Welcome to new member please

From: Balsto da Loteya

Hello everybody I am joining you here because I am very interested in the folk music. I am from Portugal, the seaside town of Viana do Castelo. This is in north, just by the border with Galicia which is famous for its Celtic music. There is some old music here in Portugal too, the old fisherman sailed acroos the Atlantic into the sea by Canada and came back with a load of cod and then they would sing in the bars by the harbour. I do not like the old cod music so much, my parents did, but I think the Celtic is more fun for we younger ones. I go the pub called Dirty Gertie's, also it near the harbopur, where some German and Dutch people play the celtic music, and I like that, I am learning to play bodhran and bones and they let me join in. I have bought a whistle to play tunes but so far I am not playing well.
If anybody has advice for me, or just has wish to say hello, that would be very good
Thank you
Balsto

Hello, Balsto, and welcome. Being Greek myself, I have great interest in southern European music - though I have to say that I find fado sometimes too hard.

I see you are only 200km or so from Asturias across the border - my favourite group of the area have been Felpeyu, at least until the tragic death of Igor Medio and Carlos Redondo last summer. Do you know of them and their music? And do you perhaps know if the group intend to continue after their loss?

Anyway - good luck with learning whistle, bones and bodhran, and have fun with the music.

Hi form sunny Manchester(UK)
We have our own port as well ... just no ships and the only cod is in the "chippy" but we DO have an ecleptic mix of folk!

Hi Balsto
I also like folking in my country. We sometimes do folk with just two people but I prefer a good session with a large group, then you don't know the person whose instrument you are playing with, it's much exciting.
Our pub session allows folk in the front but it has another room around the back so we sometimes we take it up the rear. It's a tight fit but we manage to fit in.
I would be interested to hear of other country's folking traditions.
I'm waiting for you to get in touch on my folking website and you can see pictures of my instrument and the fingering system I use to bring pleasure to many.
Jenny

Hi balsto welcome to the friendliest most helpful bunch of nutter you could wish for

before anyone gets into the Bodhran jokes let me start seriously.

Any percussion player from Timpani to shaky egg has to have a sense of timing and rythm. When you get into the feel of a tune you can somehow sense the change of tempo before it happens.
Don't try and jon in at the start of every tune. listen for a few bars and get the feel, click or tip at the first beat of a few bars then go for it!!
This has the advantages of letting you make sure the tune is not too fast to join in with cofortably and also shows the other musicians respect because you are listening and learning and not just showing off.

Oh and I hiope you have a set of good, real bone, bones they make all the difference.

Good luck,

Andy (Bones, Tea chest bass, Concertina, Voice, but mostly Fool)

Hi George and Giok
I am not understanding the British humouring. Do you doubt my folking credentials? I have been playing the oboe (it's my own special pink one) for as long as I can memorise and have been told that my lip technique is unique.
I have held many positions for the National Folking Magazine and worked my way from the bottom to being on top of this great organ. I have my own large column which is used by anyone who feels the need.
I have always had it hard - when I have sometimes found myself on my knees I always rise to the occasion and work my way up any available passage.
These are my folking credentials what are yours?

The weather is lovely today, it is very warm and not windy, and I walked down by the harbour this morning, had a box of smoked salty cod pieces from the woman with a little fire in her fishy box, and then went into Dirty Gertie's to hear the Celtic music. (I sit here now with my little laptop)

I for one would love to hear one of your smoked salty cod piece songs, either in the original or in translation. It is my understanding that the tunes are traditionally rendered in the diabolic scale, depending on the size of the catch.

I'm less interested in the Celtics, given their abysmal record this year even in their home games in Boston.

Hi everybody
I am liking the way this mudcat welcomes intercourse between many people. In my country we often have a coming together at our massed debate evenings where we discuss whether folking traditions should be taken by hand or should be oral.
We also have percussion workshops and I try my best to beat the skin with expert hands but my folking partners say I'm just a slapper. Of course I get my own back on the accordion workshop because there is nobody faster on buttons than me.
I'm sure my offerings will have aroused your interest (I can almost imagine your fingers working furiously to join this massed debate) and I look forward to many entries this evening. And remember - size doesn't matter, I will gladly receive all your posts whether long or short.

The term uses the Lating prefix 'pre', meaning 'before'. The 'app.' is the abbreviated 'application', and an 'ism' is, among other things 'a usage'.

We all say some funny things, frequently accidentally. People never let you forget these. A pre-app-ism is something which stands long after you've forgotten the reason. You wanted to fill something out, and you probably did, but the pre-app-ism lingers.

Subject: RE: Welcome to new member please
From: Peace

Priapism is one indicator of severe spinal injury/trauma in falls or MVCs. Also

"Priapism is a prolonged and painful erection that can last from several hours up to a few days. The priapismic erection is NOT associated with sexual thoughts or sexual activity. What happens is that blood flows into the penis, but is unable to drain as it would in a normally flaccid penis. Considering that the penis provides little room for blood to circulate, the blood becomes stagnant after a while, acidifies, and loses oxygen. Without oxygen, the red blood cells become stiff, and even less able to squeeze their way out of the penis.

