05 Jan 00 - 06:15 PM (#158583) Subject: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum This is a continuation of the thread about Looking for Scottsdale Music. I am going to be in Phoenix for the evening on Thursday and will be playing the Open Stage show at The Fiddler's Dream Coffee House. I would love to meet any Mudcatters who are able to stop by. Please consider attending the show, to play or just listen. I'd love to meet some Mudcatters in real life! |
05 Jan 00 - 08:59 PM (#158704) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Liam: Do you have any idea what time you will be at Fiddler's? I have a dinner engagement but plan to drop by the Fiddler's after. I look forward to meeting you. DougR |
05 Jan 00 - 09:26 PM (#158736) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Liam: Based on his posting to some previous postings, I think Gargoyle may live in this area. Perhaps he will join us. DougR |

06 Jan 00 - 05:47 PM (#159174) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum ... just finished the day's business meetings, so I haven't called yet, but if I can reach a human regarding the time, I will post. Otherwise, I'll just show up about 7:30 - 8:00. I don't imagine they'd start sooner than that. See y'all there! |
06 Jan 00 - 07:03 PM (#159227) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Well, I still never reached a human, but the new message says their weekend hours are 7 to 11, so I'll make sure I'm there by 7. If I have any choice, I'll try to get on for 8-ish, but these things are often beyond one's control, so I'll take what I can get. I'm looking forward to saying hello to Mudcatters, all. By the way you'll know because I look like this and my real name is Jed. See y'all there! |
06 Jan 00 - 07:05 PM (#159228) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Liam and Gargoyle: I telephoned the Fiddler's Dream and it appears they don't have open mic night tonight. Doesn't appear they are open on Thursday night at all. I'm going to check by phone again around 7pm tonight. Will you be in town Saturday, Liam? I do plan to go there Saturday night as I said in an earlier message. Doug Richards |
06 Jan 00 - 07:08 PM (#159232) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Doug - yesterday's message claimed that they wer open for their usual Open mic on wed and Thurs of this week (but posted no times). Today's message does not specify tonight's events, but yesterday's message quoted dates, and the open stage event. I believe they ARE open. |
06 Jan 00 - 07:11 PM (#159235) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum come to think, I left a message yesterday too, stating thatI was coming in from Dallas for Thu night, and wanted to get on the guest performer list. I didn;t leave a return phone call no. - but I suspect they would have specified that they weren;t open in today's message, if they were not. I believe they are regularl open from 7 - 11. I'm going to arrive at the place at about 7 to find out. I gather I'm staying about 18 minutes away, acording to my Mapquest directions! |
07 Jan 00 - 12:44 AM (#159418) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Shucks shoot, Liam. I'm sorry I didn't just go on over to the Fiddler's. I felt sure though that they would have mentioned that there would be a session if there was one so I didn't. I hope Gargoyle had more faith than I did. Hope to catch you next trip you make to Phoenix. Doug P. S. My wife was a Dallas girl. We both graduated from the University of North Texas in Denton. Are you a native Texan or just work in Dallas? |
07 Jan 00 - 01:04 AM (#159423) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Doug - I am not a native Texan. I was born in Boston. We moved to Texas in 1986. My middle son graduated from UNT in 1996. I gotta say the Fiddler's Dream is a great place. Pure folk, pure acoustic. It's a very unassuming place in a small building, but a great group of players showed up and performed. I enjoyed the evening very much. I am sure I'll be back. I received inviations to perform at other PHX area shows, and I am very tempted to get myself back up here. I'll certainly let you know. |
07 Jan 00 - 02:07 AM (#159432) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: _gargoyle Well the show did go on .... right nice.
