Not only did all of you vote for more troops, you voted to reinstate the military draft!

Only your El Presidente isn't calling it a "draft" per se...

Just an "expansion of the military" or "increase our troops" or...

Why you ask? Well, here is what El Presidente has to say to that:

"The reason why is, it is a accurate reflection that this ideological war we're in is going to last for a while, and that we're going to need a military that's capable of being able to sustain our efforts and to help us achieve peace."

There you have it folks. Straight from El Presidente's mouth, hot off the press, and all that.

Don't be silly, ANON.GUEST. The Army is now about 60% the size it was when the Berlin Wall came down. It decreased because the perceived need was for a smaller force, and it can increase in the same deliberate way through a gradual increase in recruiting and training. The proposal is for an increase of 7,000 troops per year over the next 10 years (which is something like 1.5% increase each year), which hardly requires something as drastic as the draft.

El Presidente didn't give any specific details. Nor will he, until closer to the swearing in of our next Congress.

The Pentagon has said the Army is broken. So has Colin Powell, et al.

What you are conveniently setting aside is the fact that the decrease in military force size during peace time does not equal the "growing" (as El Presidente also referred to it) of a larger military force during wartime.

BTW, what "proposal" are you talking about?

Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services (SASC) airland subcommittee, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), a SASC member, and Reps. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.), both members of the House Armed Services committee.

No where did I see the word "Draft" in the bills considered nor in the speach & "We All" didn't vote " & those "WE" that did vote didn't "All" vote the same way, though those that voted & put a new majority in were making a statement about the war & that was to get it over & get out, not for more troops. If that's how you want to misread it like the republicans go right ahead.

The lame duck is starting to limp, soon he won't be able to keep any of his ducklings in a row.

Bush could have done it on September 12, 2001. He might have been able to do so in 2002, possibly even in 2003. But not no, not now.

What I meant to say was "grow our troops".

You see, El Presidente was interviewed today by the Washington Post, and said he was going to "expand the military" and "increase troops worldwide" and oversee a "troop surge" by giving us the "double down".

This is in the wake of last summers "mini-surge" in troop strengths in Iraq.

This is in addition to extending indefinitely the combat tours of troops finishing their second or third deployments to Iraq, accelerating the deployment of replacement divisions and brigades by cutting their time at home short of the promised 12 months, and tapping even more National Guard and Reserve troops.

Now, the problem with all that extending, accelerating, and redeploying is you aren't "growing troops".

Now, you can try and grow some troops by increasing recruitment quotas. Yes indeed, you can. But that has proven to be a pretty slow and painful process for the troops on their 3rd deployment...

Yessirrreee, those dark princes of Neoconland have a whole new PR campaign already up and running to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

Grow the troops. Expand the military. Don't call it a draft, because like 70% of the American people oppose the idea.

But we're gonna grow more troops. You just wait and see!

the notion that george could not effect this is probably right. the problem is, the US should have national service, with military one of the options. without unwilling participants, there is little countervailing internal opinion inside the military on the lunacy of war. I will agree with every objection that everyone raises, and probably still feel that national service is on balance a sensible idea. carter b

Congress, at the request of El Presidente did. "Temporarily" increased Army troop strength by 30,000--from 484,000 to 514,000. Army now wants 514,000 to be the "floor, not the ceiling" and to make it permanent. They are currently recommending "growing" to 540,000--just fer starters.

As Little Hawk says, the empire must grow or die. The problem, as the British discovered, is that the more you grow, the more you find trouble which has to be dealt with, and so it goes until exhaustion.   The one solution empires seem unable to deal with until catastrophe is to just GO HOME!!

Lieberman was not re elected because of being a hawk. That was his only flaw. He was re elected because he is a well known very effective democrat. Only the "one issue" voters voted against him.
