Campsite is dry and drained. It's sandy so bring plenty of pegs. Compared to many places, the Fylde coast has had little rain.

Penny Black Concert - Fylde Folk Festival 2007

As part of Fylde Folk Festival 2007 - Penny Black have been asked to put a Concert on on Friday 31st August 2007 at the Old Victoria Hotel in Fleetwood.

It was decided that it would be a great opportunity to get MySpace Friends together, and although a three hour concert couldn't offer everyone a chance to perform, it did give Penny Black the unenviable choice of who to ask - this they did based on friends who have given their support to the Penny Black A.R.C. (Arthritis Research Campaign) collections over the years, up and coming local artistes they felt deserved an airing, old friends that have been around for many years (you know who you are!) and New friends made on myspace but who they have never met face to face, even after many hours of deliberation, soul searching and arguing the short list was far too long - so here are the six acts who will be representing the 100's of friends who Penny Black would have liked to have invited.

Penny Black hopes no one feels left out and if anyone is to blame it's The Queen (heads or tails take your pick!)

To all MySpace Members, please come along to the Concert, say hello and support this hopefully one of many Fylde Folk Festival's Penny Black & (MySpace) Friends Concerts, to all those who offered their talents and couldn't be fitted in a message from Penny Black: "You know we still love you and YOU ARE HEROES" :0) For those who are Performing "Many thanks and we'll see you on the night if not before"

Penny Black Concert (Fylde Folk Festival 2007)

31st August The Victoria Hotel Fleetwood 8.00pm

(projected Running order)

Dave Alderman

Sharron Crompton

Dylan Owen

Wendy Arrowsmith

Tony Robinson

I managed to get a ticket and therefore a camp permit! May not make many gigs but if it costs £64 to camp at Fylde what do I care - at least it will keep the riff-raff away:-)

Seriously - Does anyone realy think that the people who cannot afford to get a B&B can afford a weekend ticket? Seems a bit of odd logic to me but - hey - I don't run the most sucessful folk festival in the North West so what do I know!

Anyway - Who is going and where are the 'catters hanging out? If you will excuse the expression...

:D

It's always a fine balance Dave: every year there's very careful budgetting. If someone would provide the cash, we'd put on the best free festival you could imagine. As it is, ticket revenues form the bulk of Fylde's income - as Alan is wont to say 'Bums on seats'

Fylde is unusual in that 'no charge' venues have many top artists provided by the Festival. The hope is that Folk music then gets to the general public, and flourishes.

Camping is a particular pressure for us at Fylde. Loos security and transport don't come cheap.

Anyway, enjoy - we think this year's line-up is a good one.

Regards

Stu

I have no problem at all with the Festival, Stu. I have been going to Fylde for at least 30 years and, as a fellow festival organiser on a much smaller scale for 25 of those, I can honestly say it is one of the best in the world!

The only issue I had was that to camp I had to pay £50-odd pounds for a ticket I will probably not use, £10 for the camp site and £1 booking fee! There seems to be no alternative apart from B&B which would be just as dear and I would have no chance of booking at short notice. It does not exactly lend itself to someone who just wants to camp, cannot say if they can go until the last minute or, worst of all, cannot afford a weekend ticket:-( Glad to say I am not in the latter group:-)

But, like I said, it hasn't become one of the most sucessful festivals going by worrying about who can afford to go! And, again like both Basil Fawlty and I have said before, it keeps the riff-raff away:-)

Cheers

Dave

I have no problem at all with the Festival, Stu. I have been going to Fylde for at least 30 years and, as a fellow festival organiser on a much smaller scale for 25 of those, I can honestly say it is one of the best in the world! And the Best Value!!!

Three Full Days (and early mornings)of Entertainment, Camping and transport around the Fest. for £61 - just a few pence over £20 a day!

Why won't you use the ticket? Why can't you buy a weekend ticket if and when you get there? If someone can't afford a weekend ticket, they could always go for a day and enjoy all the free frindge events provided! - and if you just want to camp - go to a camp site! - looks like you want to pay a tenner for 3 days camping go to all the free events which Ticket purchasers are providing for you! - hey want a FREE pint as well?

But, like I said, it hasn't become one of the most successful festivals going by worrying about who can afford to go! And, again like both Basil Fawlty and I have said before, it keeps the riff-raff away:-) -

As you say "That doesn't include you" - Hey Fylde festival organisers where's the hoards of wilder beasts roaming on Fleetwood Promenade? call yourself a folk festival!

what an AH

Dave, if you have been running a festival for 25yrs, how do you pay for the Artists if nobody buys a ticket? & If you did want B&B you would have to book about 12mths in advance, because there are only a handfull of B&B's left in Fleetwood, most of the old ones are now D.S.S. accomadation.

Dozy Rozy - The Fringe at Fylde is mainly at the pubs in the programme i.e. The Mount Hotel, the Steamer, The Marine Hall Bar, the Victoria, the North Euston outside of programmed sessions. Other pubs have accepted loose sessions readily eg the Queens, the Strawberry Gardens, the Fleetwood Arms (these latter ones aren't arranged - it's up to you to speak to the landlord. The Victoria has a tradition of Irish Sessions during the Festival; the Steamer has a good attitude to music fostered by Penny Black and by Fleetwood Folk Club. The Mount has singarounds and mixed singaround/playaround.

