Help: Sessions in Scotland?

Please, please, can any 'cats' point me towards pub sessions in Scotland, around Argyll to be precise. I don't think I can cope without music for two whole weeks!

We usually go to Ireland & I've always been able to find really good info on the net so that I get a decent 'fix' of local trad music. But we decided to hunt the monster Pike in Loch Awe this year & I'm drawing a blank on all the pages I've been to. Just my luck!

There is music in Scotland, I just know there is!!!

There's music in Scotland, right enough, but there might not be much near where you're going... the best bet I can think of is Oban which may not be too far away depending exactly where you're going to be. I know there is a Sunday session somewhere in Oban but I'm afraid I don't know the name of the pub, sorry....

Hmm, yeah... I know that I thought about Oban, and in places like Fort William, you'd probably be sorted. Two years ago, we were up in the North West - Ullapool etc, and there's plenty of stuff going on there. But to be honest, I've had a look fr stuff a couple of times for you, and I'm not turning up all that much in that area. I'd try the local tourist office, they're getting a bit mre switched on to these opportunities..

Sorry can't be more help...

Ironically, there's more happening session-wise in the bigger towns ( I think)

Cheers

Steven

Aha! I am reliably informed that you will find a session in The Oban Inn on Sundays from 2pm onwards. I guess if you head there the locals would be able to point you towards anything else that may be happening...

Hooray! The Oban Inn it is then!!! Thank you all so much for looking around for me, I was beginning to think I was going really mad.

It's so easy to find local sessions in Ireland on the web - they're everywhere & the best ones are usually hidden in the fold of a mountain. Strange that the towns have turned up to be the best in Scotland.

The tourist office will be my next try!

Someone sent me a web-address of www.strathspeyinmay.com for 'a festival, with a strong emphasis on the playing and learning of traditional music, held annually in Grantown-on-Spey' which is on in a couple of weeks time, but is a bit far for me to go this year. May be of interest to other cats! Thank you all very, very much - I'm getting excited about going up there now! Be well!

Glad to be of assistance!

I found some other stuff which might help: Last year's TMSA listings for Argyll, Stirling, Trossachs - it has contact numbers for folk clubs and stuff

Knockengorroch Festival in Galloway 17-19 May

Highland Festival in Inverness 24th May to 9th June

These last two will involve a bit of a drive but you never know, you might be interested... :-)

What a great site that Inverness one is! Have taken all info on the off-chance that a drive is in order, but I'm pinning my hopes on the Oban Inn & it's locals at the moment. Thanks again, oh wee one! May there always be music for you..... Scotland here we come!!!!!

It's next year (2003) already & we're returning to Loch Awe (wonderful area) for another two weeks holiday in mid-May.

The Oban Inn in Oban (strangely enough) had a wonderful weekly session/singaround going on Sunday afternoons last year.   A lovely crowd of musicians & they even arranged an evening session so that friends who came to stay with us would be able to get their music 'fix'. Does anyone know if this is still happening?

And is there anything else going on locally these days?

There has been a recent thread about sessions in Scotland, but it didn't really extend to where we're going :-(

Bit of a treck from the wilds of Loch Awe's shores Leo, but thanks :-) I had noticed that Glasgow has a thriving scene which is good news!

There is something somewhere in Killin,Which is not too far and I think in Inveraray. I will try and get details. Otherwise have a look on Alba folk page . Have a look on the Previous Links. for info.

noddy: thanks very much, hope there is something in Inverary, that's really close :-) Killin looks to be over the East coast unless I'm looking at the wrong map. Crossing fingers that you'll find something for me....

Tried all old links & could only get into the Highland one. Tried the old albafolk addy & not sure if I'm getting last year's web-page, doesn't look up-to-date anyway. My bookmarked TMSA seems quite old too :-)

Anyone know if the Island of Luing is still locked up between 6pm & 6am?

Wee Piper, I couldn't get into the Argyll site - don't know why. Geoff and I will be up by Loch Linhe for the week June 14th to 21st, and we'd dearly love to visit a few clubs. Any info you could provide would be much appreciated. I've already noted the one in Oban. What about on Mull, or in the Port Appin area?

Sorry about that last post of nothing . Dont know what happened.

Killin is on Loch Tay at the west end.

Isle of Luing Locked?? Isnt that the island with the Bridge over the Atlantic as access. and the strange pup just next to the bridge where highlanders took off there kilts and tartan before crossing to the mainland because the wearing of them was banned by English Law.

Did you get on to the club and session page on Alba?

noddy: this is my old alba bookmark & it doesn't look very up to date to me - is this the one you mean??

I'll have a look for Killin (Thanks) on my proper maps when I get home - these net-mapping pages aren't always very good!

The Bridge over the Atlantic crosses from the mainland to the Island of Seil. There is a pub just past the bridge - I assume that's the one with your interesting history *g*

The island of Luing is at the other end of Seil and can only be reached by ferry which didn't operate last year between 6pm & 6am. There is no pub on the island & I should think that they must have musicians there - long cold nights etc. etc.

Alio: I'm having trouble with the TMSA site too - I can't even get in from my old bookmark now - but this site may be of use. Am not sure if weepiper will drop in here, that message was from last year - maybe you could PM?

there was a thread on this about a week or so ago. I linked to a thread some time before that. Blackfriars Music in Edinborough have the info, the magazine, and the website.

Yes it seems to be right. But there should be some link to Edinburgh folk clubs and sessions, which give some info on things just north of the central belt. Silly me cant find it at present. I will have another look and post what I find.

There is a Perthshire site but most things are probably to far east for you. Have a look in the tourist information site for the area. might be more there.

Thanks noddy - will keep browsing too. Have emailed lots of pubs locally to see if we can get anything going. During our first week in Ardbrecknish the local pub is happy for us to strum & sing in the bar so that's a good start. Looking forward to the Oban sessions on the Sundays too :-)
