BS: Not such a happy birthday to me

Charlie here, it's my 66th today but the whole thing is a bit subdued because my lovely wife, Ann, is recovering after a liver transplant. A few good wishes would be a great help. Thank you.

Charlie my neighbour where I was brought up had that done nearly 40 years ago what a difference it made to his life so although this years birthday might be a bit more mellow than some it may turn out to be the best present either of you have ever got.

Relax and enjoy, if you can, do something unstressful that you will both get pleasure from make a memory they are precious things.

This birthday may not be a happy one, FB, but it's a good one. A suitable donor liver became available when your wife was still strong enough to survive the operation, the surgical team did their thing according to plan, and your good lady is now in recovery. That's a medical miracle by anyone's standard.

But it's sure no fun to stand by and wait for the seconds and minutes and hours to tick by while other people do dangerous things to the most important person in your life. Here's hoping you'll celebrate your next birthday with both of you in fine fettle.

I can relate. On my father's 66th birthday the house was struck by lightning and the roof caught on fire. We wound up living in a trailer in the driveway for the next four months, while the house was remodeled. I'm wishing your wife a speedy recovery.

Thank you all so much for your supportive, positive and greatly appreciated posts. There's a long way to go yet but the care and attention she is receiving at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh is exemplary. So good,in fact, that Ann is sending sweets and a card to the ICU Unit!.
My younger step-daughter is emigrating to Singapore today so things have been a bit more complicated than they might have been. Our grand-daughters were allowed in to see their Nanna yesterday and performed one of their song and dance routines for her.
Anyway, my thanks again and I'll keep you posted from time to time.
Love and best to you all
Charlie.

It's chucking down here in Dunfermline and apparently the same in Singapore! No change of environment there, then (Joke).
Ann was on her mobile to me this morning and she's telling me off about stuff, which is fine by me.

BTW....Happy Birthday!

Thank you for your good wishes GtS. Believe me yours and all here are most appreciated and a great help. I'm saddened to hear about your friend's wife and, yes, I do count my blessings. Maybe a look round the average Intensive Care Unit should be compulsory for anybody whinging about their lot.
Anyway, Ann is being moved from HDU to the transplant recovery ward, so...maybe in a few days I shall be trusted to wheel her round the hospital and maybe...just maybe take her for a coffee or something in the downstairs cafe!.
Once again, and I shall never stop saying this, thank you all for everything.

Subject: RE: BS: Not such a happy birthday to me

Sorry to take a while to get back, but Ann told me to have a day off so that I could 'do the garden' etc.
Good news , she's been for a Zimmer/Charlie assisted stroll up the ward and back and is starting to eat real food!.
Bad news - the clips holding the wound together may be removed to-day. She's a brave lady but not looking forward to that.
On the whole, and I realize that this is easy for me to say, she's doing as well as the Doctors expect. There is a slight possibility that she'll be home within a week! So, even though I'm not especially untidy there's still always the chores and necessary arrangements to make.
My heartfelt thanks to you all. I'm sure it has helped tremendously.

Although the removal of the clips sound like no fun, it is really a good thing, isn't it, as long as it is not done too soon? I hope it goes well and is easier than Ann expects it will be.

Hey Charlie, removing the clips, as Chantey Lass said, is a GOOD thing, and an answer to prayer...that she recover and heal, right??
Don't forget, to seriously THANK God, as much as you BEGGED him to help, and Have that Happy Birthday!!!

Warmest Regards!!

Good evening, everybody. Ann came home on Monday 15th in the late afternoon. I have assumed mu duties as carer, chief cook and bottlewasher. Although it's only been a couple of days things are going fairly well and despite the long haul ahead we are not doing too badly. There will be the occasional update as it's the least I can do after all the good wishes here.
She has her weekly hospital appointment to-morrow (Thursday) so I can get a few chores etc done while she is away.
May I say a huge thank you to you all.
Best wishes from Mr and Mrs. fB

She's back in hospital as she has a slight infection. For anybody who's had surgery the phrase 'wound' will give some indication of what's happening. Otherwise everything is going well, according to the consultants, and she is getting excellent care.