Very few cases of priapism are without an obvious cause. In most cases, priapism results from one of two things: certain medications or medical conditions. Under the category of medications, there are two primary culprits. For one, penile injections used to treat some forms of impotence can cause priapism; however, this usually only happens when a man decides, on his own, to increase the dosage. Second, psychiatric medications, such as anti-depressants, seem to cause some cases of priapism; however, how these drugs affect priapism is unclear. The second major cause of priapism is certain medical conditions and diseases -- generally, any that cause the blood to thicken, or cause red blood cells to lose their flexibility and mobility. Sickle-cell anemia and leukemia are probably the most common conditions that cause priapism."

I just want to meet some good people to talk about folk music, but some of you seem to think this is funny joke. What is your favourite singer? I at the moment am liking the English boy Seth Lakeman a big lot, also Beyonce. Do both of these singers appear in the folk magazines in your country?

You have made me laugh so much I have almost wet myself...(spilt my cup of coffee). Please stay around and help us all to lighten up a bit and enjoy being here. Best wishes, Mike.

Mr GUEST

You know what we do with unwelcome GUESTS in the mountains of Portugal? I tell you what we do. We kill them, and feed them to the cod. You call me "Balls" huh? I feed those bits of you first. It is matter of honour. You try this on Mudcat, soon you have no trouble with the GUESTS. Simple.

I could not leave after seeing Balsto's last post. I think you are confusing English boys with the lady-boys of the middle east.
Sethla Keman is my uncle and famous for his/her white hair although we think it is not genuine. I have other lady-boys in my family and we often get together in southern regions were we have some relations.
Uncle Sethla will fiddle with family members and perform the broom dance until everybody tries to get their leg over.

Balsto - I don't laugh at you, I think we could make beautiful music together. I hope one day I play with your Portugese bagpipe and you can sing to my G-string.
Jenny

I'd heard the mountain cod were all trapped for their fur. I just Googled them though, and found out a small school of these fuzzy fish were found about 4 years ago by Wysteria Finch-Zoltan a transplanted English pagan, while she was performing a ritual. Now, says the article, the cod lurks in Wysteria's maze.

It's nice to know that, while some things die out when they're made to be so obvious to people, these harmless creatures can flourish in a safe place, out of sight of people out of their minds.

People are mistaken here it is not the mountain cod that the men in the mountains use for matters of honour. The mountain cod are very rare(I think maybe extinct), it is the orinary cod of the sea I am here describing. At the castles and monasteries they often have big ponds, and the peasants used to carry up live cod and sea water on the donkeys. This means there is always fresh fish for the monks and lords. If people wish to remove unwanted GUEST or similar nuisances, the mens take them, strip them and bind them, and throw them in the pool. A hungry 20 kilo cod can be a big eater of the bits of a man. When people first did this(I think back in the time of removing the Moors) the fish did not like the taste of people, so they are always smeared all over with a paste made from anchovies before they are thrown in the pond. This is still done, though the government in Lisboa try to stop it.

one of the most beautiful places in Portugal, as well as Europe.
I remember visiting there when I was 13; we staed
in a beuatiful castle / hotel on a mountain top that overlooked
the mountains on one side, and the Atlantic on another. What memories ! Someday I hope to return to Portugal, a truely
wonderful country.

Ah, you lucky to have such memories. To taste the smoked salty cod pieces when young, that is heaven. You remember any music? Was this long time ago? There were very many fado singers then, the special Potugese music when the ladies howl and wail very miserably for long long time. That is the true beauty in Viana.

Hi all! I just joined and figured I'd introduce myself, though the only introduction thread I could find was last used in 2009, so for lack of a better place...

You can call me Allen or Noodles, I'm fairly new to the folk scene (been listening to and enjoying the music since I was a little grub, but just recently making forays into the wider community) -- I figured I spent enough time on here digging up lyrics and song origins and suchlike that it'd be worth making an account and talking to all you cool folks!

I'm most into union songs & work songs, and the intersections of labor/protest history and music history, as well as songs about historical events (even heavily fictionalized ones). I've also lived in Seattle my whole life and go ham for anything dealing with boats and the sea.

Really excited to be here!

Enjoy spending time lurking to see what threads are active now and what threads are on topics that interest you that can be revived (they'll be linked in the tops of existing music threads or found via the search bar at the top of the main Mudcat page.).

I've found the best way to search mudcat is to do a google site search - union songs site:mudcat.org, that way I can skim down & find the thread/s I want.

A great source of Australian union songs is occasional Mudcatter Mark Gregory's Union Songs He also includes songs from other countries,

world-wide links - Union Music and Cultural Sites - as Mark's site started in the 90s (like Mudcat) some of these could be dead.

My two cents - I will echo The Sandman and say avoid the contentious stuff. As far as knowledge of music, lyrics, and the like, Mudcat folks can be very giving and generous.
