Subject: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bobert Date: 03 Dec 06 - 08:45 PM Okay, after today dealing with both adult people and adult cats I am sittin' here with the Wes Ginny Slide Rule feverishly tryin' to figure this one out but... ...ya' know, people can be really wierd... Case in point... The P-Vine and I go to Northern Virginia for a Xmas Party of the No. Va. Azalea Society (yawn) and they have a short meetin' and spend an eternity discussing the merits of spendin' $200 to rent a digital projector for their next meeting where such a device will be needed... Problem is that the president of the group is a banker who is so rich that he lights his cigarettes with hundred dollar bills.... But this discusssion went on and on and on... Might still be going on, for all I know, seein' as we had a long drive home and left with folks still goin' at it.... So we get home and the cats have been locked up to0gether all day and they is nutso and, well, the oldest one has recently taken to wanting to sit on the P-Vine's lap at night so she asked me a few minutes ago to get him and put him on her lap... So I go to get him and he has now become a conspiracy theorist and refuses to let me anywhere near him... Meanwhile, the next youngest cat is throwin' up on our new carpet and the youngest wants to stay out in the 20 degree night??? So Iz lookin' 'round an' wonderin' jus what the heck is goin' on wid cats and peoples and wonderin' jus' how much cromozone difference there is between us???? Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Rapparee Date: 03 Dec 06 - 09:19 PM Why doesn't the group BUY such a projector (you can get 'em for as little as USD 800.00, less for used) and then they can have it anytime they need it? I vote for people. The cats would have figured that one out. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 Dec 06 - 10:29 PM Cats are unpredictable, but in a predictable fashion, while people are predictable, but in an unpredictable fashion. If the above statement makes sense to you, you are definitely weirder than your cat. |

Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Dec 06 - 10:45 PM They're both weird. This is a hard one to decide on, Bobert. Really hard. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Dec 06 - 04:15 AM Cat woman was very weird. Gnomes are perfectly sensible creatures. DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Dec 06 - 05:48 AM I nearly broke my foot on a gnome... mind you, I fell over a cat and got concussion, but only a human has put me in hospital on purpose... so I'll go with the cats. At least they keep me warm in bed at night. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 04 Dec 06 - 06:15 AM I have two black cats. It rained last night - first time for quite a while, really. Bubbles sat outside in the rain, howling because she was wet, and every attempt to fetch her caused her to run further away from the house... Too stupid to come in out of the rain: I know quite a few people like that, metaphorically speaking... |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Dec 06 - 06:32 AM Has anyone ever tried to help a cat that was stuck in the top of a tree? They do not appreciate your help and they will attempt to kill you if you offer any assistance. This is because a cat under stress trusts no one but him or herself! |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Paul from Hull Date: 04 Dec 06 - 08:19 AM I had a cat that thought he WAS people (& I have met many people who were less intelligent than him) so imagine what a bl**dy conundrum he was... |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Becca72 Date: 04 Dec 06 - 08:23 AM I would rather spend my time with my 3 cats than with most people so I'm going to have to vote on their side. They may be weird, but they're smart and funny, too. Most people are just weird. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Dec 06 - 08:59 AM Cats can be easier to negotiate with. Sometimes. But not when they are stuck in a tree or when they happen to slip and fall in the bathtub or the toilet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: SINSULL Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:02 AM I do spend more time with my four furry friends than with people. Unlike people, cats tell you exactly what is on their minds and how you can solve any problem. Of course, Freddie is pissed at me today because it is snowing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Becca72 Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:07 AM Sins...how dare you!! Allowing it to snow when Freddie wants to go outside. I cannot believe your nerve ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:09 AM Cats are forever having their patience tested by that sort of thing... ;-) They have to put up with being surrounded by idiots! |

Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:34 AM Why do people feel the need to get cats down out of trees? They can get down quite satisfactorily themselves.. as my cousin the fireman says - have you ever seen the skeleton of a cat up a tree? (Unless of course, it's been caught, killed and stored up there by the leopards). LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: mack/misophist Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:35 AM Bee-dubya-el stated it concisely and exactly: Cats are unpredictable, but in a predictable fashion, while people are predictable, but in an unpredictable fashion. Nothing more needs to be said. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: ranger1 Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:58 AM About even, I would say. Dogs, now, that's a species you can trust. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Scoville Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:22 AM Toss up. My experience has been that: 1) Animals' personalities are just as diverse as humans', and 2) Everyone is crazy in some way if you just get to know them well enough. Which applies to animals as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Wesley S Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:27 AM For the cay that upchucks - have her teeth checked out. Our cat was tossing cookies all the time. We got her teeth fixed and the problem went away. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: MMario Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:33 AM People are definately wierder then cats. Most people believe Homo Sapiens to be the dominant species on the planet. Cats *KNOW* that the feline species is the pinnacle. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bat Goddess Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:37 AM I'm pretty weird -- I spent 44 bucks Friday on cat toys, fer-pete's-sake. Just to keep our newest addition to the household felinities occupied. (There goes the grocery money...) Jazz-min is younger than our other cats and wants to romp -- constantly. Sabine hasn't figured out that the game is "I chase you, then you chase me" yet. Jazz leaps into my arms (not my lap, my ARMS) when I'm at the computer (or sitting anywhere else) -- pet me, pet me (and I do, and type with one hand, etcet etcet). She's a rescue and it's hard to believe she was a very, very sick cat a couple months ago -- she's so vivacious and with so much energy now. The cat toys are helping, though, I guess. She's even found old toys that were hidden in corners, but especially loves the ones I can hang from things, etc. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Becca72 Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:43 AM The best cat toy in the world has turned out to be the $5 laser pointer I bought. They LOVE it. I keep it in my jewelry box and every time I go near the box the kittens come a-runnin' from all directions. They even recognize the sound that the keychain part of it makes. We play for hours with that silly thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: MMario Date: 04 Dec 06 - 11:50 AM transcript from a cat's letter to a friend. yes - my servant has a new toy - it sends out a beam of light and makes this stupid idiotic spot on the wall or floor. When she pulls it out we quickly run to play with her - because who knows? she's only human and if we don't keep her occupied playing "keep the spot away" she might do something like point the laser light into her eye. Then there would be all those trips to the vet when she wouldn't be available to do her job. the things we do to keep good help. |

Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bee Date: 04 Dec 06 - 12:44 PM I'd normally say people, but this new kitten is pretty nuts. Lessee... has run full speed off the top step splat to the floor, fell in toilet trying to get at water, tore shower drain plate out and tried apparently to escape down drain, got stuck on curtain 3/4 way up picture window, is convinced he can get milk from my armpit if he tries long enough, slapped the first dog he saw in the face and then sat down six inches from the barking injured party's face... yep, nuts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: ranger1 Date: 04 Dec 06 - 03:07 PM Our moggie keeps chasing invisible bugs up the walls and then doing backflips off the walls, has fallen in the toilet more than once, went to leap onto the window sill, bounced off the window and fell into the trash can, pooping back up with a bunch of potato peelings on her head. Definitely cats. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Dec 06 - 03:25 PM Your kitten is simply doing what young animals and humans love to do, Bee...he's testing his limits. He's doing the old "Let's try this and see what happens! Way cool!" routine. ;-) This is the process by which young animals and human beings slowly work their way to adulthood...if they survive. In nature, of course, many of them don't. In your house he will most likely make it and eventually become a bored, finicky, skeptical old cat who can't decide whether or not he wants to eat the "slop" you just put in his dinner bowl now...or maybe later...or possibly not at all (*yawn*). The same form of indecision will afflict him for minutes at at time as he stands pensively in the doorway, deciding whether or not to go out or stay in, while all the heat in the house pours out into the cold December night... |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bernard Date: 04 Dec 06 - 04:23 PM I have a fridge magnet that says 'If you want the best seat in the house, you'll have to move the cat first!'