Subject: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 07:39 PM Not only did all of you vote for more troops, you voted to reinstate the military draft! Only your El Presidente isn't calling it a "draft" per se... Just an "expansion of the military" or "increase our troops" or... Why you ask? Well, here is what El Presidente has to say to that: "The reason why is, it is a accurate reflection that this ideological war we're in is going to last for a while, and that we're going to need a military that's capable of being able to sustain our efforts and to help us achieve peace." There you have it folks. Straight from El Presidente's mouth, hot off the press, and all that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: artbrooks Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:02 PM Don't be silly, ANON.GUEST. The Army is now about 60% the size it was when the Berlin Wall came down. It decreased because the perceived need was for a smaller force, and it can increase in the same deliberate way through a gradual increase in recruiting and training. The proposal is for an increase of 7,000 troops per year over the next 10 years (which is something like 1.5% increase each year), which hardly requires something as drastic as the draft. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:06 PM You didn't read the link, did you artbrooks? El Presidente didn't give any specific details. Nor will he, until closer to the swearing in of our next Congress. The Pentagon has said the Army is broken. So has Colin Powell, et al. What you are conveniently setting aside is the fact that the decrease in military force size during peace time does not equal the "growing" (as El Presidente also referred to it) of a larger military force during wartime. BTW, what "proposal" are you talking about? |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:14 PM And also, let us not forget who introduced that legislation called the United States Army Relief Act of 2005 : Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services (SASC) airland subcommittee, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), a SASC member, and Reps. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.), both members of the House Armed Services committee. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Bobert Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:22 PM Well!!! I'm gonna go out and burn my draft card tonight... (But, bobert, didn't you burn it back in '69???) Nevermind... |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: artbrooks Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:28 PM ANON.GUEST, I was referring to General Schoomaker's proposal.

Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:33 PM The link didn't work for me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Barry Finn Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:38 PM No where did I see the word "Draft" in the bills considered nor in the speach & "We All" didn't vote " & those "WE" that did vote didn't "All" vote the same way, though those that voted & put a new majority in were making a statement about the war & that was to get it over & get out, not for more troops. If that's how you want to misread it like the republicans go right ahead. The lame duck is starting to limp, soon he won't be able to keep any of his ducklings in a row. Barry |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:43 PM The word "draft" will never be used by politicians or their huckster media. "National service" is what's coming. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST,The Dreaded Anti-Guest Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:51 PM The hysteria just never let's up, does it, GUEST. Amazing! |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:54 PM Who is this "all of you" person? Over 90% of the US citizens who frequent this forum wouldn't vote for George W. Bush for ratcatcher. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Dec 06 - 08:58 PM The Empire never lets up either. ;-) Just ask the Gauls, the Helvetii, the Nervii, the Britons, the Germanii, the Egyptians, the Numidians, the Carthaginians, the Macedonians, the Judeans, the Dacians, the...oh, you know, all those smaller places that are destined to one day be a footnote in Manifest Destiny of Greater Rome. The Empire NEEDS its legions. Those who stand in the way shall be cut down like wheat, ripe for the threshing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Ebbie Date: 19 Dec 06 - 09:07 PM There is nothing new or startling in his language in that interview. Other than every time I hear him speak I am startled anew. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Teribus Date: 19 Dec 06 - 09:54 PM OK GUEST 19 Dec 06 - 07:39 PM So the USA is going to reinstate the Draft as you say. If it doesn't you will pay me 50% of your yearly salary for the rest of your life - Agreed??? I will send you my bank details as soon as you agree to this. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Rapparee Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:02 PM And I'll betcha the other half. I might not agree with Teribus on much, but I do on this. Bush could have done it on September 12, 2001. He might have been able to do so in 2002, possibly even in 2003. But not no, not now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:21 PM Did I say "draft"? How silly of me! What I meant to say was "grow our troops". You see, El Presidente was interviewed today by the Washington Post, and said he was going to "expand the military" and "increase troops worldwide" and oversee a "troop surge" by giving us the "double down". This is in the wake of last summers "mini-surge" in troop strengths in Iraq. This is in addition to extending indefinitely the combat tours of troops finishing their second or third deployments to Iraq, accelerating the deployment of replacement divisions and brigades by cutting their time at home short of the promised 12 months, and tapping even more National Guard and Reserve troops. Now, the problem with all that extending, accelerating, and redeploying is you aren't "growing troops". Now, you can try and grow some troops by increasing recruitment quotas. Yes indeed, you can. But that has proven to be a pretty slow and painful process for the troops on their 3rd deployment... Yessirrreee, those dark princes of Neoconland have a whole new PR campaign already up and running to pull the wool over everyone's eyes. Grow the troops. Expand the military. Don't call it a draft, because like 70% of the American people oppose the idea. But we're gonna grow more troops. You just wait and see! |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:27 PM Now, El Presidente said he just wanted to grow more Army and Marine troops. Looks like we've got plenty of GO NAVY! troops to spare. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: iancarterb Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:29 PM the notion that george could not effect this is probably right. the problem is, the US should have national service, with military one of the options. without unwilling participants, there is little countervailing internal opinion inside the military on the lunacy of war. I will agree with every objection that everyone raises, and probably still feel that national service is on balance a sensible idea. carter b |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:45 PM Teribus, it is not a good idea to send people on the Internet all your bank details! In gratitude for my passing on this vital tip, I hope and expect that you will send ME an appropriate sum...say $300...in return for my valuable advice. I'm not going to give you my bank details. Just send it to "Little Hawk - General Delivery", Coldwater, Ontario, Canada. Cash please, in small denominations. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 10:58 PM Of course El Presidente won't reinstate the draft. We know this, because that is what he said. And we all know El Dub don't lie. He wouldn't lie to us about reinstating the draft, now would he? Of course not! He our El Presidente. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 06 - 11:18 PM "Bush could have done it on September 12, 2001." Congress, at the request of El Presidente did. "Temporarily" increased Army troop strength by 30,000--from 484,000 to 514,000. Army now wants 514,000 to be the "floor, not the ceiling" and to make it permanent. They are currently recommending "growing" to 540,000--just fer starters. Source: NY Times 12/20/06 "President Wants to Increase Size of Armed Forces" |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: Peter T. Date: 20 Dec 06 - 06:20 AM As Little Hawk says, the empire must grow or die. The problem, as the British discovered, is that the more you grow, the more you find trouble which has to be dealt with, and so it goes until exhaustion. The one solution empires seem unable to deal with until catastrophe is to just GO HOME!! yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: GUEST Date: 20 Dec 06 - 07:44 AM Note to self: Dem Hawk Joe Lieberman was re-elected handily. |
Subject: RE: BS: Here comes the US military draft! From: kendall Date: 20 Dec 06 - 10:52 AM Lieberman was not re elected because of being a hawk. That was his only flaw. He was re elected because he is a well known very effective democrat. Only the "one issue" voters voted against him. |
