Is there a thread or Link on Mudcat where
someone can listen to an actual performance
of a song; say a library of links to mp3
performances (non-midi, hopefully gratis).

No, but a lot of the members swap them informally offthread.

There IS a thread about Youtube folk videos though. Mudcat search features will bring it up for you.

The only such I know of specifically tied to Mudcat is the Mudcat Songbook MP3s site which can be found in the thread called "Songs from the Mudcat Songbook". It is an unfortunately incomplete project. Back in the Day there were a lot of people crafting songs under the stimulus of the Gaelic Goddess' witty scourge. A small fraction of them are recorded and available from the above link.

There is also a collection of MIDIs associated with the Digital Tradition. If you download the actual Digital Tradition database either for Windows or Mac, almost all the songs in the DB are playable using selectable MIDI instrument voices. The direct link from the Mudcat's online DigitTrad DB to its MIDIs broke a while back and I am not sure what its current status is.

Hi, Phoenix - If you're looking for real, noncommercial folk songs, I think you'll find that this Google Search (click) will lead you to a number of online folk song recordings.

• The Max Hunter Collection is probably the most extensive.
  
• The Wolf Collection is another.
  
• Centennial Collection of Canadian Folk Songs looks interesting, too.
  
• The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip at the Library of Congress is excellent, and you will find other collections of recordings at the Library of Congress.

I just checked out the Max Hunter Collection
and it alone will keep me busy for some time - what a great site,
especially for anyone interested in Child ballads - they should
give this a look.
