Hello

I am thinking of starting a nice mixed style instrumental session in Sidmouth but just need to find out if there is actually any call for one. I have noticed a couple have died recently (sessions that is)so is there anyone on here that would like a session in Sidmouth? Or used to go one? Questions, questions.....

Richard, Sidmouth exists all 52 weeks of the year, not just during Folk Week :)

Ah - I thought the reference was to Sidmouth the festival.

Try contacting the local mummers, they may know people.

There is a monthly folk club/singaround, formerly in the Volunteer, now in the Anchor, run by Barry Lister and others. Suggest you contact Barry.

Indeed we do Know People Richard !!
I suggest the O.P follows Dereks advice, go to the Session at the Anchor and see what transpires. Quite a few people have tried to organise song and/or music sessions over the years with varying degrees of success !!
The Anchor (Nee Volunteer) session has been going for a while and seems relatively settled, Run by Barry Lister and members of "The Claque".
Despite Hosting the festival, and having a thriving Ladies Morris team, and its own mumming tradition Sidmouth is not a desperately "Folkie" place the rest of the year, and I'm not sure whether there would be the support for another session.

The monthly "session" at the Anchor is, in fact, a singaround with the focus on the songs rather than tunes (in fact I can't remember anyone who has "just" played and instruments themselves are relatively thin on the ground). From Lee's post on the other (Honiton) thread it appears that he's already aware of this. (I mention this as someone turned up to a different singaround last Sunday expecting a music session - internet sites, for Devon at least, don't always distinguish between them or describe them accurately.)

Hello All

So we just have a sing around which I hear is really good In Sidmouth. What I am trying to gauge is how many people would be interested in playing some tunes. I hear a few sessions have died so I am thinking a session in a skittle alley out the way so the locals dont get all shitty about people having fun...like they do. My wife and I both play fiddles so theres two and if I can get a Thursday night slot potentially 3 more might be able to make it.
I know the Balfour has a skittle alley and my local in Sidford has a back room/skittle alleys that might be good aswell.

'Fun' is most definitely NOT allowed in Sidmouth, other than when Barry Lister is in town, of course, who will have everyone doubled up in stitches.

I've just booked an overnight stay during Folk Week, on the Wednesday, when those lovely Oysterboyzies will be playing at The Ham Marquee..

The couple of times I've been to Sidders (thread drift setting in) I've had great fun (and a steaming row with Leadfingers on one visit, but I think it's all over now).

Oh, PLENTY of Fun during the festival, Richard, I was talking about the rest of the year...

Much as I miss the town of Sidmouth, the beauty of it, etc...and I do miss that *terribly*, I don't miss the folks who'd moved to the town, taking it over, many of whom were the biggest bunch of London snobs I've ever met...

The local people were fine, just the others who were so weird....

I could move back to Siddy tomorrow, were I able to afford to, just ignore The Snobby Ones, but heyho, I won't ever be able to afford to do that, sadly...   :0(

Sidmouth in the 196os was very much a "folkie" place all year round; I used to go there a lot and stay at "The Winter Gardens " (end of Fore Street ) and to clubs in the area ; Weymouth (Fountain Hotel) Dorchester (The Chequers ) and Yeovil (The Half Moon) plus Exeter of course, and The White Post at Marston Magna ; never a dull moment or an idle day ! But Sidmouth isn't the same without The Forge of course .My first ever Sidmouth was 1965 (same as Pete Coe, I believe !).

Make the effort to integrate, don't come here with the intention of changing things and making the town what you think it should be, just enjoy it for what it it. Just because it hosts a big Folk festival, doesn't mean that everyone her likes folk music, or is a closet morris dancer !!
Most people in Sidmouth, both incomers and people whose families have lived here for generations are just great if your prepared to fit in.

Lee, I hope your rather negative sounding comment was not addressed to me, as a result of my last post !!
My comments where directed at an earlier poster who complained about the " Snobby Attitude" of some inhabitants of Sidmouth.
I would like to see a session for musicians, in Sidmouth, as a melodeon player myself,( with a concertina playing Wife ) I would enjoy the occasional chance to play informally in a friendly environment, unfortunately previous attempts to organise such a session have met with little success, I think the problem is that there are not that many folk musicians (as opposed to singers ) in Sidmouth, and those that are there are already involved in other musical activities, and tend to travel out of town to attend sessions in neighbouring areas.
I wish you success with any attempts to start a session, and if you do get something going I will certainly join you as and when I can
Merry Christmas !!
Henry Piper. A.K.A Old Father Christmas, Sidmout Mummers.

