It's interesting, but at the same time scary, all of the Democrats who are throwing their hats into the ring two years out. The Republicans are holding their tongues for a while, because of the train-wreck that is happening in Washington before our eyes. That is probably going to be good for them, and is something the Democrats would have done well to observe. Bush is only going to get worse, and as his own worst enemy now, there is nothing Democrats can do that will make him look worse. So why spend the politcal capital before they need to? Why become a hackneyed candidate, a joke, over the next year? They should try to stay fresh and come in strong next year.

I am sorry that there is apparently no strategy to nurture and pool talent and not use the shotgun approach to the 2009 election. Throw out a bunch of candidates and see who can survive two years in rough waters. Geez.

The political threads are starting here. I'm an ardent liberal Democrat, but I'm not interested in two years of watching these folks in the bare knuckled slugfest to come. So I probably won't be participating in the political threads. Full disclosure--I will state that while I like Obama, he's a young man and has little experience. He should have waited a few years to gain more experience instead of letting everyone push him into this idiocy now. Hillary has been around for a while and will pace herself, as will Edwards. I wish Gore would run, but he won't. The others are there for the crumbs. I'll probably feel the same in two-years, so I'm not going to get crazy about it now.

I agree with you, Sage. On the other hand I would imagine that in the next 6 months a great many of the candidates will have withdrawn.

I too wish Gore would run- I'd vote for him in a heartbeat. As it is, I would go for Edwards. I like what the man says.

Edwards is a trial lawyer, and didn't he fail to get reelected in his home state? Same with Gore.

Kendall--

There have been lots of lawyer presidents. Hillary is also a lawyer--not that it seems a positive with her.

But, by the way, what was Lincoln's profession?

Maybe those two will slug it out -- having started too early -- costing them whatever credibility they had as candidates...

...and then, in timely fashion, a real candidate will step up, take the nomination by surprise and the nation by storm and lead us where we need to go.

A candidate like Evan Bayh.

But I'll like all of them better in a year's time.

Though if this would take Iraq off of the front pages and from the chronic lead story position in the broadcast news. . . nah, still wouldn't go for it. . . but that is something else I'm really really sick of. It's like the rest of the world contracted into a pucker beside the US and Iraq. So little news of anything else gets through. Politics and war. I'm sick of it.

I'm going to start planning my spring garden. After all of our rain it will be a good year for a one. My neighbor across the road has a tiller I can borrow later on. I have a red white and blue patch in my front garden, that's the extent of my overt politics for now.

Starting early is more about raising money than anything else. If I don't announce early, someone else will get the big donations I need to battle the OTHER party.

It doesn't always work that way, but they are scared NOT to get a head start.

I'd LOVE to see a totally different selection process, where money is less of a factor and in which certain states didn't affect the entire way campaigns are run....and no formal campaigning until Summer before the election. Fat chance, huh?

Hillary is already digging up the dirt on Barack Husein Obama. Business ties to Muslims, Muslim heritage, Muslim schooling Etc.

I wouldn't bet any money on him.

The Only Democrat I would vote for is Stenny Hoyer, If he ever runs.

**Hilary** is not "digging up the dirt" on anyone. There are plenty of dirty operatives digging dirt on EVERYONE....it's a stupid way to decide important jobs. YOU, Dickey, seem to have been the first, and so far, only, one to say things like that about Obama here.

Nothing wrong with reaching across the aisle, Dickey. Treating Muslims like equals. What a terrible crime...;^) Might be just what the doctor ordered, for a more restful sleep... for billions of people.

Why would Muslim heritage and ties to Muslims be "dirt"? I rather think those could be advantages; it would do no harm at all to his international cred, and indeed to his national one.

So, what else is anyone doing that doesn't have to do with politics? That was kind of the point. My disclaimer seems to have distracted from where I was going with this. Isn't anyone else sick of this and looking for fresh ideas, good news, or something to keep your brain from stagnating?

TTR, are you writing poetry? Bill, are you making new bowls? Me, I'm gardening and finished tile in my house. And I'll play music rather that talk radio, even some of my NPR, because I want to let something other than war and politics drifting through my head some of the time.

Well, Bob (Deckman) and I are putting together a concert program for this coming fall and plan on doing a house concert or three. Figuring on fall should give us enough time to get our socks pulled up, re-up a bunch of the stuff we used to do, and a bunch of new stuff.

I know Bob is putting a CD together, and I'm thinkin' along the same lines. Neither of us have any records out, and as Dave Van Ronk said, "in vinyl veritas." I've got a lot of good stuff and I'd like to get some of it recorded before I topple off the twig.

I've done some recording, but only one band (from a tape of one of the Sunday afternoon U. N. Pavilion concerts at the Seattle World's Fair) ever hit vinyl. Bob's on that record too. There are several copies of the record floating around, but I think the only one that ever actually sold was to a very myopic Italian gentleman with no taste buds, and he thought it was a licorice pizza.

I bug my senators and representative constantly and attend precinct caucuses when they occur and talk politics a lot. But I can't clean up that pig's breakfast in Washington, D. C. all by myself.

My main activities are music, writing, and teaching.

Well, Dickey, you just lost any credibility you might have had.

"Hillary is already digging up the dirt on Barack Husein Obama. Business ties to Muslims, Muslim heritage, Muslim schooling Etc."

Whats your source?

Besides that, perhaps we need someone who has a better understanding of the Muslim world. The biggest reason for the failure of Middle East foreign policy is that our current politicians do not know who or what they are dealing with.

Hey, Don! I have that record also! hehehe. . .

That's a good idea, though. I could dedicate myself to putting X number of Dad's cassette tapes a month onto CDs during this prolonged political season. Listen to those tapes, transcribe the words, list performers, work carefully and that would be good for blocking out a whole bunch of nonsense!

Decided to learn to play fiddle tunes fingerstyle. Not many doing it and it's a challenge.

Writing bunches of stuff for submission to Clay Times.

Not to fear, SRS...

Because Bush has screwed up so badly (yet again...) there is a certain amount of anxiety in the electorate and so the Dems are just doing what is politically expedient in tryin' to get the weaker horses outta the race so that 3 or 4 can clearly focus on not only Bush's failures but their respective agendas which I doubt will be too different from the others left in the race...

Face it... the American people feel robbed by the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections and so they are eager to set that period of history behind them... The Dems know this and are doing what represents some hope that thibngs won't be as messed up as they are today forever...

Not that I have any serious belief that the Dems have proven that they can rise to the occasion but, hey, we'll see...

No mattter, it's ggod politics...

Tarheel has a good point. Republicans are much better at staying in line and marching to the approved tune than Democrats are.

But as for mudslinging, honestly, Tarheel, just look at what has happened to the very word "liberal" in the last eight years if you want to see some mud-slinging. (Mud is too kind a word for what some of these neocons throw around, to be frank).

Bobert can perk up and address this now, but he has acreage and a huge garden to tend spring, summer, and fall. He has tons of ripe tomatoes and raspberries and carrots and okra to look forward to. We know Bobert doesn't have to fool around with political threads! He'll have a great excuse for ignoring lots of things.

SRS (who is putting in a garden this year after a rainy January sets the stage for tomato fecundity and broccoli bliss)
