"It is more than time that people recognised their failings and strove to improve, rather than demanding that standards should fall."

Goodness gracious, Richard.

Gosh Richard I don't think you'll be getting many interested matches on the Folkie Dating Forum.

I am just now realizing that when I did get brave and traverse the online dating scene, I don't think I ever even mentioned folk music, at all!

Guess I figured when I found the right person, they would affectionately tolerate, if not completely share, that part of my life.

Check ; )

For what it's worth, if I were to day any such thing, the tagline would go: -

"Very grumpy short fat old left-wing lawyer with long grey hair and attitude seeks well spoken slim female folkie (age largely immaterial, ethnicity immaterial) to enjoy discomfort (of the camping kind) and alcohol at folk festivals. Ability to play a musical instrument (that excludes banjo) and sing harmony an advantage. Liking for real ale and fast old cars (and the ability to keep such cars out of the scenery) a further advantage."

Frankly, not that bothered about most things, apart from ignorance and wilful stupidity (and the BNP and other right wingers, but that is covered by the foregoing).

The kind of answer required is in the question.

lilly wants to share folkdom with a soulmate.
Opposites do not attract. Research has been reported in the New Scientist which indicates that whatever the differences that appear to outsiders (who arbitrarily choose a subset of each whole person to describe them) - the similarities are more numerous by a large margin. You have to be able to share a lot of similarities to be able to share a lot of time. Dis-similarities can be highly annoying.

The only time I have seen a lot of what appeared to be "odd couples" was in New Zealand out in the Wapwaps. Rural communities in remoter areas have less chance to mix and presumeably have to be less choosy in some aspects. Or remain single. Or move.

I met my husband here in the Mudcat and we will be celebrating our 7th anniversary in October. We think it worked out quite well. Neither of us was particularly looking for anyone. We just became best friends over time and things progressed from there. We both are of the opinion that being friends first is very important.

Bobad... your "carbon 14" is the funniest comment on this thread! FOMALOL! Where have you been all my life?!
My ad: One-eyed, cat-loving, comfortably abundant, 60-ish book collecting female storyteller and folk singer seeks amiable curmudgeon for occasional duets and/or puns.

-well, I'm going to put this thread back on the rails... yes, I think a folkie-speed-dating thing would be kinda fun... and as for 'worried about looking desparate' .. hey, haven't you sung at any venues where they just don't want to know... and how nice it was to find a place that wanted folk music??? it works for the heart too you know.

To Folkieguy
From Computo-match dot com

Our highly clever and expensive computer has searched our database and found you a match
Her details follow:
Seperated woman with 2 young kids(different fathers), loves pets (has pit-bull and pet alligator), likes to listen to music (jazz and 'club'), attends live music events (such as an acid-house all-night rave) and enjoys travelling, (mostly in the back of a paddy waggon returning from a drunken city centre pub crawl still wearing stilletos and a pink stetson singing 'Alice, Alice..who the f%c$.is Alice'). Likes overseas travel ( destination Majorka', Ipizza ) and interested in ethnic culture (a la Albert Square...)

hmmmmmmm. yeah, ....right

A ceilidh does that for the touchy, feely, visual energy, sensual motion, co-operation & phoaaaar! end of the scale. No need to talk if that ain't working.

LOL, dead horse!

Problem with most dating sites that target the kind of men who might be interested in me and vice-versa is that geography would most likely to be a huge barrier to the development of anything beyond an online or telephone romance. Some kinds of musical collaboration can be done that way, but some aspects of relationships suffer when you and your partner are on different continents. (Which, I suppose, is better than being in-continent, but I digress ...)

That's what I thought, Genie. Problem came when Kendall visited the UK. All of a sudden that distance didn't matter - I was going to be with him even if it involved changing continents.

Lilly, I am prepared to bet you have had a few PM's. Without naming names of course why not let us know? :-)

I think this is a great idea - but I always thought that was what festivals were for.

So please do not undermine festivals.

Jacquie,

I agree that distance doesn't matter that much once you've really fallen in love. But it can be a huge impediment to an attraction or infatuation or friendship developing to that level - even if you do get the chance to meet briefly in person.

Plus, many of us are not financially able to do a lot of long-distance travelling.

But you and Kendall are one of the great success stories! : D

Back before I entered geezerhood, I used to find festivals great places for one-night stands and weekend romances -- of course, that WAS back in the '70s and '80s mostly -- but, as with pubs, I haven't personally found party atmospheres and booze to be great tools for initiating real relationships.

Mostly, I find festivals good places for singing and dancing with other people "in the moment" and enjoying the company, often without even exchanging names.   I think a lot of people experience them that way. But I guess if your intent is to connect with people you'll continue seeing after the festival, they can be good places for that. The smaller regional music camps, such as Singtime Frolics (Oregon), RainyCamp (Washington), etc., do seem to be prime soil for budding romances.

Ultimate in speed dating is surely a dance like the Circassian Circle.
..............
Someone up the thread wrote about how "couples we've known with identical interests and tastes can appear to be just a bit creepy" - but one skim through a "What is Folk" thread will show that a shared love of "folk music" by no means implies "identical interests and tastes"!!!

Just trying to conjure up an image of an ideal "folky" playmate.

No, sorry.

We are all different, and unfortunately, any stereotyping would involve hairy legs, vegan diet, ethnic skirt, copy of The Guardian and one of those Afghan coats that smell of dog when they get wet.

I can't see where anything other than broad love of music and a penchant for pubs would be relevant. Being "folky" definitely doesn't float my boat. Not that many people fit in that stereotype, luckily.

I'll get me coat.

BTW, my last post and Amergin's last one were in response to a bizarre, off-topic post by a weird anonymous "GUEST." Now that the MudElves have, wisely, removed that distraction, my post and Amergin's don't make much sense in the flow of the discussion.