Thank you, Ann is still in hospital and has had further, but not as major, surgery due to complications. These complications are apparently common in 15-20% of liver transplants. I'm not doing too badly myself and have just about mastered the art of house husbandry. Hopefully she#ll be home soon and we can set about restoring that crazy little thing called 'normality'.
Thank you again for your much appreciated kindness.

Hello. Ann is still in hospital in Edinburgh having been there a fwew weeks now. She is pretty weak through not beong able to take solids in but the consultants etc, who are wonderful, are trying all sorts of techniques to help with this. She "kicks my arse" ocasionally but does get low, understandably, from time to time. I visit more or less every day and sometimes she, blesss her, gives me a day off.
We have to stay optimistic because to think otherwise is out of the question, but, if I'm a relatively honest man, things do get me down now and then.
The kindness shown here is very important and I pass it on to Ann.
Thank you all once more and I shall try to keeep you informed a bit more. Love and thanks from Charlie and ANN x

Charlie and Ann If thoughts, prayers, wishes, candles and songs can help the folk around here will forward all they can to you both.

Its alright to feel half empty some days heck it is even alright to have a cry when you are on your own. When you walk in the door of the hospital is the time to put the sunshine face back on.

May you both be strengthened by the love of others
May the energy they generate fill you both
May the peace they send allow you both to sleep peacefully
May the medical staff be filled with knowledge and compassion
Whatever the outcome know that you are both loved and cared for.

I'm grateful to ChanteyLass for bringing your thread to my attention, Charlie. From me & my Ann to you & your Ann, loving & healing thoughts. These are tough times & remaining 'up' & positive can prove so difficult to sustain. Reading through the posts, the high regard in which you are held comes across loud & strong. Ann & I wish your belovéd Ann a speedy & complete recovery & we wish you a slightly belated Happy Birthday,
                   With Love,

Thank you so much, Nigel and Ann. You are the icing on an incredible cake.
Anyway, I just got back from my visit to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and we had our weekly chat with the various doctors, urgeons and nursing staff who care for Ann.
Three good things: temperature down to normal so less infection, blood pressure up to normal so slightly more oomph and last but by no means least, a drain fitted last Thursday is functioning better than thought after a CT scan showed a marked imporovement. Even the surgeon was surprised.
Still a long way to go but theses pages make it easier to deal with.
Love and best from Charlie Fb and Ann XX

Charlie I am so glad to hear of a small step forward our arms cannot hold you both but our words can stretch from here to there wherever we are. When David was ill someone asked me how I kept going the answer was a bit tongue in cheek but none the less true some days "I remember to keep putting one foot in front of the other." some days that's all we can do.

Thank you for keeping us updated now go eat and sleep lad she needs you to look after yourself as well.

So pleased to read the latest news, Charlie. Progress is progress, no matter how small the increments, but it sounds as if Ann's 'increments' are not so small. It's also rather satisfying when doctors express their surprise at how well things are going (satisfying for them too, I would imagine).

Hmmmmm! I just spoke to one of the many outstanding nurses who looks after Ann. Apparently she(Ann, that is)has become very picky about what she'll eat. As the nurses are super tolerant they will actually go to the hospital canteen in order to get her something. If she orders me to fetch a Fortnum & Mason's (Big snooty UK shop) hamper in I'd better get on the train to London. It's better to have some humour than not. I'll be checking up on her later. I don't care whatshe eats as long as it's something that isn't fed by tube!
Big thanks from a loving hanging in there husband.

very good news.

Food = fuel, but when a patient starts choosing what food she wants, that's a very good sign of recovery.

Charlie, is looks like you might need to start bringing in some of Ann's favourite foods!

I always enjoyed the hospital food here but I never stayed any more than a few days. Anybody I knew that stayed any length of time grew tired of it quickly. I hope she is able to get some home cooked meals soon.

Charlie woke up this morning thinking of Ann and yourself. Hope she is still improving. In the old nightingale wards they used to move you towards the door as you got noisier so by the time you were complaining about the food you were close enough for them to think about kicking you out :)

I'm afraid Ann's still not taking in hardly any 'solids'. She will not be bullied into doing anything and does occasionally feel like giving up. Today we - her and I -had a lovely visit and I actually got a few smiles as I practiced my version of Reflexology. One of the nurses downloaded a foot chart for me, which is the sort of thing they do at the ERI, and I/we did some light leg strengthening stuff.
Reading the posts here is really heartening as, every now and then I feel like having 'a bit scream'.
We will of course get there, but it is a long haul.
Thanks to all
Charlie and Ann xx

Like Megan said, Charlie & Ann, a day at a time. A step at a time. That is how progress is always made. Take care of yourself. If you don't, you can't take care of Ann. Envisioning the two of you surrounded by the energy of your long love and knowledge of one another, and then the concentric rings of light and caring from the layers of friends and relationships you have built during your lives, including this on, here within your Mudcat community.

