Many of you may like to follow the run-up to their 3rd sell out gig at the biggest villlage hall in the country by taking up this offer from The Western Morning News:

Hopefully Mudcat will allow this thread to stay up here where it belongs, despite the efforts of certain members of Mudcat to turn it into yet another chaotic thread.

Suppression does not belong on here, just as it does not belong on the BBC board either. The more that people give in to it, the more those who seek to do it think they have won.

I would also like to take this opportunity to point out that I do not and will not take over other threads with 'recipes' or anything else.
Think how outraged some of you may feel if I had done that on a Nic Jones thread for instance, or any other thread that you may have started or are enjoying.

So...I'd ask the hypocrites to stay out of this thread. This is the only post I'll put in here, so you won't be able to wind me up any further I'm afraid.

The information I've posted on the link above, is for the many people who read Mudcat, who may well be interested in following up what is going to be happening in The Western Morning News, which is the major 'local' paper for all of Devon and Cornwall.

To anyone else who is going to see Show of Hands at The Royal Albert Hall, I very much hope you enjoy it. I know we all will.

Got tickets for the 'Road to the Albert Hall' show in Fareham on Good Friday.

Staying at the Fareham Easter Festival on Saturday for Kate Rusby and John Tams then hopping on a train to London for the Albert Hall show on Sunday.

Should be a great weekend.

The Waterson's RAH gig, A Mighty River of Song, is on the 12th of May. Let's hope all the family are feeling fighting fit by then! It also includes guest appearances by just about everyone the Watersons have ever met.

Tom Robinson let slip that he and Martyn Joseph would be appearing on stage, I presume for some sort of reprise of Faith, Folk & Anarchy. Seth Lakeman won't be, because he is topping the bill at Fareham Folk Festival that night.

A lot of seats available on that Watersons one still too. Every seating area still seems to be available on the RAH website.

I would have thought that Bush Hall would have been a better sized venue for the likely demand for the Watersons.

Shortdog - have to say I'm surprised at your comment re Frost and Fire. I went with two friends who are not folkies, and they were both extremely impressed by the whole evening, and even specifically mentioned the Mummers play as being great fun and well presented. Maybe the particular evening you saw was a bit down? I went to the Farnham gig, and enjoyed myself far more than I had actually expected to - in fact I would really quite have liked to have had the chance to go a second time. The whole thing fizzed with enthusiasm and good rapport with the audience... in fact when I was handing out badges and flyers with the words on at the start there were two punters there who had seen it the day before in Basingstoke, and had been so enthused that they had to try and get tickets for the Farnham presentation.... so I wasn't alone in thinking it was good!! Sadly I can't make it to the Albert Hall gig, as I shall be elsewhere in London for the Keith Summers Festival (same weekend).

I must admit I had somewhat similar feelings when I saw "Frost and Fire". Musically, it was excellent, but everything else seemed very ... well, amateurish doesn't quite get it either - I've seen many mummers' plays (and other plays) by amateurs which were excellent. F&F was under-rehearsed, certainly. Self-indulgent, maybe?

I saw it very early in the tour (Dartford); maybe that was a factor.

But I've still bought tickets for the Watersons at Albert Hall in the hope F&F was some weird abberation!

Saw Frost and Fire, with my non folky middle son, at Frome. We both thought it was a really good show. He bought the album the next day, and (to my surprise) the Devil's Interval album as well.

I missed the first half of F&F, due to driving round Nottingham like a loon for over an hour searching for a very well hidden venue (note to self: SAT NAV!). The half I saw was smashing. The DI added a really lovely dimension.

The Watersons have a huge following nationally, and people will travel for this gig. It's much more than just the Watersons, for a start - every permutation they've ever played in seems to be lined up, so it's an all-star evening.

It's still over two months away. If it were two weeks away, I could see the folk-rock doom and gloom merchants' point. As a venue manager, I certainly wouldn't be worried at this stage.

Unless the RAH online booking system is playing silly games, it looks like it is near to sold out already. If you try the 'choose you own seat' option you can see what's available in some detail (assuming, as I say, its not trying to pretend that more have been sold than really have, to please some marketing guru!)

To DMcG - You're correct. The Show of Hands show at the Royal Albert Hall is almost sold-out and I hear their show at Fareham on Good Friday is heading the same way.

To GUEST Keith - You're on the right track with your forecasts for Albert Hall guests. As you say Seth Lakeman can't be with Phil & Steve at the Albert Hall on Sunday as he's at the Fareham Easter Festival that night but as SoH are also at Fareham on the Friday who's to say Seth won't join them onstage then?

Sorry to correct you Ruth but...

You have to remember it's a very strange situation at the Albert Hall as many seats are initially reserved for debenture holders.

In addition seats are sometimes released in blocks. Seats that may appear 'sold' on the 'choose your own seat' option may not have been released for sale at all yet.

