shit. I am told it was pretty steamy there for the first month or so after it had been done...
