At the pediatrician's office the other day, a four year old said repeatedly "the sun is being naughty".

I told the parents that in one sense he is correct.
The sun's behavior should be at a minimum now but it instead is behaving as if it is in an extreme maximum.

http://blog.hasslberger.com/2006/12/major_solar_eruption_little_co.html

The coronal mass ejections can go any direction. If a maximum flare hits Earth dead on, one could see Auroras as far south as Virginia.

Aha!!! LOL So that's why our phone lines are f*cked up. We keep getting static and bleed over from our company phone on our home phone line. I thought it was a result of major power and phone outages and wind and snowstorms here. Maybe not....

Yeah it could be the extreme magnetism that hit us this week but not related to the killer flare that went the other way.

When I laid in the sun with my lids closed yesterday I got an unusually intense purple blue after image. The golds were really super too. What can I say , I'm a color junkie.

I wonder if the sun swallowed something really big from behind where we could not see it hit, would it get indigestion?

If you go further down the page it all gets discredited though.

X9 isn't very big apparently, compared to the X28 which occurred on november 4th 2003. I don't remember much changing on that day.

I was my birthday funnily enough - I can't even remember the party much ... though scientifically speaking that's probably not the most reliable information ... ='p

As far as the auroras being visible "in the northern United States" is concerned, they have been visible in the past as far south as Georgia. Not common, of course, but not at all unprecedented.

If the Geomagnetic field keeps weakening at its present rate, the whole world will be seeing the aurora, which although pretty would present a few difficulties, even without a CME.

Of course we don't know if it's a short term blip in the data, which doesn't go back very far directly, and I've not heard about any techniques to establish the strength of the magnetic field from enviromental records, or the start of a full magnetic pole inversion...

Its about 10% down from 200 years ago and accelerating downward.
We are almost 300,000 years overdue for a pole reversal.
IT commonly flips every 200,000 years.

But the point about the sun is that it is way overactive for its minimum cycle. One would expect the recent activity to happen during the maximum.

Within the last week, the great website called ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY featured a short video of the huge Earth size sunspot that erupted and sent out a tsunami shock wave that could be seen encircling the entire sun. It's a great site and I highly recommend it. Our radio reception has been poor ever since.

My Grandson is often naughty. But we usually forgive him 'cos he's only seventeen months old.

My point being, FT, when one sees the lights in Antarctica- hey, I just caught on that Rowan was being facetious. Sorry.
