First, thanks to everyone who sent hugs, support, PMs, e-mails, peoms, stories and advice when Clancy died. It really meant a lot to Jason and me to have that. He was a wonderful dog and we miss him. We miss him so much, that we started looking two weeks ago for another canine companion. As of yesterday, our application to adopt Bandit has been approved and we will pick him up next Saturday when the next transport from Tennessee comes to New England. My gramma always said the best thing to do to honor your dog is to get another one. Thanks for the advice, Gramma!

Tami, I'm happy for you and Jason that you'll be getting a new four-legged companion again. He sounds like a really sweet guy (and he looks cute, too), I'm sure you deserve one another.

A big hug from this side of the Great Pond.

Best wishes,

Bente (and dachshund Milloup)

Tami, that's great, and he looks like a real sweetie. I can't wait to meet the new pack member! He'll know Clancy a little. His scent is still around. When/if you bring Bandit to Mary's, he'll know it's a good place because it will smell like you and Clancy, and maybe Jason, and those smells are 'home' smells.

He is a lucky dog--but that does seem to be a lot of work to get an animal? Aren't there dogs in New England also needing to be adopted? What was the attraction to a program in Tennessee? I'm just curious.

I'd never heard of the PetFinder site before this. What a great idea! It looks like any shelter can list their adoptees so there are loads more animals a person can choose from. Like a a job-finder site or a dating agency.

Petfinder is a great site in many ways - just steer clear of most of the forums. There are hundreds of people posting there who definitely have sad-eyed puppy paintings on velvet hanging in their living rooms, and more than a few of them have no.sense.of.humour.at.all.

So yer saying they wouldn't find the Larsen cartoon (dog in car telling dog friend outside that first he's going shopping, then he's going to the vets to be tutored)--yer really saying those folks on that site wouldn't find that funny, right?

(Sorry for the Drift, Ranger1. I just need some clarification here.)

That would likely be accurate. (I miss Larsen... and Kliban.. and Gahan Wilson...)

To be fair, some very informed people post in the petcare forum. It's the general and animal forums that get weird.

Hey all, thanks for the good wishes. We had some real specific needs in a dog that none of the dogs in the local shelters met. For example, the only dog in the Portland shelter last week was a pitbull. And, much as I do love the breed, my renter's insurance would have had a serious issue with it, not to mention my landlord. Getting the whole combination of good with cats, little kids and other dogs is tough. Bandit fits all three criteria, and well, we're suckers for generic yellow dogs, what can I say? And it kind of worked out like Spaw said...

I only know personally, two Pit Bulls, and they are both very loving animals. The reason, their OWNERS are the same way. It's not the breed, it's the idiots who need this sort of dog to feel like men, so they make them mean.

I told myself a half dozen times after various pets died that I'd never get another. Then some ugly stray would wander over, or some ratty starving thing would limp into view, or, or, or. I have rarely carried a gun so shooting the damned things was out. So, OK, ONE meal and hit the road. OK, you can stay the night, but tomorrow you go to the SPCA. OK, I don't have time to get you there just now, BUT, don't think you're staying for long. Then someone says, "Hey, man, that dog is UGly." (Yeah, but you say that again and he'll chomp yer parts for ya.) Then a few weeks have passed and he's learned not to piss on the floor, fetch a sock, be nice to folks. Then the fu#kin' thing is there seven years later and ya wonder how you ever lived without him. He's the dog that was seen humping a fire hydrant a few blocks away, and you find out that he's knocked up someone's pedigree poodle and the owners are pissed off, and he shows up after being 'out' for two days--no doubt knocking up someone ELSE'S pedigree poodle (or fire hydrant)--and he smells like he's been rolling in dead fish, and lo, he HAS been rolling in dead fish. He knows what the word 'bath' means, and catching him is a chore and a half. The same damned dog that doesn't understand 'sit', 'come' (in the sense of over here. He obviously knew what it meant when it involved pedigree poodles fer krissake) or 'stay' has a handle on soap, bath, tub. Sheesh. Anyway, never again. Never. Absolutely NEVer. Period. And that's final. I am NOT kidding.

