"Anything going on in Shropshire?" is getting much too long to handle. Let's continue here.

...and I feel like a fraud now because this isn't quite Shropshire, but it's near enough to be of interest:

Message from Rees Wesson

Hi Folks We have a one off informal music session next Monday, 27th May. It's at The Kings Head in Guilsfield (2 miles out of Welshpool) - real ale, mad landlord, etc. We're very lucky to have Bayou Seco from New Mexico coming along for the evening. They have spent a lifetime gathering traditional songs and tunes from the Southern States, including some unusual Native American and Spanish material and are well worth seeing. They also have a wicked sense of humour.
Hope to see you there.
Rees Wesson

I was just about to get around to doing this - thanks W. We've also got Bayou Seco at the Bishop's Castle Weekend, helping with a dance workshop, and there are a couple Bayou Seco links, here and here

This one just came to my attention

On midsummer weekend, 22nd-23rd June the Shropshire Bedlams and Martha Rhoden's Tuppenny Dish have two of the most dynamic "young" morris sides as guests for the weekend - DOG ROSE MORRIS and BLACK SWAN RAPPER.
The sides will be dancing in Ludlow on Saturday from 11.00am to 3.00pm Saturday evening there is a midsummer Ceilidh at the Community College Bishop's Castle with the highly acclaimed young West Yorkshire Band BEDLAM.
Tickets £4 (£2.50 conc.) available from Stuart Altman on 01743 242055 or Lee Horrocks 01588 242055.
Sunday the sides take part in the traditional Bishop's Castle Rush Cart bearing from stone house hospital to the Church and then back to the Three Tuns for more dancing and the odd beer or two !

I'll tell you again here as well in t'other places-I was going to call a halt to the session at The Buffalo in Clun but don't worry! I've just come back from the sesh and have a tale to tell. I suggested to our little throng that maybe we should have a little summer holiday. They were not happy! Apparantly they (5 people) look forward very much to our little song/tunes 'club' every month that it has become the highlight of their month! That's Clun life for you! They build their 2nd Wednesday around it so that their evenings are free. What on earth could I do? I can't stop something they enjoy so much now can I? It doesn't matter that there are only a few of us, if they want to be there and look forward to it who am I to put a stop to it? So if you're in the area 2nd Wednesday of the month, please come to the singaround/tunes session in Clun, Shropshire- It's small and friendly and I love 'em all!

Sally

Subject: RE: Anything else going on in Shropshire?
From: Watson

I spoke to Mike Raven last night - the Market Drayton festival will not happen this year, but he is putting on a one day festival at Loton Park on Sunday 6 October as Rob said.

The format will be workshops in the morning, concert in the afternoon and a dance with cabaret in the evening.

Guests include Mike Raven (naturally) with Joan Mills, Steve Tilston and John Neilson, Harvey Andrews, Taggart and Wright, Murphy's Marbles, Vital Spark West Gallery Choir, Kicking Alice. The band for the dance will be Skillet.

Loton Park is owned by Sir Michael Leighton who is a poet, so we can expect poetry to feature in this event, with Sir Michael himself and Gladys Mary Coles who is president of the Mary Webb society.

Yes, it was good, wasn't it - although I did think Rapsquillion were far too professional for the rest of us.
Talking to the John the landlord afterwards, he was very pleased with the evening's entertainment, so he'd like it to happen again. We need to decide whether Thursday is the best night for everyone, but we are heading for something regular.

Watson:
I really had a good time last night. Your Spanish song took a bit of working out. Why didn't Vinny play anything?

Anyway I'm glad to hear you're going to make it a regular thing but please not a Wednesday night. A Friday would be good then we can really let our hair down(those with any left that is!!)and we can all sleep in on the Saturday.

Spanish? Was I singing in Spanish? ...well bugger me. Had I been drinking?
I don't know why Vin didn't play. I'm sure someone would have lent him a guitar. Perhaps he's too shy to ask.
Friday is indeed a good suggestion in a hair letting down kind of a way, but there's already more going on on Fridays than any other night of the week - mainly folk clubs as opposed to sessions, but a lot of competition for folkies nevertheless.

Is that the 6 Bells that brews its own beer and was one of the host pubs for the Bishops Castle Folk Weekend earlier this year.
Can we have another one?

