Just watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show tonight and it makes me wonder about dog songs. Other than the one with the lyrics Me and You and a Dog Named Boo, and B-I-N-G-O can't think of other dog songs, but no doubt you guys can. Was there ever one written about Balto for instance?

Don't we already have a thread about dog songs? I seem to recall posting some titles, such as Spike Jones's "Our Hour (The Puppy Love Song)" and the kids' song "I Wanna Be a Dog."

A Pacific Northwest singer-songwriter named Bill Imhoff (I think he's the one) has a hilarious song called "Dog At The Wheel," and a wonderful Portland musician and songwriter named Lon Jones wrote and recorded a great one called "When Dogs Dream."

There's also:
Old Blue
Old Dog Tray
B-I-N-G-O
They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dawg Aroun'
O Where, O Where Has My Little Dog Gone? [DER DEITCHER'S DOG]

Plus there are the parodies, such as "I'm Looking Over My Dead Dog Rover."

You walking down my street now. There are a lot of traditional songs which will certainly come to mind: Here are a couple for starters:

Old Blue
They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dawg Aroun'

And then there are a ton of songs that mention dogs:

My Dog's Bigger Than Your Dog, by Tom Paxton

And probably another ton of songs more recently written that are either about dogs, or have a dog as a central character in the story. I used to kid around that I could do a whole workshop on songs about dogs. Here are three that I've written and recorded. I'm sure other songwriters can add their own songs to the list.

Rosco..
Rough and Ready..
Taste Of Sin ..

From: bobad

OLD BLUE [also here]
Traditional, Arranged and Adapted by Roger McGuinn

Well I had an old dog and his name was Blue
Yes, I had an old dog and his name was Blue
Well I had an old dog and his name was Blue
Bet ya five dollars he's a good dog too

Old Blue chased a possum up a holler (hollow) limb
Blue chased a possum up a holler limb
Blue chased a possum up a holler limb
The possum growled, Blue whined at him

Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you

When old Blue died he died so hard
He shook the ground in my back yard
We lowered him down with a golden chain
And every link we called his name

Bye bye Blue You good dog you
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you

My old Blue he was a good old hound
You'd hear him hollering miles around
When I get to Heaven first thing I'll do
I'll grab my horn and call for Blue

Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you

The Littlest Hobo (from the TV Canadian Series)

I find adventure everywhere,
And friends with whom I'd like to share.

This is my stop along the way.
Don't really know how long I'll stay.

Stop over. The world is my friend.
Stop over along the road without end.

Traveling around from town to town.
Sometimes I think I'll settle down.

But I know I'd hunger to be free.
Rovin' is the only life for me.

A-driftin'. The world is my friend.
I'm travelin' along the road without end.

Here's the best I can do to recall the Pedigree ad that's made me cry every single time I've seen it. It was just on, again, and it ought to be a song. It's a short one, about 15 seconds, but it doesn't seem to go by fast.

All the camera shots are beautifully-shot closeups of expressive dogs' faces, one at a time, as they look up from their pens at a shelter with those intelligent, hopeful, wise eyes. Mutts, with that dignity so many of them have.

During the series of shots, the voiceover [a man speaking the dogs' thoughts]:

I know how to sit...., lie down...., and roll over.... .
I don't know what I'm doing here....
But I know that I am a Good Dog...,
And I just want to go home.

And then the Pedigree logo comes up and there's a brief reminder that with every purchase, they make a donation to support dog shelters.

That really ought to be a song.

~Susan

Here's a link for Chicken In The Bread Tray {Auntie Will Your DOg Bite}

http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/master/chickeninthebread.html

I found a fragment of that song in Dorothy Scarborough's 1925 book "On The Trail Of Negro Folk Songs" . Scaborough introduces this fragment by writing "Of course every Southerner knows:
Chickens in de bread tray
Scratchin' out de dough.
Grannie,will your dog bite?"
No, Chile, no!
Grannie,will your dog bite?"
No, Chile, no!"

-snip-

I found a more complete version of this song in Thomas W. Talley's 1922 book "Negro Folk Songs" :

"Auntie, will your dog bite"-
"No, Chile, No!"
Chicken in de bread tray'
A makin'up dough.

"Auntie will your broom hit?"-
"Yes, Child" pop!
Chicken in de bread tray;
"Flop! Flop! Flop!"

"Auntie, will yo' oven bake?"-
"Yes, Jes fry!"-
"What's dat chicken good frer?"-
"Pie! Pie! Pie!"

"Auntie, is yo' pie good?"
"Good as you could 'spec'".
Chicken in de bread tray;
"Peck! Peck! Peck!"

When my other half was younger and used to race motorbikes (they always won!) the evening before the race we would all go to the pub and would end up singing. There was one chap who also used to race who sang a song the words for which escape me excepting the fist 2 lines:

I Have a Dog, His Name Is Rover
And when he s!*ts he s!*ts all over.......

Dead dog cyder is another one

How about Burn's classic :Lassie with the lint white locks!