Ranger1, let us know your first impressions of him when he arrives in your life. ALL of the dogs that I have rescued understood very quickly the bond between us.

Including the dog that I stilll miss even after she's been gone more than 30 years. My sister in law showed up at my door one day with a poodle; my sis had driven 60 miles because she was sure I would take her sight unseen; the dog's previous owner could no longer keep her.

About 3 hours later when she left, the dog was nowhere to be seen and didn't come out of hiding until she was gone. I had that dog for more than 13 years.

Keep your fingers crossed for good weather for Friday and Saturday for me. I don't want to prolong the wait for our new canine any more than is necessary! There is a storm predicted and I'm hoping it just peters out or goes out to sea and doesn't affect anything between Tennessee and Maine!

Great news! ITs good to hear good news.

bad news...
Kendall there is a little truth to your theory.
But the big truth is that a pit bull from a loving family is far more likely to devour an infant if left alone in the house together , than a more gentle breed.

Any dog will bite given the right circumstance...I have only known 2 pitbulls personally and they were both very stupid and very gentle.

the only dog that ever bit me in malice was a white german shepard who later went nuts and attacked his owner.   My sister's bassett hound came close, but he was very old and I believe I'd made a snide remark about his odor... :-)

I've never been bitten by a dog. Many times by cats as my bout with Cat Scaratch Fever proved.

My first thought when I heard antoher storm was brewing was "Oh no! Bandit is driving up in here in that mess!" Priorities...

He may as well get used to the weather now I guess.

I was bitten by several dogs as a child, one because she had puppies and was a little 'off', I think; one because it was a congenitally insane pooch that bit everybody, and one because it was an untrained herding dog. Only the insane one bit hard and drew blood. I was understandably wary of dogs for many years, but was converted to doggie adoration by an overwhelming number of good dogs.

But the worst dog bite I've ever seen was made by a small pitbull. He bit the room-mate of his owner, on the face, with no warning, just a sudden leap. The poor man was just walking up a stairs. His face required 47 stitches. In Halifax, there is a segment of society that has pitbulls. They are generally not pleasant people, and are often criminals as well. The same kind of people had Rottweilers before that, and Dobermans before that, and German Shepherds before that.

I firmly believe that you are taking a risk if you acquire the fashionable 'dangerous breed' of the day, because it is very likely that you will get the genetic descendant of poorly bred and badly cared for dogs, unless you are very, very careful about choosing a breeder.

Thirty years ago, you couldn't have paid me to walk near a Doberman. Today, I think the breed has recovered from its phase as a fashionably 'mean dog', and I would have one in my house without hesitation. Same goes for shepherds, and I think Rotties are likely recovering. But I wouldn't at this time trust any North American bred Pitbull type dog.

I think the only time I was bitten it was by some little yappy thing - fortunately too small to do significant damage.

Of course, I should have been bitten when I jumped in to rescue my little dog from a usually mellow very large shepherd that had suddenly attacked him - no idea why I didn't get seriously hurt. Learned later that the shepherd had just returned from doing stud duty and therefore had an excess of dog testosterone, and he was fine the next day when we walked by (though my little guy was pretty nervous around him for quite a while).

OK, this is my thread. Pit bulls get a bad rap and any breed of dog can and will bite under the wrong circumstances. End of that discussion.

Now, back to Bandit. Yes, Mary, he had better get used to the weather quick, otherwise he may be in for a bit of a shock.

The only dog bite I ever incurred was delivered, believe it or not, by a St. Bernard. I was pushing my baby's stroller down a country road when this huge dog came barrelling out and bit me on the ankle. I grabbed my baby up and swinging the stroller round about and over arm I chased the dog back up her drive.