Back in the Stone Age (ok, 1960's) when I moved to Devon, Sidmouth was known as a retirement town. In fact, Budleigh Salterton was majors and below, Sidmouth was majors and above, a reference to the rank of the retired army types who moved there. There was a considerable hostility to the festival - I remember pubs with signs in the window saying 'No Festival People'. I remember being in the market buying some sandwiches and hearing the stallholder say that he had to serve 'these festival people' but he'd rather not. Things have changed for the better, so I don't recognise the picture of a town of happy locals recently invaded by snobby Londoners. And no-one ever ever ever called it 'Siddy'. 'Sidders' maybe, but never 'Siddy'.

I wasnt really looking for a discussion on whether Sidmouth is friendly. Everywhere else music seems to override differences. I have been going to various sessions since moving to Exeter (before Honiton). No-one seems to know anyone who lives out here? Odd. Still I am glad to here theres a session at the Anchor. Still looking for the shared transport which seems to be lost in the thread. hanks

Lee, Since you now live in Honiton, and have said yourself that there seems to be little or no folk activity in that area, why not give some thought to starting something yourself?? rather than having to rely on other people to get you to more distant venues this would kill two birds with one stone, in that it would hopefully provide an additional Musical resource to the Town and enable you to play with other musicians without the hassle of having to find lifts .
Public Transport is not brilliant in this area unfortunately, especially in the evenings !!
As I said in my earlier Post, Sidmouth, despite the Festival, and Having a local Morris Team, and a Mumming Team, does not seem to have a huge number of Folk Musicians in the immediate area, and past experience suggests that there are not enough to sustain a regular session such as you envisage.
Cheers Henry.

My Apologies,!! I thought you were the gentleman from Honiton.
Do let me know what the outcome is, I would be interested in coming occasionally if a session does materialise, unfortunately I could not guarantee my availability to help in organisation, but good luck with it.
Possibilities might be, The Rising Sun, or Red Lion in Sidford/Sidbury, The Balfour At woolbrook, The Black Horse. The upstairs Room at The Anchor, where the Singers currently meet would seem to be a good bet, as they are already hosting a Folk song session there. there is also the sailing club, or the Marine bars which has recently had a revamp, and is trying to shed its rather "seedy" image.
Henry.

I am going to talk to the People at the Rising sun tonight as they have a room out the back which might be good for a session. I tried the Anchor (which would of been perfect) but every good night was booked up.

Hello Female (sorry dont know your name). I think a couple offered you a list a while back? We are based in Sidford and as soon as I get something sorted I will let you know. We are new to the area aswell so we need to get round all the pubs (hard life I know) to find not just a good venue but also a good landlord that wants us all there.

Two music pubs but not folk, Plenty of good places but not accessable. Where were you before? If howevert you meant lift they were talking about the festival. Transport is fine during the day? Well possible.

Well done Lee, Its a good Pub, The Mummers often use it for Meetings and Social Gatherings, Skittle Alley does get cold in the Winter Though ! Hope to meet you there once you get going.
To Both, You Lee, and the unidentified Lady from Honiton I seem to have inadvertently been at least partially responsible for some thread confusion and conflation, by failing to realise that you are in fact TWO separate Guests, please accept my apologies. !!

Henry ... I don't think the confusion was actually your fault. Both guests actually failed to identify themselves by name, hence the confusion. I presume they are new to Mudcat, and therefore would not be aware that unnamed posts by guests would normally be zapped by the Mud Elves ? Good to hear that a home has been found for a worthwhile cause.

Guest:Lee - it might be worth your while going to the English music session (I'm presuming you're not after Irish sessions which tend to take place at different pubs/times) at the Globe in Topsham. (I don't know whether it will be on/well attended next month as it clashes with the Sidmouth festival.) As far as I know it's normally well attended and there may be musicians there who live east of Exeter who don't visit Mudcat but would be interested in your session.

Guest (11 July 10.51) - Topsham Folk Club closes throughout August. It's also closed this Sunday (13th July) as there's a town event, "The Longest Table." The English session is normally on the first Thursday of each month and, although some of the folk club organisers and regulars go, it's separate to the club.

It matters in as much as we don't know who we are talking to, or whether you are another anonymous guest who may be posting to the same thread at the same time- hence the confusion above.

It's impossible to keep up a useful conversation unless you know you bare talking to the same person you started talking to earlier!