Charlie its the little things that keep us going, the smile from another visitor, a total stranger who for a brief moment understands. I have not posted here since the beginning Charlie but now seems like the time again.

Those of us who believe in the power of good thoughts, prayers, mojo, whatever ya' got, are sadly all too well aware that like medical science that is so wonderful yet sometimes fails, we too fail in the end....because for all of us there sadly is an end. But I tell you what we do better......We'll be around here and easy to reach to offer whatever we can for as long as you need it.

Way too many people leave us far too soon. Frankly I have always thought that "far too soon" meant something different for each person. Matter of fact, I think we have both known a few who........let's skip that and move on........

The ones we love though will always leave far too soon. When they go they leave huge holes in our hearts. As time passes the joys of remembering become less sad and begin to refill the holes with a happiness that is different than before, but a happiness just the same.   Additionally the warmth and friendship of those who love you will also help to fill that hole. For that we are here.

Keep smiling through the tears and make each day, hour, and minute, a sharing of the love you have for each other. Hell man, that's the only thing this life is about......loving each other.

Best Mojo and Love from Ohio..........

That's it. I am with all of you and with Spaw, who needs a little Mudcat Mojo too, as do others. Spaw's words and spirit in his own time of need bring this all into focus clearly.

Up Spaw. Up Ann. Up for all and for those that are here just to say they are here to say... UP!

Thanks Charlie. Your sharing has made me stronger, as I have said before. Bless you and Ann.

Hello all you lovely people !! Yesterday was a really lively one for us. An had a little soup and actually ate a chocolate or two as well as pulling me to bits in front of my step-daughters. Today she has been asleep mostly but awake long enough for an Aromatherapy foot massage!!. There is no miracle going to happen but if she can see out her time without fear or pain and with people who love her then I don't think things will be too bad.
Actually things are lousy but, I count my blessings apart from 'losing it' when one of 'our tunes' comes up on my headphones. Today I had; "The way you look tonight" by Frank Sinatra, "Memories are made of this" by Dean Martin and "J'attendrai" by a Fench person in quick succession.   What ann old softie.
I will never cease to thank you all for your concern, love and best wishes.
I'll be in touch fairly soon.

Afternoon here, Charlie. We are surprisingly isolated here, so it was an honor for us to entertain Mudcat's Leadfingers yesterday- our first face-to-face meeting after years of friendship. Suddenly we are not so alone in our hardship as it had seemed.

Perhaps one day you will meet some of the friends who have gather about you here. Until then remember that, in the isolation of such illness, you are indeed surrounded by friends, and the light that love generates.

sometimes it feels like your world stands still other times it feels like it is spinning so fast you cant catch a breath. Take a deep breath, relax in the good moments and push through the bad if you find a dirty great rock in your path hold onto the thought that the path continues once you get by it.

My sincerest condolences to you and yours, Charlie.

The comment above, "It's good to know that she passed without fear or pain." has special meaning for me and perhaps others who have followed Charlie's thread about this for well over 200 posts. Charlie let us know a short time ago that he and Ann were resigned to the outcome expected and that now has come to be. Charlie posted about Ann's sense of humour late in the game we all play and that brought solace not just to Ann and to Charlie but to all who followed his thread.

Thank you, Charlie. Thank you, Ann. You have made my life better by sharing yours with me.

Each time we as a family attended a funeral we stand together and hold hands. Each time one of us felt an emotional fall the hands on either side would squeeze passing us their strength. And so it was we supported each other without the world knowing our business.

Holding hands

They are holding hands and watching
As we watch her slip away
She walks to them and smiles
And takes their hands today.

We are holding hands and watching
As we watch her on her way
Our hands they squeeze and strengthen
To help us through the day

And as we're getting older
Hands one by one let go
But they are holding hands and watching
To strengthen us below.