It certainly is an unasuming little place tucked into a backyard like that. Do you think it is somehow connected to the Quaker Church? |
07 Jan 00 - 09:45 AM (#159509) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum gargoyle - you were there? Could it be that we were both there and didn't say hello? That would be disappointing. Is it possible that you ran out of gas on the way? |
07 Jan 00 - 12:15 PM (#159578) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Sure sorry I missed the show last night. While I'm there tonight I'm going to suggest to a friend who is active in Fiddler's activities that if they are going to put a recording on the telephone, they should give ALL the hours the place will be operating. They probablly just assume EVERYBODY interested knows the hours. Gargoyle, sorry you didn't let yourself be known to Liam. Maybe next time. I'm going to check with my friend to see if there is a connection to the church. DougR |
07 Jan 00 - 04:52 PM (#159683) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum I heard that the Church owns the building. I believe that there is a infomral, or loose connection to the church. Gargoyle who are you? There were only a few folks there who weren't introduced, and who didn't play - or did you play? Now am really curious! |
07 Jan 00 - 05:11 PM (#159689) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: Terapln Liam, enjoyed very much meeting you last night. Also very much enjoyed your playing and the "shrunken" guitar you brought. Fidd's isn't connected to the friend's except that we pay 'em to use the place. As you now know Fidd's is a very low key place where just about anything can (and does) get played. Where else can you hear muddy Waters, The Violent Femme's, slightly X-rated comedy songs and great fingerpicked Irish tunes on the same night? Hope to see you next time around. Mike |
07 Jan 00 - 10:00 PM (#159781) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Mike/Terapln - Yeah, it was a great place, and I enjoyed the music very much. As you say; Muddy Waters, Loudon Wainwright, Lyle Lovett, Elvis, Led Zeplin, and the Violent Femms. And all great performances! Great place. I will be back, one day! |
07 Jan 00 - 10:13 PM (#159783) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum OK - I hafta to admit, I'm baffled. Who's who??? Sounds like gargoyle was there, and Mike was there ... neither spoke up about a Mudcat connection, so I presumed no Mudcatters made it (which I knew was likely) ... now I figure that two of y'all made it, and I don't know who's who! ... Let's see, I think I gave my baby Larrive to three guitar players to try, so that means Mike, that you are one of those three ... hmmm, interesting night! And gargoyle - did you perform? did you arrive late? |
12 Jan 00 - 12:31 PM (#161705) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum This is drivin' me crazy! I played and listend through two hours of great music at this folk club in Phoenix with two Mudcatters ... and no one identified themselves? I just have to chuckle at my own stupidity for not figuring it out while I was there!! At any rate, I put up a few photos of the event here. If my guess is correct, I've captured on the first page one, maybe two Mudcatters ... (in addition to me, that is) ... or one Mudcatter and one friend of a Mudcatter. At any rate I enjoyed the evening, and heard some great music. Maybe next time we can have a beer too! Please do, y'all - give me at least a hint! |
13 Jan 00 - 02:05 PM (#162251) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Liam: For the life of me, I can't understand why you are not getting a response. Neither can I understand why, if fellow Mucatters were in attendance, they didn't make themselves known to you. Sounds to me that Mike may not be a regular here. Did you mention Mudcat to anyone that night? And how to find it on the Net? DougR |
13 Jan 00 - 03:59 PM (#162300) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Doug - well; it is a bit odd, but maybe there are some extenuating circumstances. I know you and I were wondering if they were even open, in this thread above ... so I figured some might be put off by that, because it was unclear. Then I had a real problem locating the place and knew that others might, too. So I arrived there, expecting it was unlikely that other Mudcatters would make, but I did hope for the best and began telling my Mudcat story to each new face that arrived. When th show started; there was no talking. It was a bit like a library! It was actually a great environment for performers, but no conducive to chatting. At the end of the night,I talked a bit with a few folks, a few tried my Larrivee Parlor guitar. I had already given up on meeting any Mudcatters, but did ask one or two more (obviously the wrong ones). I am not too worried about it, though I wish it were not so ... I understand one's wish to preserve their privacy ... and I did point my camera around pretty freely! It was a great show, and great fun. The music was a real treat ... and I am pretty sure I captured at least one of the anonymous Mudcatters in my photos (at the link above). I have a couple more that didn't turn out as well, so I didn't post them. Yes Doug, it's a bit odd ... but perhaps understandable! Max - thanks for the refresh. Maybe one of these shy guys will speak up, eventually! |