... Two urban myths: Cats always land on their feet... Bread always lands butter side down... So what happens if we strap sufficient slices of bread, butter side up, to a cat's back and drop it from a first floor window. Will it hover instead of hitting the ground?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 04 Dec 06 - 04:26 PM Cats are people, and so are humans. I know you might get some snooty cats who would object to that, but that's just snobbery. All decent cats are quite willing to accept that human beings count as people too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Scoville Date: 04 Dec 06 - 05:29 PM Cat people are weirdest of all. I had a cat that answered the telephone. My brother has a cat that has an obsession with doors (pries open cabinet doors. Will lie for hours on its back in front of the refrigerator with its paws hooked under the bottom of the door). I had a feline coworker who liked to ride wheeled office chairs (put the cat on, give the chair a push, watch them go sailing across the room. Cat loved it). My grandmother's Abyssinian--those are especially weird--only liked toy chipmunks. Do you know how hard it is to find a decent toy chipmunk?? Plain old mice just wouldn't do. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bernard Date: 04 Dec 06 - 05:45 PM Humans are merely provided as entertainment for cats... My cat used to love to be carried around the house in a plastic carrier bag. If I left a bag on the floor, she'd climb inside and mew piteously until I picked it up with her inside! |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: GUEST,lox Date: 04 Dec 06 - 05:48 PM Cat's provide us with an essential service. The Catograph, or Kittymeter works as follows. The wierdness of peope can be measured by how many cats they have. My friends and I have been known to apply the term "he/she's the full ten cats" of somebody totally doolally. Only in the most extreme and rare of circumstances though of course! |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Dec 06 - 06:18 PM I'm on a 4 scale then.... and one of them isn't even mine, he just lives here! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Dec 06 - 06:33 PM The one that likes opening doors is obviously very curious about what is in there. Most cats can't be bothered, so I'm guessing that that is a smarter than average cat. Its interest in opening the refrigerator is very easily explained! Good things to eat in there. All dogs would like to open the refrigerator too, but they have no idea how. They think it's magic when people do it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Joe_F Date: 04 Dec 06 - 08:47 PM The difference between cats & people is that cats know what people are for. "Cats look down on us. Dogs look up to us. Pigs treat us as equals." -- Winston Churchill. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: GUEST,Scoville Date: 04 Dec 06 - 08:54 PM He's an exceptionally smart cat. Seriously. He's actually sort of a pain in the ass because he's hard to discipline, because he tests all deterrents until he figures out how to get around them. I've got a smart dog, too. It wouldn't take me long to teach her to open doors, except that then I wouldn't be able to stop her from raiding the cabinets. Really, she would have made a great service dog if she weren't so self-interested. I worry more about what she might learn in spite of me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Adrianel Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:02 PM Bee: If you haven't already come across it, read Frederik Pohl's "Space Time for Springers", a delightful story about an adolescent cat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bee Date: 04 Dec 06 - 09:46 PM I'll check it out: as an adolescent I regularly buried my nose in Ace Doubles and 45 cent sf novels, which included lots of Pohl's, but I don't recall that one. This boy isn't my first kitten by any means, but he is the most aggressive and fearless of them all. But he's got a wicked cute tabby face. He's presently in the bathroom sink playing with a tiny stream of water I turned on for him: only way I could spend a few minutes typing! |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 05 Dec 06 - 07:38 AM Bee - he sounds like a Van.... they LOVE water... especially moving water. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Becca72 Date: 05 Dec 06 - 08:12 AM My two kittens also love water. They jump in the shower and wait eagerly for me to turn it on. They play in the bathroom sink while I get ready for work, and we have a lovely game of "rubber ducks" which as you can probably guess is when I fill the kitchen sink with water and float a couple of rubber duck for them to bat around. I can't use a spray bottle as punishment anymore, because they actually enjoy being squirted... |

Subject: RE: BS: Who's Weirder??? Cats or People???... From: Bee Date: 05 Dec 06 - 05:29 PM Well, you appear to be a Cats people, so you must be doubly weird. ;-D We had a nor'easter last night, 15cm of snow, first we've had. Took kitty out with me to observe his first snow while I shovelled. He spent a good half hour playing football with a chunk of snow-crust, then took off after the full-grown wild rabbit that frequents our backyard. It was far too fast for his 11 week old legs, and he stopped short at the edge of the woods, thankfully. I wasn't up for bushwhacking through to find him! |
