Actually mg at Robinia's computer. It's a great day for the Irish (and everyone else). I am off to march in the parade...should be fun. I was at an event last night and whilst I usually do not bedeck myself, I was so desirous of some of he jewelry the women were wearing..and some of the men. I did have a brooch that blinked on and off and it broke...but these ladies exceeded that...they had things that sparkle and blinked and twinkled all at once. Then a pirate came in with hoop earrings that were irridescent and shown in the dark but were illuminated somehow...and then the fairest of them all..a beautiful young woman with a tiara that also twinkled. I did want one and I wonder if there is an age limit that makes you look a bit foolish if you wear such finery but I think if it makes you feel beautiful you should at any age.

Well, anyway, have a geat day. The one day a year devoted to having fun.   mg

I could never understand why St. Patrick is such a hero to the Irish. I thought it was St. Patrick who brought Roman rule to Ireland. Isn't that a bit like First Nations People celebrating the arrival of the White Man?

Please tell me why he was so great?

No, he brought Christianity to those parts of Ireland to which it hadn't been brought before, which was most of the country. And Celtic Christianity is/was a WHOLE different thing from the Roman sort. For one thing, it wasn't based upon the monolithic model of the Roman Empire.

Though used as the basis for the fictional series featuring "Sister Fidelma," the author, Peter Berresford Ellis,Celtic scholar, writing as Peter Tremayne, has some good info on early Christianity in Ireland on this page.

Christianity was already in Ireland by the time Patrick arrived. It wasn't, however, very popular. I know that Celtic and Roman Catholicism is different but I thought it was Patrick that provided the organizational (political) elements that he learned from his Roman upbringing. It then reverted to Celtic Catholicism at a later date. I could be wrong. This comes from a weak memory of the history of the dark ages.

I'll try to find a link that isn't Catholic.

Anyway, happy St Paddy's day. Only in America would people drink green beer and wear tiaras! Go figure...

Rapaire - I have read many various accounts of whether or not St. Patrick can be given all the credit for the Irish conversion to Catholicism. Some say it wasn't until 100 years after his death that all of Ireland was Catholic.

One thing everyone seems to agree about is that he codified the traditional laws of Ireland and introduced the Roman alphabet.

Who knows. Its hard to separate the myth from the legend but you would think that the Irish would have chosen an Irish hero to represent Ireland instead of a Catholic Brit. Oh well - Maybe someday we will be celebrating the mighty Finn.

The Daughter bleached her hair to blonde then put bright green stripes/streaks in it. She is also wearing a green plastic headband with fuzzy plush green shamrocks on wriggly springs. Several buttons/badges. Kiss Me, I'm Irish, etc and green Mardi Gras beads...........I'm sorta embarassed. She also plans to drink a green beer tonight. I'm really embarassed about that.

Green beer is almost as heinous and almost as weak as those damned green shakes that McDonald's sells. Patrick brought Chritianity to Eire but he may not have brought it to all of Eire. He is revered in Eire and that, friends, is good enough for me. Happy Saint Patrick's day to you all and all the blessings you deserve.

Well, it was agood excuse to buy corned beef and cabbage cheap and have a feast. I suppose it isn't properly Irish - better to refer to it as "New England Boiled Dinnah."
But heck, it goes good with beer.

HERE is the page I was actually looking for in which Ellis gives some great history about the Celtic Church vs the Roman Church, etc.

I got some wonderful St. Patrick's Day kisses from my grandson, wearing his "kiss me, I'm Irish" shirt, red hair and all. It's been a great day.

I went down to Kells in downtown Portland...where they were having a couple of tents for the music....one of the bands was a folk group....they were good....but it was bland...the same crap....like rocky road to dublin and whiskey in the jar and the like...they had a couple of rock bands though that were very good....

Some of those girls were wild...I felt like a piece of meat...they would run up and flip up my kilt and such....one girl wanted a picture with me and so i said yes of course...then she lifts up the hem of my kilt and I just laughed....very humiliating...;)....it was a fabulous time...

afterwards I was on the corner outside the tent...a girl walks up and says your a happy little irish soul...and gives me a big kiss on the lips...and walks away...a guy next to me says dude that was awesome...

It was the best time I ever had on Saint Patrick's.

We had a party. corned beef and cabbage for 12, followed by the playing of Irish music. We had 3 harpers, 3 wind players, and percussion. The percussion moves around. If someone decides there are too many flutes, s/he picks up a drum, bones or triangle instead.

We had a great time.

Started the day with the St. Pat's Day parade from Philadelphia on the TV. It was pretty dull, as if it was thrown together as it was televised, actually more boring than televised golf. Mostly, I don't care about St.Pat's, but corned beef is cheap this time of year, so I bought a slab. It came out beautfully, accompanied by my friends recipe for cabbagle Norwegian style (cream sauce with nutmeg), and an Irish soda bread that I made from scratch. It was my first attempt, and I'm proud of the result. Creamed corned beef on home-made biscuits for breakfast the next morning. It was a good weekend.