The next day I got worried about it being a breed that is not considered vicious, went back to the house and knocked on the door. Turned out that the bitch had new puppies and evidently became agitated at the noise of the stroller's wheels grinding on the gravel.

I LOVED reading everyone's post!! I laughed...and you guys are right on target with the dog bites...anyone can bite:) I have a bottle fed rotty that is 117pounds, protective, but my BABY! My oldest has an 80pound pitbull he got from our rescue that my mini dachshund attacked recently putting teeth holes in the pits face...the pit didn't even fight back in defense...
Oh, the comic strip/jokes...the breed specific rescues are more uptight than most of us "anything goes" rescues....and sometimes will not adopt out to you just for not having a fenced yard for the HOUSE DOG you are adopting though you are perfectly willing to walk on a leash....We try to also be "realistic"....
You guys seem like one big happy family...I love it...Bandit should be on schedule...storms or not, they've never ran late (KNOCK ON WOOD!). We love feedback (from all of you:)....and if WTAR can be of service to any of you, just let me know....Bless you all. And thank you for the support you are giving Tami and her family and for Bandit as he makes his journey across the earth to reach the family of his dreams...it's a major transition for him and for all of you...The first three days will be the hardest...after two weeks, everything will be hunky dory...he'll know routines and what is expected of him...and visa versa. But don't hesitate to call or email with ANY questions, problems, concerns or anything...we are ALWAYS here for you and for Bandit. Keep me posted...

Hey all! He's here! Poor boy is a little shell-shocked, as is to be expected, after travelling for most of the last 24 hours. The first thing he did when they got him out of the trailer was to drop to his belly and refuse to move. "Solid ground at last!" is what he seemed to be thinking. I had to pick him up and carry him to the truck and put him in it. When I got in the cab with him, he immediately cleaned my right ear and snuffled me all over. He rides well, is very quiet, very skittish, afraid of doorways and stairs, and oh-so-sweet and adorable. He acquitted himself well at Petco when we stopped to have a nametag made, no peeing on anything, no barking, no growling, no helping himself to the treats. He's a lot shorter than I expected, but it's a very nice size.

Oh, and before I forget, here we are!

How great he looks! Sure, he's a bit scared but that's okay......

Jaeger was 5 months old when we brought him home and was accustomed to living with all his aunts and uncles. He had not ridden much in a car and an ice storm turned our 3 hour drive into 9 hours. When we got home he just wouldn't leave the den where we came in so I gt my blanket and we slept there together that night. It was something I now look back on as very special.

We took it easy for a few days with no real demands, just love and cuddling and he turned out to be the sweeetest and most docile Weimaraner I have ever known....a real sweetheart of a dog. His time is growing pretty short now and I think of those early days often and bonding with that big blue dog.

You have so much to look forward to Tami and he looks to be just the guy to share great times with. Enjoy!

An elderly dog that I rescued was devastated at having lost the only home he'd ever known. When the 'kid' went off to college his parents brought the dog in to the Humane Society. The Humane Society said that he was completely silent and withdrawn, wanting nothing to do with anybody. Makes one's heart ache.

Three days into our adoption was when he let me know that he wanted to stay. I was sitting at the computer, with one hand resting on him on the chair next to me. He was never a licking dog but he turned his head and licked and licked the top of one of my fingers.

It took almost a month before he was sure that I was in it for the long haul. And oh, for that month he was SO good. Indoors or out when I spoke his name he hurried to my side. And he never barked, not at other dogs or at people going by the house.

Then, when he was completely confident of me he became more relaxed all around. He would still come if I called him but he'd nose around on his way; 'I'm coming, I'm coming - but first I have to check this out...'

And he became fiercely protective o me and our home. 'Fiercely', of course, is a relative word- he never threatened anyone but - ya know what I mean?

