Please note: I absolutely was NOT looking for anything like this.

Curiosity did intrude, and I find there's a nice picture of Mr Rose playing a fence (with an … … accomplice) at his jon rose web home page.

CDs available, I think.

I guess he's an Aussie?

There are um...sound samples for each CD if you click on discography, then choose one, then click on the real fiddle icon. Can't say much about the ones I tried except *yuck*..more meaningless avant garde crap.

I'm not sure it's the same guy, but an Aussie has been 'playing' telephone wires and fences for years - CDs around too I believe.

I dunno about telephone wires and fences, but we have this guy in Oz - Linsey Pollak. He is amazingly talented and makes instruments - particularly wind instruments out of all sorts of common household objects - such as the Watering Can Clarinet, the Carrot-flute, the Garden Hose Panpipes, the Chair-flute, and the Rubber Glove Bagpipes.

His website is well worth looking at (and listening to). These instruments are not just a gimmick. If you listen to samples of some of them here they sound quite beautiful!

Hey youse guys. Remember that the acoustic guitar and the banjo are not in their original form either and required experimentation to reach their present forms.

Why is it that folkies tend to be so conservative when many are accused of being "radicals"?

The violin can now be electrified and sounds pretty good going through a Barbera pickup.
It's a different instrument from the accoustic violin, though and should be treated as such.
