03 Sep 12 - 08:21 PM (#3399720) Subject: BS: Walnut Valley Festival (Kansas - US) From: JohnInKansas Although it's far too late to be of much use for people to organize much of anything, I haven't seen a thread about the Walnut Valley Festival for 2012. The critical item of information is that "Landrush," when everyone tries to get a place to camp for the festival, will be on September 6, 2012. As I'm too far behind to do a proper post, I'll only note that there are links to prior posts and related information in the thread for last year, at Winfield 2011 A few posts down in that thread, there are links to "many" of the prior year threads. Many people who really want their favorite campsites will already have been down there for nearly a month. We've burned out on the fightin' and feudin' associated with that exercise, so we plan to arrive after the dust settles on the day of Landrush, and expect (hope?) to camp in the East campground, most likely somewhere behind the red horsebarn. If you have a large camper, it's probably best to get there by Landrush, but of course there's always room for "day visitors" and/or "tenters," or even small Campers/Travel Trailers. This is "officially" the 41st year for the festival, commonly called "the WVA Festival" for the "Walnut Valley Association" that sort of runs it. The location is at the County Fairground in Winfield, Kansas, about 40 miles southeast of Wichita. It appears that there are several performers on the schedule that we're not very familiar with, which could mean that they're trying to bring in some newer talent, or that they're just too broke to afford the usual big names. It could also be because we spend all our time pickin' in the campground and hardly ever go to one of the scheduled performances, so we just haven't heard much about what's going on. (If they want to pick with us, the performers can come down to the camp - and several of them have!!!! We have gotten somewhat acquainted with some real winners that way.) [Quite incidentally, this festival is where I (briefly) met Art Thieme a couple of times, and I can assure you that bodily harm - and/or intensive educational duress - may result if you say "Who?" in our camp when the subject comes up. And IT WILL. We remember.] Check the previous thread (linked above) for where to get details, until somebody gets the energy to do a proper post. It doesn't present its best from the daytrip perspective; one must camp on the grounds to fully experience what it has to offer -- which is a lot. If anyone wants more info, whether persuasion on why it would be foolish, bordering on criminal, not to come, or tips on negotiating it easily, give me a call: 816-699-5889 (if I don't know you, identify yourself as a Mudcatter). I too plan to arrive on Landrush day and camp in the Pecan Grove. Not sure where exactly; I'll be looking for good shade. If you're at Winfield and want to see if I'm really as funny-looking as I'm sure John tells everyone I am, give a call. John (whose "double bass" really is a fine design), it's always a treat seeing you and Lin, and I'll look forward to it in a few days. The act I suggest making special effort to see is the Quebe Sisters. I suspect they'll be what I call the "Sweetheart of the Weekend" -- i.e., the act that everybody raves about. We'll bring the beer. We will drive up to Winfield on Friday in time for the Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance picnic on Saturday. We will be splitting time between the fair grounds and visiting relatives out on the farm, as usual. I expect to be drafted to cook for Main Street Association's fund raiser Wednesday next week, though no one has said anything yet. Several of our favorites are booked to play Winfield this year. Top of the list is The Greencards, who are returning after a one year absence. The Greencards on Stage II on Saturday night – joined by other star performers as the evening progresses – is a much fun as you can have in Winfield, Kansas with your clothes on. The Quebe Sisters Band's brand of Western Swing should not be missed. They are our neighbors from North Texas and we've listened to them since they started performing. Téada is one of our favourite Irish bands. We saw them a couple weeks ago at the Milwaukee Irish Festival and they put on a great show. Of course Winfield being Winfield, some of the best music will be in the campgrounds. - Phil |

Bringing beer is entirely optional, for you strange people who like those strange brands... I'm thinking I'll have to visit one of the local wineries to see if they have Land Rush Wine this year.