Looking at the 'choose your own seat' option which is what DMcG did gives a very inaccurate impression regarding the number of seats actually sold.

A gig that may "appear to be almost sold out" could, in truth, be anything but.

Just because those seats may not have been released for sale, it doesn't alter what it looks like, just whether what it looks like is accurate.

By the way my great great grandfather Alfred Hayes, the Impressario, was a partner in the RAH, and his seats are still in the family. Thanks D - actually she can always send unsold seat back to the office, and they usually go (though RAH takes a percentage of course - which people who buy from us - friends, usually can save). The RAH reserves all seats for big money spinners like the Who. Sadly I don't myself own a seat - though all my cousins and sibings do. (I'm afraid I wasn't as QUITE as well-behaved in my youth as I might have been)!

Watersons haven't arrived yet. Seats are all stalls near the back on the right as you look from the stage.

I understand the hire charge for the "exclusive let" where you get all 5000 seats in the RAH is about twice the charge for the "normal" 4000. That's why most acts just book the hall the "cheap" way.

I saw The Who live last summer in a 4500 seat big top in Liverpool. Still awesomely good. Funnily enough, the new Kaiser Chiefs album is on my CD player as I type.

There are alot of good gigs at the RAH coming up. 2 nights of Noel Gallagher solo at end March (those all sold in an hour apparently)plus Ray Davies in May too. Always a superb night with Ray. Especially for Steve Knightley, Don McLean is playing either one or two nights there in the Autumn...

Oh the arena area is fine. I sat four rows back from the front for the last Show of Hands RAH gig in 2001. The seats there are a bit narrow though. My chair tried to get up with me for every standing ovation, and there were about 4 of those. So this April I've gone for the stalls, where I undertand the horizontally challenged are better provided for.

Oh..the acoustics used to be rotten wherever you sat in the hall as I remember...but that was a scarily LONG time ago. My friend's Dad had a Company box there, so we saw loads of gigs as I was growing up..for free..very lucky...Neil Diamond, Melanie, Rod Mckuen, Bert Kampfert (that was a strange evening for a teenager!!) ;0)...Shirley Bassey (magic!)

But seeing Show of Hands there and soaking up the atmosphere is going to be incredible!

I think Steve should ask his Beautiful Clare to marry him all over again too..Awwwwwwwww!

As I said above, Guests are becoming completely barking as well as illiterate.

And yes, it is hard not to despise SoH's neglect of musicality when those who have long known their past work (as opposed to LC who latched on to them approximately 5 minutes ago) are aware of how much better they have been before they stopped bothering.
As for Ruth's post of 12.14 (which I have no doubt will have vanished before I finish typing), I have kept a copy and will repost if necessary, as every word about LC's behaviour is true.

As far as I'm aware, Ruth hasn't been on here pushing anything professionally. I don't think she has even really mentioned Loughborough. She is using a nom de plume. This is a past-time pursuit, so it is reasonable to assume that the posts here contain her own personal opinions which may, or may not, coincide with those she expresses professionally. It also suggests that she wished to be separate from that role, when on here. There are many reasons why this might be.

Or, do you think that event organisers should have no outlet for chat in a forum such as this?

No, this is about something which took place on the BBC board a while back now..and believe you me...there was much pushing of a certain festival and a certain festival organiser at the time, by said festival organiser over and over. There was also a very unnecessary remark made by said festival organiser about Show of Hands. I took umbridge over it and dared to say so...and World War 3 was declared after that I'm afraid....

It wasn't about SoH particularly, but about people having some sense of what is right and wrong when they are festival organisers, purely in my opinion. I merely think there is a line you should not cross on messageboards, particularly the BBC, about insulting artists, whoever those artists may be, especially if the festival itself may at times hire those artists and make money because of them, in order for their festivals to be successful.

It's about honour and a sense of integrity I guess.

Purely my opinion though, but ever since, the insults, as you can see, have been getting far, far worse.

I refuse to go down to those levels though.

And now...I'm away back to The Royal Albert Hall and 'South Australia'

I wish those Fishermen's Friends had a Myspace page...and Blowz...that reminds me!

WHEN are The New Scorpion Band going to get one? It would be a great idea! Help to spread the word etc....I've got them on my site, just as a link, but if they had their own page...magic things would happen! Myspace is that kind of place...it's AMAZING! Tell them they SO have to get one!

The thing I've never been able to understand is that Lizzie "outs" people all the time - it's a power thing, and she has often in the past used this as a weapon of intimidation.Yet she hides behind a fictitious name herself.

When people started treating her in-kind, and letting slip hints about her real identity and personal life, she went mental and cried "foul" to the moderators.

So why is it okay for her to do it to other people, but not for them to do it back to her? She hasn't even got a professional life to be discredited.

For the record, I have never "pushed" my work on any other message board any more than i have here on Mudcat. So you can judge for yourself how appropriate Mrs Route's constant references to it are.
