I suggest the O.P follows Dereks advice, go to the Session at the Anchor and see what transpires. Quite a few people have tried to organise song and/or music sessions over the years with varying degrees of success !! The Anchor (Nee Volunteer) session has been going for a while and seems relatively settled, Run by Barry Lister and members of "The Claque". Despite Hosting the festival,and having a thriving Ladies Morris team, and its own mumming tradition Sidmouth is not a desperately "Folkie" place the rest of the year, and I'm not sure whether there would be the support for another session. From Lee's post on the other (Honiton) thread it appears that he's already aware of this. (I mention this as someone turned up to a different singaround last Sunday expecting a music session - internet sites, for Devon at least, don't always distinguish between them or describe them accurately.) |

What I am trying to gauge is how many people would be interested in playing some tunes. I hear a few sessions have died so I am thinking a session in a skittle alley out the way so the locals dont get all shitty about people having fun...like they do. My wife and I both play fiddles so theres two and if I can get a Thursday night slot potentially 3 more might be able to make it. I know the Balfour has a skittle alley and my local in Sidford has a back room/skittle alleys that might be good aswell. |

The local people were fine, just the others who were so weird.... But Sidmouth isn't the same without The Forge of course .My first ever Sidmouth was 1965 (same as Pete Coe, I believe !). |

My comments where directed at an earlier poster who complained about the " Snobby Attitude" of some inhabitants of Sidmouth. I would like to see a session for musicians, in Sidmouth, as a melodeon player myself,( with a concertina playing Wife ) I would enjoy the occasional chance to play informally in a friendly environment, unfortunately previous attempts to organise such a session have met with little success, I think the problem is that there are not that many folk musicians (as opposed to singers ) in Sidmouth, and those that are there are already involved in other musical activities, and tend to travel out of town to attend sessions in neighbouring areas. I wish you success with any attempts to start a session, and if you do get something going I will certainly join you as and when I can Merry Christmas !! Henry Piper. In fact, Budleigh Salterton was majors and below, Sidmouth was majors and above, a reference to the rank of the retired army types who moved there. There was a considerable hostility to the festival - I remember pubs with signs in the window saying 'No Festival People'. I remember being in the market buying some sandwiches and hearing the stallholder say that he had to serve 'these festival people' but he'd rather not. Things have changed for the better, so I don't recognise the picture of a town of happy locals recently invaded by snobby Londoners. And no-one ever ever ever called it 'Siddy'. 'Sidders' maybe, but never 'Siddy'. |

Lee, Since you now live in Honiton, and have said yourself that there seems to be little or no folk activity in that area, why not give some thought to starting something yourself?? rather than having to rely on other people to get you to more distant venues this would kill two birds with one stone, in that it would hopefully provide an additional Musical resource to the Town and enable you to play with other musicians without the hassle of having to find lifts . Public Transport is not brilliant in this area unfortunately, especially in the evenings !! As I said in my earlier Post, Sidmouth, despite the Festival, and Having a local Morris Team, and a Mumming Team, does not seem to have a huge number of Folk Musicians in the immediate area, and past experience suggests that there are not enough to sustain a regular session such as you envisage. The upstairs Room at The Anchor, where the Singers currently meet would seem to be a good bet, as they are already hosting a Folk song session there. there is also the sailing club, or the Marine bars which has recently had a revamp, and is trying to shed its rather "seedy" image. (I don't know whether it will be on/well attended next month as it clashes with the Sidmouth festival.) As far as I know it's normally well attended and there may be musicians there who live east of Exeter who don't visit Mudcat but would be interested in your session. |

It's also closed this Sunday (13th July) as there's a town event, "The Longest Table."