Thanks for all the good will. Bandit's doing very well, considering he spent almost 24 hours travelling to complete strangers. He's a real snuggle puppy and slept with us last night, using my feet for a pillow. My big concern was whether or not he was house-trained. I am happy to report that he is and he held it for morning walkies at 6:30. My idea to get up, not his, he was quite content to continue snuggling in bed. He's a quick study and is already learning to walk on my left and has conquered his fear of the stairs. Doorways are still a little scary, but he's already doing much better with them, too. And he's not tippy-toeing through the apartment like something is going to jump out and make yellow dog stew out of him. He's also studiously ignoring the cat. She's intrigued and slightly miffed because he hasn't run yelping in fear when she hisses. He just continues to ignore her. As of this AM, they seem to have decided that they can share me and each pretends the other doesn't exist. It's pretty funny, really. He has a very sweet, very agreeable disposition and is quick to forgive. He was pretty smelly when I picked him up, which is to be expected when a dog is crated for that length of time. I stuffed him in the shower last night and gave him a bath. All he did was look at me as if to say: "What did I ever do to you to make you treat me this way?" But he smelled a lot better when we were done.

Right now, he's hanging out with me at Kathy's, and loving having a big Joey as a buddy. He's going to love Seamus.

Bandit is a pretty dog, complete with eye liner and a fluffy tail but is all man. At some point Seamus will get the message and cease humping. The two of them had so much fun running around my back yard and showing off for the neighbor's dog. Bandit manages to leap over Seamus, turn, and lick his nose. Next time we will have a camera. I don't know who is happier: Ranger1 with her new puppy, Bandit with his new family or Seamus with a friend to play with. Happy times.

Can I put in a happy word about our young tomkitty (soon to be de-Thomased), who doesn't, of course, replace our loved and gone Good Dog? He was off to the vet for an exam and booster yesterday. Vet called him beautiful (as if he weren't stuck-up enough, being a cat!) and he's healthy, except for a probably harmless heart murmur.

As cats do, he's beginning to develop personality. He's a very people conscious cat, eager to meet new people, wants to play lots, and has a very sooky evening program, where zonking out in someone's arms is his idea of bliss.

aww, poor Bandit. kitties and doggies can be great friends but it's usually best to introduce the kitty as a baby cat who smells of milk and who likes having its face washed by a big dog tongue.

The hardest part about losing Puppers is that he had his own cat who goes by several names including FANG. Fang was a 3 weeks old when we found her under the house. Puppers took over parenting duties and for the next 4 years they were Frick and Frack. Fang wasn't a people cat, having come froma tribe of local feral cats. She loved only the dog who she would sleep with every night on the dog's bed. Smart cat she! She learnt early on that the warmest and softest place in the house was right up against Puppers' belly. Well, when he died, she spent a few weeks looking for him and sleeping in all his favorite places. She still sleeps on the dog bed and won't let us put it away. I wonder if when we get a young dog, she'll take to him/her?

Enough about my dog - Bandit's the new boy in town! I hope he's finding his way around and enjoying his new digs! Has he met the other neighborhood doggies whilst out for his evening walkies? Has he formed a little dog gang yet? Funny how dogs do that - not funny that they do it, just funny who they choose to be in their gang. Puppers was in a gang full of little dogs. On our street his best friends were mostly terriers and pugs. At the dog park, he gravitated towards "bad girl" types and ran with a Rottweiler mix named Ilssa who liked to lead her gang on big crashing expeditions through the brush. I was always afraid his fondness for Ilssa the She-Wolf of the Hollywood Hills was gonna result in him getting a rattlesnake bite. Thankfully, the worst Ilssa ever did was lead her gang to roll in rotting carcass of a squirell. Peee-yeeeew.

There I go again about my dog. Well, let's all toast Bandit and his new family and wish him long life, happiness and lots of swell dog-pals to play with! Make sure you post a link to some photos, Ranger1 - we dog people like to keep up with the Mudcat pups. Speaking of which, I wonder how Meg the now 3-legged Wonder-Pup is doing.....Sooz?

Here's to Bandit! Rescued dogs are the best dogs if you ask me.