Milton Street Community Centre has sessions as well as workshops.

Hi Al - great to hear from you, not "Logged on" here very much - although I do sit on the side a bit! Was talking about you to Ann at The Clarence folk club - maybe you'll pop over to the club sometime I'm sure they'd book you....

Might have the bucket at the sing around - but not doing anything special, like the Autographed Guitar Raffle, we did last year.

Have a look on the Myspace site or in the programme to see where we are, and say hello. Still at The Steamer on Tuesday Lunchtimes as well.

hopefully catch you at Fylde

Pete - and John

PS Bill's not well and waiting to go into Hospital any day now so although he might get to the Fest we've had to bring in our second reserve Bass Player Jerry (big fiddle job)for the weekend - that's the problem with being a 3 piece duo!

Les - People do buy tickets for our festival just like people buy tickets for Fylde. Like I said, I have no problem at all with the festival. About 5 years ago I bought two tickets and found on the weekend we could not go:-( I used to religiously purchase 2 weekend tickets in about March of every year but I am now not in th esame position due to other commitments! I am around 80% sure I will not be called out this weekend but I am not completely sure. We would not have the same problem at Swinton anyway because we do not have camping facilites.

The point I am trying to make is that to camp I have to buy a weekend ticket - Which I may not be able to use because I may not be able to go! I know from experience that I cannot rely on being able to buy one when I am there because they do on occasions sell out.

Festival Whore - If you would grace us with your real name and if I do get there I will buy you a pint at the Steamer and explain that I do not want to just turn up becuase, like I said above, they may have sold out. I could also explain that there are NO other camp sites in Fleetwood. I would also like to find out why you feel the need to call someone you have never met and who believes he is making a valid point, quite politely, an Arsehole. I guess that is what 'AH' stands for isn't it? Does hiding behind Internet anonimity make you feel brave enough to insult people but not quite brave enough to use the real words or something? I am intrigued! :-)

Cheers

Dave

BTW - I work on contract in Newcastle and live in Manchester so, at best, I will get home around 8pm Friday. Spend the evening with the family, get to Fylde Saturday morning spend until Sunday afternoon there, go home, get cleaned up, sleep and set off for Newcastle at 6am Monday. That is if I am not called into the local office (Crewe!) over the weekend. Not complaining - it is my choice - Just so you know that it is not easy for everyone to enjoy the full weekend.

Just so you know Dave I don't go along with the insulting post: I know the camping problem well. From the Festival's viewpoint we must ensure that W/E ticket holders who wish to camp can do so. There isn't an overflow site that we can find. But we're a friendly bunch - if there are particular problems, give us a ring. There may be a solution.

I know, Stu - and I have been a recipient of that same kindness when I was allowed to kip in my car at the camp site car park:-) It is much appreciated. I also know that a festival orginisers task is difficult and often thankless. I realy didn't want to make an issue - It was just an observation.

Maybe if, as often is the case, the number of camping permits does not fill the space available then the festival could allow non weekend ticket holders to camp for a commercial rate? Say £10 per person per night? It could help those of us who can only turn up at the last minute and put a bit extra in the pot to boot! Just a thought? Or maybe the Sea Cadets may want to make a bit of cash by allowing indoor camping at their place - As has happened during occasional tent hang-gliding weekends!

Cheers

Dave

Some thoughts there. If there were spaces after the start of the festival, I'm sure that no-one would be turned away. A lot of organisations now are charging highly for the use of property; this is usually attributed (probably rightly) to Health and Safety regs + insurance. But we do have good relationships with many organisations developed over the years.

Glad you mentioned hang-gliding. Anyone who camps at Fylde, take plenty of substantial pegs and guys. The problem is not always excessive wind, but sandy campsites - pegs pull out more easily than on heavier soil.

I mean you, Geoff. Specificaly you. No one else deserves the title. You are the riffiest-raffiest riff-raff ever to raff a riff.

In case anyone was wondering why I was able to post a message from the camp site at Fylde it is because I am not there. I am in a very quiet office fixing some very minor faults on a completely useless piece of computer equipment. Bastards.

Not that I'm at all bitter...

Anyway, Festival Whore will be happy. I MAY just be able to get there tomorrow so not only will I have paid £60-odd towards his or her enjoyment but I will not be using up much of their valuable sniping space. For the third time at least. Well, if nothing elsem the call in to work pays for the ticket at least 4 times over. The fact that it is one less ticket for someone who COULD benefit better from it should not spoil their ability to call someone who has dedicated countless hours to festivals an arsehole...

I'll still buy you a pint though. Doubt if an anonymous whinger would ever be brave enough to admit who they are though;-)

Cheers and, seriously, have a wonderful time everyone.

Dave.

I'd be very interested to hear if Vin Garbutt sings any new songs - either written by himself or other composers. Vin has a knack of finding very interesting songs by pretty obscure - to the wider folk music audience - songwriters.

He's a wonderful song writer and it was real privilege to sing with him again.