Yes Sir Col K but we have a bit of a difference of oppinion about the dates at the moment. I would like it to be the week before Alcester but others in Bishop's Castle would like THE weekend of Alcester. Personally I don't think this is a very good idea. What do you think?Would we lose a lot of people to Alcester? Answers please.

And you'd lose me too, I guess, Sally. (Unless Navy Cut or Bold Heroes were booked to perform I suppose? But even then my heart would be at Alcester.)
What possible reason could there be deliberately to clash the fledgeling Bishop's Castle FF with an established FF which is only 40 miles away and which is more accessible to most of the rest of the country?
Got to go now, as there is a music/song session at the Holly Bush in Alcester - which I count as my local!

All the best.

Yes you would lose many people to Alcester, it is established, good, easily accessible and relatively nearby. Don't do it, go for 1st weekend in June nothing nearby to clash with and near to this years date, i.e. swopped with Chippenham with them back to May bank holiday as usual.
Hope these comments help in your deliberations.

It was a hugely enjoyable night and the landlord would like another one.
So, on Thursday November 21, we'll all gather round once more. All singers and musicians will be welcome. Our hosts John and Lesley will once more provide food.

There is a september weekend, which tends to be a little quieter/different , last year nobody got round to sorting out a date till about a week before with obvious consequences, ended up as an cosy little evening session.
Hope we see you and many others at easter this year.

Sorry about the tardy reply.

There seem to be differences with Keith, who has the franchise for scoff at The Bells. He needs to be serving his diners when we want to be doing our stuff. It came to a bit of a head in May when, contrary to the agreement that Chris thought he had (Keith wouldn't take diners after 8.30), a big party started their meal at a quarter to nine. Personally, I don't see the problem - we worked hard, they joined in and a good time was had by (nearly) all. Anyway, Chris has had enough, Neville, the landlord, doesn't want to get involved, so it's all a bit up in the air.

I think we'll be turning up at the end of September to see what happens.

I was thinking about the 'hijacked session' thread. There have been a few issues lately that make me wonder why co-existence causes so many people problems. What a waste of energy it is, getting on a high horses.

I can't be arsed to be as charming, witty and persuasive as Sal!

Subject: RE: Anything else going on in Shropshire?
From: the lemonade lady

The once a month session at the 6 Bells isn't what it used to be, as with quite a few around here.    A week night or Sunday night, when Keith isn't cooking, might be a solution. The Friday night used to be popular because most people didn't have to go to work the next day. I don't know why it isn't anymore. I'll run it during the week if no one else wants to do it. Which night, when? Any ideas?

Sal

15 Jul 03 - 01:58 PM (#983886)
Subject: RE: Anything else going on in Shropshire?
From: Trevor

I think that the general consensus is that there are enough people who are happy to 'run' it (whatever that means) from amongst the regulars, hence what I said about turning up in September.

Most of the regulars want to continue to have a session (although it sounds like you have a different definition of that word to me!) on a Friday, preferably at The Bells. We just need to either sort things out with Keith or keep going despite the difficulties - Nev won't mind either way.

We may also have a couple of new venues close by - more later.

16 Jul 03 - 06:10 AM (#984304)
Subject: RE: Anything else going on in Shropshire?
From: Watson

I find it strange that some pubs seem to look on sessions as a hindrance while others look on them as an asset.
The landlord of the Grove at Walcot asked us to start a session there. We are always made very welcome - they even feed us - there's usually more food than we can eat.
The session is well attended and regulars at the pub look forward to it. People who would never otherwise listen to folk music have a great time.
In light of discussion in other threads, I should make it clear it's a mixed session, tunes and songs fairly evenly balanced.
...and by the way - it's tomorrow night!

16 Jul 03 - 02:26 PM (#984591)
Subject: RE: Anything else going on in Shropshire?
From: the lemonade lady

I only volunteered because HE was showing signs of not wanting to 'run it' anymore. He never wanted to 'run it' very much in the first place.

'Running it' means making phone calls to chivvy people into coming. *Being diplomatic with the land lord and the chef. Being the person that the landlord can talk to incase of any problems etc. Printing posters and contacting the local newspapers, libraries and music magazines to advertise the 'session'. Some one has to take on that responsibility and sometimes financial outlay.

*So, Trevor, maybe you are the one to sort out things with Keith?