13 Jan 00 - 04:36 PM (#162315) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: folk1234 I've been following the post-open-mic portion of this thread with great interest. How strange! Jeb, are you begining to believe that you are the only 'other' mudcat? All these posts and responses, personalities, and lack thereofs, talents, and lack thereofs, in-depth knowledge of music, history, society, on and on and on, perhaps are all coming from the one 'other other' mudcat. Gatherings? Are they real or sureal? I saw my photograph in one of the event gatherings. But was I really there? Or was this a case of virtual trickery by the 'other other'. Some catters claim to make CDs, pottery, jewelery, 'possums, and other objects 'd art. In fact I have some of these items. But did they come from real people? Or did they all come from the other-other? Was there a peculiar, musty, rich and earthy odor at the Fid? Was it damp and foggy? do you even remember? Me'thinks we have entered the sixth dimension of reality. |
13 Jan 00 - 04:49 PM (#162323) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: Bert Actually liam_devlin is the ONLY real Mudcatter. All the others other are computer generated and are the result of Max's fantastic programming abilities. |
13 Jan 00 - 05:15 PM (#162336) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DonMeixner Liam, Had I been there I would have walked right up to you, stuck out my hand and said "Hi! I'm Don Meixner." Wish I could have been there. Don |
13 Jan 00 - 06:15 PM (#162368) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Don - I wish you had been there! Folk1234 - Of course, those thoughts you express are along the lines I am thinking! I have noticed posts among some threads that appear to be the same person with different names (not that I was particularly bothered by it) but it does make me realize 'trickery' is quite possible here. But I judge a tree by its fruits, so I am not worried by trickery. When I played park league basketball or when I competed in business, if I recognized someone was cheating, I didn;t worry about it; I set my mind to win anyway (and not cheat myself). So there is a surreal cloud around this Phoenix thing, that amounts to intrigue! I am curious as hell, but find it a bit amusing as well! I hope to return there soon and in fact will probably go up the week after next (Jan 25 - 27). I also hope to book some dates in Phoenix later on in the Spring with my music partners from Dallas ... so I may get a chance to say hello to the 'other' Mudcatter even if there's really only two of us! Oh, by the way; it's Jed. |

14 Jan 00 - 09:16 AM (#162702) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum ... by the way; I do have a few more pics I want to post from this night at the Fiddler's Dream, but they need a bit of work, (my photography work ain't the greatest). So I'll refresh this thread when I get a third page of pics up. |
12 Feb 00 - 02:09 PM (#177212) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum refresh for new Phoenix thread ... |
12 Feb 00 - 03:13 PM (#177230) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Liam: Have you been back to Phoenix? I just saw the message today where you mentioned coming back January 25-27! Let me know if you are coming back to the Fiddler and barring illness or death, I'll be there! DougR |
12 Feb 00 - 06:23 PM (#177313) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: JedMarum Doug - I will be returning to Phoenix on May 21 to play at the Fiddler's Dream. They will be advertizing the show closer to that date, and I will have details posted on my website as well. I really hope to see you there, and plase bring friends! |
12 Feb 00 - 08:50 PM (#177375) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: Mark Cohen Hey, how far are you guys from Tucson? (I know that' probably a dumb question, but I flunked Carmen Sandiego and am too lazy to look for a map.) I'm going to be at a conference in Tucson on Pediatric Integrative Medicine next weekend (Feb. 18-20), and would love to hear some real live music or do some real live singing. The conference will be at the Westin La Paloma. Do you Arizonans (Arizonians? Arizonananans?) know of anything going on in Tucson that weekend? Aloha, Mark |
13 Feb 00 - 02:10 PM (#177683) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Mark, I believe a saw a posting of activities going on in Tucson elsewhere in the Threads in answer to your question. Phoenix is about an hour and a half drive north of Tucson. Speed limits are 75 most of the way and if traffic is light, you can probably drive it in a bit less time. DougR |

15 Feb 00 - 01:23 AM (#178557) Subject: RE: Mudcatters Meet in Phoenix THU 1/7 From: DougR Well, Garg, I don't normally plan that far ahead myself but my daughter, her son and my son invited me to Disneyland during that time period, and being an old fan of Mickey Mouse, I found it hard to say no. We plan to drive back from L.A. on that Sunday though, and if we get back in time perhaps both of us can greet Liam at the Fiddler's. Hope so. DougR |
