Subject: RE: pride of petrovore From: SINSULL Date: 16 Mar 01 - 08:46 AM If you are looking for lyrics, go to the data base. If you would like a recording - MS.Chuck does it on a Woodchuck's revenge album - buy them both and you'll find it. Ian and Sylvia recorded it in the 60s. If you are confused, join the crowd. It can be away of life around here. |

Subject: RE: pride of petrovore From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 Mar 01 - 10:18 AM Some search tips for "GUEST": Where place names (especially imaginary ones, as in this case) are concerned, spellings often vary. A search for pride of petrovore through the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page would find you one set of lyrics in a previous discussion of the song, but a search for pride of would get you a lot more hits, including the lyric file in the Digital Tradition database. With a little patience, you would also find another set under its more usual (?) title of Eileen Og. In addition, if you were to use the "Digitrad Lyrics Search", looking for pride of petrovore would get you nowhere, but pride of petr* (the * being what is called a "wildcard") would find the DT file. Some practice in the use of search engines is all you need, and it's really worth making the effort. Further useful information may be found in the FAQ thread at the top of the Thread list. Malcolm |

Subject: RE: pride of petrovore From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C Date: 20 Mar 01 - 08:58 AM I can still hear Richard Dyer-Bennet's version of this song echoing in my head. I believe the Smithsonian is re-releasing his superb recordings as CD's. For those of you who have never listened to this urban troubadour, I urge you to give himt a listen. You may be startled by his high tenor voice but we all have a lot to learn from his impeccable renditions of traditional songs. |

Subject: RE: pride of petrovore From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 20 Mar 01 - 09:15 PM "It's always in the DT" is a pretty safe rule. I suppose it didn't turn up when I looked because it's got Eileen Orr instead of Oge, and because it's got McGraw where Percy French had him as McGrath. And Petrovar instead of Petravore.
Thanks for the links Malcolm - one of them (the second in the Forum - Pride of Petrovar) ended with this intriguing snippet:
found this site while trying to find lyrics to "eilleen og."i'm not sure if this is true and would welcome any input. my aunt from co. cavan told me yrs. ago that the pedravor in percy french's song referred to my gr. grandfather, peter mcgovern, also known as pedravor or "peter of the road." he was from glangevlin i think, so i'm wondering if this is true and did anyone else ever hear this? he lived about 1860's i think. maryann
But noone seems to have followed it up, and tghere's no othr posts by maryann the handkle she used for that one anyway. I'd always taken "Petravore" to be a place name, and wondered where it might be - but maybe it is a person all along, the name of the poor lad singing who's had his heart broken.
Has anyone got any ideas about this? |

Subject: RE: pride of petrovore From: GUEST,esmond Date: 21 Mar 01 - 05:17 PM Brendan O'Dowda's version was an integral (and good) part of my childhood. He did a whole album of Percy French songs in the sixties some time including the wonderful 'Are you right there Michael, are you right?'. I saw him singing Eileen Oge on St Patricks Night in the Free Trade Hall, Manchester circa 1967. Thanks for the memory. |

Subject: RE: pride of petrovore From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Mar 01 - 04:11 PM Ah but you couldn't beat The Count's version. (Count John McCormack that is).
Any further thoughts on whether Petravore is a place or a person? |