17 Jul 03 - 06:55 AM (#985037)
Subject: RE: Anything else going on in Shropshire?
From: Trevor

Well, surprise surprise, I don't agree with you - although it depends on your definition of a session to an extent.

I think that one of three things will happen - it will stop; it will be 'run' collectively with whoever happens to be in the chair on the night playing the 'MC' (for want of a better term) - as already happens pretty successfully at at least one local venue; the venue and whole nature of the thing will change to become more structured, and somebody is already talking about trying that out.

Personally, I favour the second option and I hope that's the way it goes. I have neither the time or inclination to take it on, particularly in the way you interpret it, although I don't mind doing my bit, as you know.

Gotta go - more in PM if you like.

11 Nov - Bishop's Castle Community College, Shropshire
Coope, Boyes and Simpson - Armistice Day performance of 'In Flanders Fields'
Eye-witness accounts, contemporary poetry and songs specially commissioned for the town of Passchendaele's Peace Concerts bring home the humour and courage of those who took part in the War to end all Wars.

16 Dec – Walcott Hall, Lydbury North, Bishops Castle
Coope Boyes & Simpson, Fi Fraser, Jo Freya, Georgina Boyes
'Fire and Sleet and Candlelight...'
Words and music from a traditional Christmas

With bands of Carollers and Wassail songs, tales of Poachers and Ghosts - and hospitable customs like Mumping and Clementing, the Winter season was a time of fireside celebration and travellers' voices at the door. A combination of traditional stories, customs and carols from the English countryside provides an ususual view of local life at Christmas past and present.

Dik Cameron is very professional - I probably wouldn't particularly choose to go to a gig, but there's no question that he added a lot to last night's session.
It was a good night but it was a bit lacking in leadership, there were too many periods of silence between songs where everybody was being much too polite to start without being asked.
That long song? Sir Hubert Vayne? I've known it for years but someone reminded me of it recently. I could say that if I can remember the story I can remember the words, or I could say that if I pick a song nobody can remember nobody knows if I cock it up!

I posted this earlier...'The once a month session at the 6 Bells isn't what it used to be, as with quite a few around here.    A week night or Sunday night, when Keith isn't cooking, might be a solution. The Friday night used to be popular because most people didn't have to go to work the next day. I don't know why it isn't anymore. I'll run it during the week if no one else wants to do it. Which night, when? Any ideas?'

And this is an E mail I have received...
Sunday Folk Night at The Six Bells, Bishop's Castle

Hi Folks!

As you may have heard, Chris Vowles has decided not to continue running
the Friday Folk Night at The Six Bells.

Most of you will know the problems caused on Friday nights by the number
of diners in the room and the less than sympathetic attitude of the C..
C.. C.. Caterer running the kitchen franchise.

Nev the landlord is sympathetic and wants the Folk Night to continue but
he will not intervene to sort out the Friday night problem.

So a small number of us have agreed to restart the Folk Night but we
have decided to move it from the last Friday to the SECOND SUNDAY in the
month.

We realise that Sunday nights are not ideal for everybody but it does
have the major benefit of being FOOD FREE (with the exception of crisps,
and Pringles etc) as the C.. C.. C.. Caterer does not open the kitchen
on Sunday nights.

The first date for the new Sunday night will be this coming Sunday i.e.
the 12th at approx eight o clock - please make a note in your diary.

Please come along and support your local pub or, if it's not your local,
please come along and support MY local pub.

For Info call : Ian - 01588 638375   or JP - 01588 630015

So there you are then!

Me too - have to stay in and listen to the radio on a Sunday!

By the way, just in case anybody was going to the Belshazzars Feast gig at Lydbury North tonight, don't bother 'cos it's off.

There is, however, a concert by the Helen Chadwick Group, 'A Song in my Foot' at Wem Village Hall tonight. 'Songs, stories and heady rhythms inspired by south America'

More details here along with lots of other stuff happening in the county.

I'm told that The 6 Bells is intended to become a free for all music sesh rather than a singaround, so that people can drink, play and talk, rather that being 'hushed' so that a singer can be heard. What a pity, never mind, we'll have to start a singaround in the 3 Tuns on another night for we folks who like to sing.

I'm hoping to start a proper folk club here in BC, Shropshire. Few floor singers and local artists (if we can collect enough money!)We have a lot of really good performers in this neck of the woods and we don't have a platform for them.

Don't know what night of the month yet,or where, but am open to ideas.
