29 Apr 02 - 04:06 AM (#700237) Subject: RE: Mudcat Brussels 2002 - nearly there! From: mooman Dear Friends, Slightly off-topic here but of possible interest to some... As though they knew the EuroGathering was the same weekend, the "European Institutions" are opening their doors to one and all on Saturday 4 May under the banner "Let's get to know each other"! Quoting more or less from the advertisement in the local English-language "What's On": "A day of fun and information is planned by:
- the European Parliament "Candidate countries will present themselves, there is a full programme of lively family entertainment AND you can meet and debate with MEPs...doors open at 10 o'clock..." "The celebration is joined by the enlargement candidate countries so you can experience tomorrow's Europe today. There will be traditional food, wine tastings and (beware musical relevance link coming up here...) folklore..." "At the Commission, visitors can meet Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin (the only one of them who seems to talk to anybody) and help tell him what to spend his Euro 17 billion research budget on (I can actually help with this part...!), see and collect the new Euro coins (specially arranged for you Andreas...there was no need to worry at all!), learn about enlargement (no jokes please 'Spaw!), watch a ballet from P.A.R.T.S. (I don't know either...) and (wait for it...) visit the Commission's meeting room..." Best of all our old friend the 95 bus (stop Vander Elst 50 metres from Mooland) will drop you almost outside the European Parliament (stop Gare du Luxembourg)! If you are a complete philistine and not interested at all in this wonderful extravaganza brought to you at great expense by the European taxpayer, Mooland will remain available throughout the day for music, song, nattering, drinking, socializing, joking, legpulling, eating or dossing as the mood takes you. Best regards mooman (who does NOT work for any of the European Institutions but, as a good European citizen, felt obliged to pass this valuable information on...) |
29 Apr 02 - 04:25 AM (#700241) Subject: RE: Mudcat Brussels 2002 - nearly there! From: MudGuard Thanks, Richard, sounds interesting - especially the coin collection possibilities... Only two more days of work plus the rest of today ... (Wednesday 1st of May is a public holiday - Labour Day - in Germany) Some more question regarding my traveling from the Airport to Mooland: will a one-hour ticket be enough? Are two-hour tickets available - or do I simply use two one-hour tickets (of a 10trip ticket)? What are the custom regulations when crossing the border from Belgium into Mooland? Are Visa required? ;-) Andreas/MudGuard |
29 Apr 02 - 04:49 AM (#700247) Subject: RE: Mudcat Brussels 2002 - nearly there! From: mooman Dear Andreas, I think the airport bus from Zaventem to Gare du Luxembourg (or Quartier Leopold ...I'm not sure how they announce the stop) has a special ticket purchasable at the airport or maybe on the bus itself. When changing to the dear old 95 bus (direction Heiligenborre) at Gare du Luxembourg.Quartier Leopold the usual one hour ticket (you can get them in ones, fives of tens...the tens work out the cheapest by far) applies (you can also use the same one-hour ticket on trams and metros, changing as often as you like within the hour, just revalidate the ticket in the machine on the metro/tram/bus). No special visa is required to cross from Belgium into Mooland although the border is closely monitored and controlled by two specially-trained attack cats...one hairy and white and one smooth and black. If you successfully get past those, all formalities have been completed. Looking forward to seeing you! mooman P.S. You will be staying at our friends Glen and Ron, five minutes straightforward walk from Mooland. On account of your Gargantuan size I have, during intense negotiations last night, finally persuaded them not to put you in the Teletubbies bed! (8>) Richard |
29 Apr 02 - 05:37 AM (#700263) Subject: RE: Mudcat Brussels 2002 - nearly there! From: MudGuard Me and Gargantuan size? Are you sure you do not mix me up with someone else? I am not 2m, not even 1.95m, just small 1.94m... (76.37" or 6'4.37"). There is no need for a bed (especially not a teletubbies bed). All I need is floorspace, I will bring camping mattress and sleeping bag. Is the Breydel Building (Rue d'Auderghem 45) where the Euro coin corner will be near the Gare du Luxembourg as well? When I entered that address in the Internet town map you provided on the Eurogathering page, it always an Avenue d'Auderghem?! I will buy a street map of Brussels this afternoon... cu soon! Andreas/MudGuard |
29 Apr 02 - 05:52 AM (#700266) Subject: RE: Mudcat Brussels 2002 - nearly there! From: mooman Dear Andreas, Well compared with Lady McMoo and The Viking you seem pretty big! Perhaps Gargantuan was an over-exaggeration...just Finn McCool size! I was only joking about the Teletubbies bed...Letty can go into that! I'm not entirely sure where the Euro coins will be...most of the activities are centred round the European Parliament building which is right behind Gare du Luxembourg. If the coins are in the Breydel Building it is not too far (maybe 10 minutes walk) from there and is on Avenue d'Auderghem (close to Rond Point Schuman) as the online map correctly says! See you soon! Richard |
29 Apr 02 - 06:26 AM (#700277) Subject: RE: Mudcat Brussels 2002 - nearly there! Leaving at around 6 PM, so I should arrive ninish. The webmap tells me to go via the Netherlands, then Antwerp. Seems strange. But it might have something to do with awful Belgian roads. If you see this, Richard, I booked at the accomodation you PMed me about weeks ago, but I also cannot read PMs right now (not Mudcat's fault). But I'll be in Brussels tomorrow (Friday) evening at about 9 p.m. and I'll try to find the restaurant. Rough guess: I'll be a late comer at about half past ten.
