Lyr Req: Side by Side (Parody)

Subject: Lyr Req: Side by Side
From: GUEST,robloes@onetel.com

I remember some of an old rugby song (I do not think it has any rude words in it!!) sung to the tune of Side by side where the man marries a woman who on their first night starts to take off a whole variety of things including wig, glass eye, false leg etc and ends with the wonderful line "I slept on the chair cos there was more of her there - side by side".
Does any one know the full lyrics and chords? Thanks

Bob

Lyrics as I know them, not sure about chords...

Oh,me wife and I got married last Friday
the preacher said it was my day
and when we got home,we were alone, side by side.

We got ready for bed,then...I nearly dropped dead when
her false teeth and hair, she laid on a chair, side by side.

Then to my amazement,a glass eye she removed
wooden arm, wooden leg,she laid there on the stool

Now me wife and I we are parted, just the same as we started
Now I sleep on the chair,'cause there's more of her there
Side by side.

have a slightly different version of this song for you. The third verse wavers from the rest of the song melody wise, but i cant explain how. an english folk singer called Sheb or shep wooley used to do it. also sung by a group from Co Cork Ireland called natural gas.

I got married on sunday,
The party lasted till monday
As we staggered off home,
To our honeymoon home
Side by side

Started getting ready for bed then,
I nearly dropped dead when,
her teeth and her hair
she placed on the chair
Side bt side.

She took off her left leg,
popped out her glass eye so small
Then along with her padded bra
She placed on the chair by the wall,

Now i'm so broken hearted,
From most of my wife i've been parted,
So i slept on the chair
There was more of her there
Side by side

Actually there is a great version by The Chad Mitchell Trio involving a broke lawyer(Unbelievable already)and a wealthy old maid.

The version in the DT is copyrighted to Warden Music and credited to Jimmy Driftwood; there is no date on it. It's very, very close to the version the Chad Mitchell Trio did back in the early '60s, at least as I remember it.

Ach, I missed the DT version when I was doing crosslinks on these threads today. Defective brides with glass eyes seem to be very common in the experience of folk musicians. The genre has its own classification in the Digital Tradition, #651. Let's see if I can make a link that will pull them up: (click here to search).

Speaking of defective brides, there's at least one about a defective husband: (click here)
I suppose I also have to include this one.

Just as the day it was dawning
When she went to the chest
And she put on her breast's
Side by side"

I have another version, similar to those already posted, but I am short one line. Can anyone help please?

It wasn't long after the wedding
Till tears of regret I was shedding
I dreamt dreams of love
With my little dove
Side by side

First it was her teeth on the table
.................. (I need this line)
Till she laid her cork legs
Out on the bed
Side by side

I stared in blank amazement
At her glass eye so small
And I very nearly fainted
When she hung her hair on the wall
God blimey!

I stood there broken hearted
With half of my wife I had parted
So I slept on the chair
There was more of her there
Side by side

Side by side

Well, I got married last Friday
My new wife stood beside me
When the guests had gone home
We stood alone
Side by Side

We were glad we were wed then
We got ready for bed then
Her teeth and her hair
She laid on a chair
Side by Side

One tin leg to follow,
one glass eye so small
She unscrewed her left arm
And put it on the chair by the wall

I stood there broken hearted
Most of my wife has departed
So I slept by the chair
There was more of her there
Side by Side

I first heard this sung over forty years ago, and when I finally decided to add it to my own repertoire I couldn't find the words (pre-internet days), so I made up my own based upon what I could remember...
We got married on Friday
I really thought it was my day
Till we went to our room,
The new bride and groom
Side by side.

We got ready for bed, then
And I nearly dropped dead, when
Her leg and her hair
She laid on the chair
Side by side

Her glass eye was followed
Closely by her teeth
When she took off her Playtex Long Line
There was nothing underneath.

I was really downhearted
From most of my wife I was parted
So I slept on the chair,
Cos there was more of her there
Side by side.

I really must get a new Folk Processor!

The version I learned in the late sixties was from the Scottish folk singers The Corries:

We go married on Friday,
The Vicar said it was my day,
When they were gone
And we were alone,
Side By Side.

We got ready for bed then,
I nearly dropped dead when
Her false teeth and hair
She laid on the chair,
Side By Side.

The to my amazement,
Her little glass eyes so small,
Her arms and legs beside them,
She laid on the chair by the wall...

Now my baby and me we are parted,
And when we'd only just started,
I sleep on the chair,
('cause there's more of her there),
Side By Side.

One misspelling in my post just now from the Scottish folk singers The Corries:

We "go" married on Friday...should be:

We "got" married on Friday

Seem to remember a parody of Side by Side about public transport, included the following:-
A Girl with an umberella, was poking me, Oh heck
And a great big ugly Fella kept breathing down my neck,
When we'd paid we were all of us carted,
Into the train and it started,
We must travel it seems, packed like sardines,
Side by side.

Nothing changes!

I'm sure this has been another thread.
These false parts songs go back at least to the 17th century, one about Hyde Park Ramble. I wrote an article on the history of them which is on the Mustrad website under the Dungbeetle Articles. Joe, can you put in a blue clicky for us please?

The version I heard (sung by Neal Scarlet AKA Reg Rabbit)
started:

Woke up early one morning,
Fell in love without warning,
So me and old Lou got married at two,
Side by side.
